The home side is unbeaten in 15 matches and ranked No 1 in South Africa. Paul Roos, meanwhile, are reigning Sanix World Youth champions and ranked second in SA, having lost just one close game against Paarl Gim this campaign. Their 150 year birthday celebrations also help set the stage for an epic encounter between two of the greatest rugby schools in the world. These two schools have a sporting history that dates back over 100 years and have always been great rivals on the sports fields and great friends off it. Many Old Boys from this pair have gone on to represent Western Province and South Africa together. The first recorded time ex-members of the two schools played together for SA was in 1910 when the Springboks faced Great Britain in a three-Test series. Dirkie de Villiers and Cocky Hahn became Boishaai’s first Springboks, while Gideon Roos (brother of Paul Roos), Dick and Lammetjie Luyt and Koot Reynecke were the PRG representatives. Two other famous Springboks, Jannie Engelbrecht (PRG) and Mannetjies Roux (Boishaai) both made their debuts for South Africa in 1960. The first Test they played together was against Wales in SA’s 3-0 win at Cardiff Arms Park. The pair lined up together in 16 Tests up to 1969. Mannetjies Roux and Jannie Engelbrecht as depicted in magazines in the 1960s Paul Roos and Boishaai were the two Cape schools invited to the first St John's Festival and have been regular attendees of the event down the years. In 1999 the Paarl team was so depleted by injuries that they were one player short for the last game against Kearsney. Up stepped George Hauptfleisch from Paul Roos to pull on a Boishaai jersey to help them out. He even scored a try in Neil Fullard’s No 3 jersey, only for the shirt's original owner to be credited with it. Boishaai returned the favour when they provided substitutes for the Paul Roos bench in case of injury. Rivalries between the schools even stretch across families as the famous Du Plessis rugby family can attest. Springbok brothers Michael and Carel both had sons in the respective schools. The 2014 SA Under-20s flyhalf Jean Luc Du Plessis, son of Carel, was the Boishaai pivot in his matric year in 2012. In 2013, meanwhile, Michael’s son Daniel was the Paul Roos centre. Daniel is currently at the Junior Rugby World Cup in Italy emulating his cousin and becoming the fifth member of his family to represent South Africa on a rugby field. The 1984 Springboks vs England with Carel du Plessis and Hempies du Toit. The trend for Old Boys to play together continues to this day. In 2012 Paul Roos loosehead Steven Kitshoff and Boishaai tighthead Max van Dyk anchored the scrum for the Junior World Cup winning SA U-20s team, two years after being on opposing school sides. Steven Kitshoff and Max van Dyk: SA U-20s 2012 Kitshoff then teamed up with 2009 Boishaai captain and Springbok tighthead Frans Malherbe at Western Province Stormers, emerging as the most devastating front row combination in the country. Both these stars are touted as possible Rugby World Cup starters in England this year. So far they have not disappointed in losing just once, narrowly, against local rivals Paarl Gim. They also returned triumphant from Japan after winning the Sanix Youth World Rugby Championship after six matches on a tight schedule. Their season has thus far gone to plan with good wins over Affies, Jeppe, Monument and Grey High PE. The highly competitive Western Cape Schools league is a tough environment to stay unbeaten in. One slip came against Paarl Gim, but if they can survive matches against Paarl Boys, Boland Landbou and bogey team Bishops, they can be rated as one of the greatest Paul Roos sides ever. To end the season off, they face old foes Grey College to wrap up a century and a half of action. The Maroon Machine have three WP Craven Week representatives this year in Joshua Vermeulen, Nico Leonard and Damien Willemse. Reserve prop Muammir Salie, lock Lazlo Pscorn and captain Joa Swart all made the WP Academy team. Paarl Boys' High 2015 Season The 2015 Boishaai team started under the radar. Head coach Sean Erasmus and assistant Elmo Wolfaardt are quietly confident that their 2015 crop is a special bunch. At the Easter festivals, they dispatched Noordvaal giants Monnas and Garsfontein within two days of each other in an efficient and effective manner. Experienced lock Ruben de Villiers, a veteran of the 2014 campaign, plays a vital role in keeping the solid tight five together. With fellow lock, Salmaan Moerat, they make a formidable pair at 1.99m Talisman Ellister Becker collected a serious head injury against Tygerberg a fortnight ago and will miss the rest of the campaign. The rest of the team has remained stable with coach Erasmus opting for consistency throughout 2015. Paarl Boys has seven WP representatives at Craven Week this year. Tyreeq February, Manual Rass, Khanye Ncusane, Ruben de Villiers, Salmaan Moerat, Leo Kruger and Wikus Groenewald will all be at Markotter fields in July in the famous white and blue hooped jerseys. Scrumhalf Bradley Thain and reserve flanker Charl Serdyn were both picked for the WP Academy team.
