IN giving ou t this revelation to the world it 1s on ly with the deepest sanctity a n d rever I ence , and might add , a reluctance m the fear that this beautifu l and wonderful experience u of may , thro gh necessity , be soiled by public skepticism ! but in the belief that in the world today there are millions eagerly I awaiting the message , give it now with a ul heart f l of hope and love . CHAPTER I

PRE SENT DA Y INTERE ST IN PSY CHIC PHENOMENA N I a recent magazine , Sir caps his splendid article on Spiritism

a n with interrogation , Is Sir Oliver Lodge ” ? ffir Right It is my great privilege to a m , while Sir Con an Doyle begs the question in f spite o the proof of his own conviction .

Then certain philosophers of the

a n d of en Epicureans , the Stoics ,

countered him . And some said , What will this babbler sa y ? other

some , He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods . ! And they took him an d brought n him u to Areopagus , saying , May

we know what this new doctrine , is ? whereof thou speakest ,

1 3 For thou bringest certain strange thin gs to ou r ears : we would know

therefore what these things mean . ! Then Paul stood in the midst o f

’ a n d Mars hill , said , Ye men of Athens , I perceive that in all things ye are too

superstitious .

For as I passed by , and beheld

u yo r devotions , I found an altar with

n n To the Un kn own this i scriptio ,

o G d . Whom therefore ye ignorantly

worship , him I declare u nto you . !Acts 1 7 : 1 8 - 1 9- 2o -2 2

Century after centu ry has passed since Pau l uttered these words and yet today as then the same inscription is foun d over the many altars o f To the n kn own od church and creed U G .

Like a voice crying in the wilderness , Truth ,

o f ou r the Gospel Lord Jesus Christ , has been but sounding brass a n d tink ling cymba so lightly has it penetrated into the heart and f f soul o the mortal o this earth plane . When I can stand today and sa y openly and fearlessly that I speak directly to those who o r have passed over to the Life Eternal , what the world calls Death , the worldly wise , the or skeptical , the ignorant , superciliously smile perchance may pity . Nevertheless it is a fact that it is as n atural for me now to speak to

1 4 sa a s those on the other side , as we y , it is to

speak to those in the flesh . The voices are the as distinct , oftentimes more distinct , than

v oices of some human beings . In n o article on Spiritism in recen t cu rrent literatu re has the Voice Medi u m been m en tion ed and yet no means of commu n i ca tion with the Spirit world is as positive or of such

absolute proof . Sir Oliver Lodge in the August number of the Bookm a n describes the different modus Operandi of but di does not mention the voice me um , the one complete commun i cation with the Spirit world ! so as but this is not strange , for far is known there ar e few if any voice medi um s in England and not many on the entire earth plane . Jutis

Va iri 1 8th , an occult brother of India in the

n Ce tury , told me recently from the Spirit di world , in speaking of the voice me um , that there are today and always have been voice mediums among the of India , but that the communication to man in India from the Spirit world is more generally the Voice of God within man , an impression as it were , or conscience thought . There is no lon ger any doubt in the a u th en ticity of communication between the Spirit world and the earth plane ! it is an established di fact beyond spute , even though the intel fi lectual , scienti c and ecclesiastical world may

1 5 n o t yet b e ready to accept it . But the world today is blessed with great min ds too broad to

n a n d s eer , too open to refuse to listen when such men as Sir Oliver Lodge , Sir Arthur Conan u Doyle , Ma rice Maeterlinck , not only listen but express their views and impressions , the ! ” world is beginning to wonder . ! Sir Oliver Lodge , as Maurice Maeterlinck ! of u Bookm a n i n speaks him in the Aug st , s o e of o f ou r the most notable scientists time . on e He has , in a word , of the best balanced brains that on e coul d hope to meet ! and he is convinced that the dead do not die but are ” able to communicate with us . The public very generally is conversan t with ’ Sir Oliver Lodge s book , Raymond , or Life and Death . I doubt if in recent years a n y one book has absorbed the readin g public as ul has this volume . In these times Of dreadf stress when the flower of man hood has b e en so

on e n ruthlessly cut down , for to catch eve a ! ” glimpse of the beyon d has been life to man y an aching heart that has suffered in this world wide con flict . This is perhaps the first time that on e has openly given out the life that is beyon d the

n of in veil and the livi g words Raymond , who

n n in his fra k boyish ess , tells even the m utest

f n di details o his Spiritual surrou ngs , is like a cu p of cold water to parched lips . But Ray

1 6 mond w as a new Spirit in the Spirit world when the com m u nications to his father were ! as given related in Raymond , since which time he has had great spiritual growth and develop ment and his knowledge and understanding of the Life Eternal is much fuller and plainer to

him now . He longs to speak again through — of his father, to the world to tell the won derful and beautiful existence Of those who have — passed over from the battle fields to assure

n the weepi g fathers and mothers , wives and

r1ev m for children , who are g g their own in this w a r th a t terrible , if they could but know the j oy and happiness of their loved ones in the

Spirit world , no more tears would be Shed ! rather songs of than k sgiving be su ng and prayers of gratitude be said . I have h ad several splendid talks with Ray

n mo d , and the conversation is the same as

- I would have with any bright , pure minded , n oble young man in the flesh . Raymond n aturally is very much interested in the war a n d war conditions , and in a conversation with him a few days ago he Spoke of ou r ow n Ameri or can boys getting ready to go the front , of ! those who are already there , and said , Mrs .

Durand , I love to look at them , they are such ” fin e of a lot fellows . I have not as yet written Sir Oliver Lodge in regard to these talks with Raymond ,

1? although I had meant to do so , but Raymond ! laughingly said the other day , Father gets

thousands of letters about his book , so your

letter might never reach his eye ! better still , write an article for a magazine and send him ” the magazine ! he will get that . The same thought w as given me by one of ’ America s richest young men , who passed over the border a Short time ago and who left a

ul n beautif young widow . Whe I asked him if of ou r I Should write her conversations , he ! quickly replied , Goodness , no , Mrs . Durand , ’ Sh e woul d think you crazy ! But can t you write an article for a magazine and send her that first ? The interest displayed in ’ and ‘ Raymond ’ shows that people are beginning to think and it is the psychological e moment , I beli ve , for you to tell the world ” what you are experiencin g . This young man was n o doubt envied by half the world for his great wealth inherited of from his grandfather , yet it was no avail when he seemed needlessly taken so early f dl w as of in li e , and his worl y possession n fin e aught , but the , beautiful Spirit that comes to me and reveals himself as a true son o f God is the greatest wealth he could possess . - of in Noble , clear minded , sweet , full love , deed a rare person ality that the earth plane missed . God grant that he may from the

1 8 most beautiful to look upon and wonderfully developed spiritually . For years she had hoped to fin d one on the earth plane whom sh e ul u se u u co d as a medi m , and thro gh an u f r instrument partic larly adapted o her u se .

This She fou nd in Mrs . Cu rran and the ou iji

board . As for the direct voice , she will have of S none it , when I asked if he would speak to Own of me , preferring her way communication i exclusively through Mrs . Cu rran and the ou ji

board , and my brother in the Spirit world ! 0 u laughingly remarked , N use to rge her to

speak to you . Patience Worth has a mind and a will of her own and we had better let it

alone . From this particul ar commu nication the re

su lts are charming and interesting . The only m i sfortune is in the universal use of the ou iji board by the p u b h c which the doings of

m . Patience Worth has Sp ired Mr . Stead in O speaking f it to me from the Spirit world ,

recently said , It is most unfortunate , for the ou iji board is so unreliable in the hands of the ” public , it proves a dangerous instrument . In ’ n own su b con other words , o e s conscious or scious thought may be the ! Spirit ” the indi

vidual thinks is Speaking .

Sarco n om of . g y , Manual Psychometry , etc V ictor Hugo , the great French writer , was a f Spiritist . ! ueen Victoria o England for many years held daily conversations with her Spirit u husband , through John Brown , a medi m , and u sho ld I delve deeper into past history , many more personalities that rose above the average fi in scienti c and literary attainment , may be included as o u t and ou t believers in Spirit communication .

26 in not being more conversant with French f She replied , No , it is not necessary , or Eng lish will in time be the universal language . The same heroic personality is still manifest , as sh e exu ltingly tells me of her brave French ” soldier boys and how She is with them , con sta n tly urging them forward and onward to a triu mphant victory . The tender solicitude and interest displayed in my own little personal

f . af airs by Mr Lincoln , Joan of Arc , Count

Tolstoi and others , personalities I have known ul only through history , is delightf and tou ches me deeply . u Mr . Lincoln is naturally keyed p to a high pitch over the position we have taken in this world war . And for me to have the privilege of discussing the war and ou r own political affairs with ou r beloved martyred President is hard for me to realiz e and harder still for the public to believe . ’ In talking over ou r cou ntry s part in this great war early last Spring , Mr . Lincoln voiced the importance of the President ’ s appointing w as a War Board , when war actually declared , ul n for he felt there sho d be a ce tral Board , a centralization of all the heads of the war work . The cabinet has quite enough to do with the usual routine of the nation in peace times , and to place u pon it the entire bu rden of the war woul d not be economic wisdom . However ,

28 the members of the cabinet Shou ld be inclu ded 1n this Board with the President as an advisory

- head or ex officio member . Men shou ld be e chosen best suited for these positions , irr s ectiv e ffi m an b e p of party a liation , and each peculiarly fitted for the branch of servi ce of

which he is to be the head . One man on Food e ou r and the necessities of lif for soldiers , our ou r u selves and , another for coal and f el ! Allies k of all inds , still another for equipment and munitions . One and preferably an experienced of railroad man , to take charge all transporta tion and Shipping . The ablest lawyer to be found on National and International Law Should be a member of this Board to decide any legal qu estion that might arise between the h Allies and ourselves . Anot er , active in our u r Secret Service , to handle the Aliens within o

di u . midst , industrial st rbances and strikes A special committee Shou ld be appointed to take charge of all problems directly involving on e labor , represented by man as a member of War the Board . This Board to meet at stated u intervals and to be a clearing ho se , as it f were , in this great business o war which has ! been placed upon us for the freedom of the — ” a n d world for justice for peace . I then asked Mr . Lincoln if it wou ld not be possible for him and the Spirit world to so impress or inspire our administration that it wou ld bring

29 u u abo t just s ch a Board , to which he replied , ! ” Wait and see .

Mr . Lincoln has not failed to voice his anger over the activities of some of our wealthy and

n fl i uential citizens , who , while making a great O parade f their patriotism , were secretly in collusion with the enemy in getting foodstu fls ! into Germany . They may sa y they are n ot

Shipping food to Germany , perhaps they are not , but they know that it nevertheless gets ” ! m there , and again , Our Govern ent will have

a n to put embargo on all food , for too much Of ” it is going straight to Germany . He was re liev ed and pleased when Mr . Wilson di d take that drastic step in placing an embargo o n food exportation .

In regard to the submarines , Mr . Lincoln regretted that ou r country did not start the buildi ng of submarine destroyers a year or two ago , but he is more than delighted over the rapid progr ess now being made in building the

fi . destroyers . The rst week in September Mr Lincoln told me of a won derful shell ou r navy

n had invented and was using on the submari es , Six submarines already destroyed by them fi Mrs . that Shell , Durand , is going to nish the ” n submari es .

n Mr . Li coln has the greatest faith , however , in ou r aeroplane fleet a n d feels it will play a most important part in hasten in g the end of

30 in the war . The new aeroplane engine has

terested him greatly . One day he informed m - me triu phantly , We have twenty two hun dred aeroplanes all finished and ready for the ” n ew n n i w as fi e gine , and when the e g ne nally l w as demonstrated so successfully Mr . Linco n very happy and full of enthusiasm .

It seemed to me last spring that Mr . Lin coln was a little un easy over ou r lack of war

n fi in preparation , but the mag i cent manner which ou r Government placed one hundred thousand men on Fren ch soil with such dis patch and secrecy ! I was told how many were on n the ocean , how many had la ded , how many ar about to st t , where they had sailed from and where they were , and what they were doing . I doubt if another person in the world outside of the official army and navy circles kn ows as much as I do of ou r military a n d naval m a n eu

n vers ! however , although a woma , I can keep a secret , particularly when Abraham Lincoln n ot n dr tells me to tell the sple did aft bill , a n d liquor bill , other legislative steps , together with the rapidity Of m ilitary and naval train in of ou r fi a n d l g men , and the unsel sh se f sacrificing attitude of thousan ds o f men and e of women from very class society , the coming ! forward of so many prominent business men to give their executive ability , experience and s time to this great cause , have all impre sed

3 1 Mr . Lincoln deeply . He knows and loves every soldier and every sailor , every man and every woman and every child who has re ’ sp on ded to the Nation s call in this great n fl world co ict , and he manifests the keenest interest in them all and in the great part his — own beloved country is taking for never in history , he has said , was a more righteous war ! Of waged , A war not nation against nation , A u but Justice , Honor and Godliness against tocra c y , Greed and Brutality , in their most ” hideous and viperous forms . After the war what ? A brotherly love and spirituality the world has never before known O ou r is the hope f martyred President , God bless him !

And now about Russia . As a you ng girl the two men who stood ou t the strongest in all the world for me were of En gland and

Count Tolstoi of Russia . Never was I tired of reading of Count Tolstoi a n d picturing him in his little garden under the Shade of his

n n favorite tree , po deri g, pondering over life a n problems d their solution . For God to make it possible for me to Sit in the quiet of my own little room and to hear that great of man tell me Russia , stirs me to such a depth that for hours after I can think o f nothing else . Step by step for several months has Cou nt Tolstoi led me with him in Russia

32 ’ and with Russia s struggle , but always , always ! sa DO the last thing he would y , not worry ,

Mrs . Durand , Russia will win .

K n Ah , how little does ere sky and those who are givin g their very life blood for their b e ow n loved country know that Tolstoi , their n en cou ra Tolstoi is with them every mome t , g

in n n . g them , leadi g them , guardi g them It so happened that the da y the Czar was exiled that I had the great privilege of a talk

d . n . sa with Cou t Tolstoi I am very , Mrs

d . Duran , I am very sad today I do not wish to see the Czar and his family exiled to Si n ot beria . The Czar did mean wrong , he has a good heart , but is weak . I wish it were other ” wise a n d that they would not be sent . At the time that the Russian soldiers were fleeing and becomin g traitors to the great Cause

Of Russia , and Germany seemed to be getting

in SO the upper hand Russia , upon my great licitude and alarm over the Situation , Count !

0 . Tolstoi replied , N fear , Mrs Durand , even if for the time being Germany does gain this territory , She cannot hold it . My soldiers weakening h as only delayed the end of the war ” but has not changed the ultimate resu lt . — Tolstoi I fin d is the same Tolstoi interesting ’ and interested in all Of life s problems and hu ’ man ity s struggles . When I asked what I might

of u : say him in my writings , he q ickly replied

33 Say to the world that I am the same , the b u t same Tolstoi they knew before , with a

A S u larger vision and a greater knowledge . p o n ou t so earth I gave my prophecy , now do I prophesy that this great conflict is but the of necessary weapon to clear the earth Greed ,

. of Hate , and Autocracy To the children the earth plane let me sa y it will be to you a beau u tiful and wonderf l blessing , for from ou t the smoke and noise of battle a new generation e shall b born , guided from above , in which a great Spiritual awakening will bring righteou s ”

ou . ness , wisdom and love to y all Since writing the above the German inva

. sion into Italy has taken place Count Tolstoi , although not disparaging the attack , did not think it as serious as reported , for he believed the Germans were advan cin g only to their own destruction and would be hemm ed in and perish

- through mountain storm and snow . However , he lays great stress upon the importance of aid to Russia from the United States . ! m m u n i We do not need your soldiers , a tion or food but we do need a propaganda to educate , of instruct and enlighten the peoples Russia , to mould them together into on e great nation . of on e The Russian peasant whom I was , is the real Russian after all and forms the greater part Of the Russian nation . CLERGY FROM EVERY CH URCH A ND CREED A CKNOW LEDGE SP IRITISM A S A FACT In glancing through the records compiled by Mr . R . A . Dague , to whom I wish to acknowledge my indebtedn ess for the many names I have used of the big men of life who

The Rev . H . W . Thomas , D . great Methodi st who for nearly a quarter of a cen tury preached every Sunday to thousan ds o f people in on e of the famous theaters of Chi ! cago . Dr . Thomas said : I am a Spiritual ist . I wou ld have to give up the Bible if I de nied the ministry of Spirits . Thirty years ago I was so fortunate as to discover that Spiritualism meant a continuity of life . I found that I was in sympathy with its teach ” ings . I am a Spiritualist .

The Rev . R . Heber Newton !Episcopalian! preached a sermon which was published in

New York World of 1 1 1 8 the April , 9 7 , in which he said : Spiritualism is a truth which is

37 embodi ed in the records of the very beginning

of ou r Christian religion .

. f . D . o Rev Lyman Abbott , D , Henry Ward ’ C : Beecher s old hurch !Congregationalist! , said I do not believe that those who have died

n have go e far away from us . I love to thin k my mother follows me with her eyes as

She did when I was a boy . I believe that the

n in d fin a l stra ge , subtle , inexplicable and e b e influence that sometimes comes into my life ” is from her .

Y . : Henry Ward Beecher , Brooklyn , N . , said There have been times in which I declare to you heaven was more real than earth ! in which my childr en that were gone spoke more plainly to me than my children that were with f me . These glimpses o the future state are a great comfort and consolation to all those who are looking for the development Of perfect

manhood . It is generally admitted from the very beginning Of things that this world has fl been Open to the in uence of spirits . That false notions have arisen during all ages con cerning Spiritualism does not prove its fallacy ” by a n y means .

Rev . Dr . Joseph A . Milburn !Presbyterian! ! said : They are formin g a sect called Spirit

Spiritualism .

. df Rau ert o f J Go rey p London , who was especially delegated by Pope Pius X . to lecture to Catholic audien ces in America on Spirit u a lism a n d : its dangers , said It is no longer possible to put the phenomena aside . A few years ago it was the policy of the church to avoid the dangers of Spiritism by saying noth fi ing about it , but today the scienti c men all over the world have recognized Spiritism as a fi de nite and real power , and to shelve it is a dangerous policy ! consequently the Pope has asked me to tell Catholics just the attitude to

of o f Archdeacon Colley England , rector : Stockton , says Spiritualism comes as a god send to millions who are in capable of believing

C S vs . SP H G HRISTIAN CIENCE IRIT EALIN , MANY TESTIMONIALS IN person ally laying bare my own conversion ri to Spi tism , I have this to say . Up to eight months ago the word Spiri tism or Spiri tual ism was to me an unknown quantity , suggest

C . e ing fakes and harlatans Psychical Res arch , al however , commanded my respect , though with the exception of a superficial in terest many years ago in Occult Science , Esoteric

a n d Magic Psychic Phenomena , I was wholly

n u prepared for this great revelation . This came from the passing over of a much beloved sister .

I had heard of the book Raymond , by Sir

o or Oliver L dge , only a day two before my ’ Sister s death , but did not secure a copy until

fi n several days later , and the rst intimatio I had that I myself was psychi c came through

n r in automatic writi g f om my Sister . In an direct and wandering way I was led later to a medium . I went wholly unknown to the medium and no on e knew of my intention of

4 4 going . The address of the mediu m was given me over a public telephone and my name was

not mentioned . I received a most accurate and startling reading and I returned to my a n home full Of excitement d happiness . A fortnight later a second visit was made with absolute p roof Of the genuineness of the com m u n ica tion and my own conviction of its

authenticity . r The day following I left for Califo nia , and of learning a voice medium , arrived at her home wholly unexpected , a few hours after reaching California from the East and only an hour after hearing of her . I did not know what a voice medium meant nor th e nature of the sitting ” but when in the very presence ! ” of the beyond my beloved sister spoke to 1n r me her own sweet voice , the inexp essible joy of knowing that the veil had been torn aside — the abyss bridged — the last enemy — of all destroyed was very great . Since that day I have had quick and mar

lou s v e development and have been led tenderly , lovin gly step by step through gu idance from the Spirit world . Having been a Christian Scientist since 1 899 and having received the very best class in

. K struction through the late Edward A imball , I can perhaps appreciate more fully than the average person the beauty and mar v el of spirit

4 5 healing by the physicians in the Spiri t world .

. di h Mrs Eddy was herself a me um , and had s e ui ul permitted her G des to lead her , wo d have developed into a remarkable instrument for

r Spi it communication , but the forces left her for a reason and the book ! Science and Health ” was written , with catches of the Divine , mostly through mortal mind and became a commercial proposition with her . To deny the good of Christian Science is not n l for ul o y foolish but wrong , wonderf results have been Obtained through its agency and the getting away from the old dogma and narrow creed of the orthodox church is a great step forward . Christian Science is a beautifu l and sweet religion and has healed many a sorrow in g heart but it is not all Truth and to deny the existence of matter or the physical body is to fl deny God , for our life here in the esh is a part — of the Life Eternal . It is all the same the — on e beautiful life and thi s body created by God ul God , given us by , sho d be honored , cared for and acknowledged . To abuse , to on e ignore , to deny our physical body might as well deny life itself . And for Mrs . Eddy to have taught her students to wage war , as it

on ri of were , Spi tism , is nothing short sacrilege a n d I am convinced that sh e herself knew bet ter even when in the act of decrying it . It own was because Mrs . Eddy listened to her

4 6 voice and not the voice of God that she was estranged from her Guides who wou ld have th e sh e was taught her Truth , and , therefore , m denied fur ther com unication . In another volum e I hope to enter more

' th e riv i fully into this subject , and may have p n n lege of Mrs . Eddy herself explai i g to me where Chr istian Science is the truth and where do kn ow it is not . But I that all healing is from above and where demonstrations of heal ing are made by a Christian Science Pra cti

tion er n , it is not because the Practitio er in den ying matter and error receives resul ts

n o from that de ial , but it is because the Pra tition er is so near his or her Guides that the earnestness of prayer and pu rpose brings the aid asked for .

k . I tal to Dr Nicholas Senn , Dr . John B .

Ba l . il . n r v di Murphy , Dr He y B , as rea ly a s fl and easily, as if they were in the esh

ffi n seated in their o ce chair , and ma y cases medi cinal a n d surgical have been explained to me . I can attest to a most remarkable

di . agnosis by Dr Senn relative to myself . Having for twenty years been a su fferer from acute facial neuralgia , I went to a well-known Chicago Hospital a year ago for a careful examination to ascertain the cause of the pain . A promin ent n ose and throat specialist sa w nothing wrong in my

4 7 of nose or throat , and in fact none the special ists af an d , ter making every test examination , found the cause . However , a dental surgeon in examining an X-ray plate of my teeth a n n ou n ced that four teeth should be extracted , that they in all probability caused my suffer f . o ing A second dental surgeon , but another school , agreed also that four teeth should come out but only on e was included in the , fi a n first four . I nally consented d fou r per fectly strong hard teeth were cracked with a ham m er a n d the pieces delicately or in deli catel ou t W a n y picked , and ith only a local

f n rv ae sthetic . The result was a week o e ous exhaustion and intense suffering at the hos pital and fiv e months of severe neuralgic head ! so ache , that my last state was worse than o f the first . In speaking this circumstance

Dr . Senn indignantly denounced such a brutal

n n treatment and more . indig a tly denied the of for necessity extracting the teeth , such infection as was seen in the roots or ducts of the teeth could be easily reached and treated and the pus pockets cleansed . And I have since learned that mu ch of my severe illn ess after the operation , which I presumed came

in the w as in from the infection teeth , reality due to the harmful effect of the drug a n d to an infected instrument used in the hypo dermic at the time o f the extraction of the

4 8 e r teeth . For at a lat r date , in emoving a u ct in nerve , the dentist again sed an infe ed strumen t and too powerfu l an m sth etic which brought abou t exactly the same serio us

resul ts I had before experienced . A n d better X- m i w as than any Ray exa nation , I told the rea l cause of my neu ralgia : !

s u n i . with Dr . Senn s diagnosi written p o t I

did not mention anything , not even my severe am headaches , only asked for an ex ination of

my nose and throat . After the examination — ! Dr . turned to me and said , Why , my

n dear woman , your left nostril is e tirely closed ” and always has been . With that he gave

me the exact diagnosis of Dr . Senn . I handed him the Slip of paper from the table to which extra or he exclaimed , By George , this is ” din a ry ! It beats anything I ever heard of ! The resu lt was a removal of a bone the Size of fi a green bean seed , and for the rst time in my

life I breathed freely , and since that day have

not had on e trace of neuralgic pain . Among the many cases I know of bearing testimony of Spirit healing is that of a young woman who throu gh stoppage in the rectum was obliged to undergo the operation o f sh e colotomy . With many operations had been confined in her bed for years and her

n of case considered incurable . Heari g Spirit

healing through a medium , she asked that the Spirit doctors tell her the trouble and if her

50 that of a young man who caught a severe cold that went to his lungs . He looked as thou gh he were dying , and every one , inclu ding his physician , expected him to die . He was taken to u S the Co nty Hospital , but hearing of pirit if healing through a medium , he asked she might be with him at the hospital du ring the m i exa nation by the hospital surgeons . The medi um told the physicians that the young man had an abscess on his lung and that they ul Sho d operate to relieve the pus , but they only smilingly informed her She was mistaken .

However , when the young man was about to die , as a last resort an operation was performed cu of and over a p pus removed , and today he l is as we l and vigorous as ever . I coul d go on thr ough many pages relating just such incidents as these for the blind are see l made to , the lame to wa k , and every known or malady , whether medicinal surgical , healed i ‘ through gu dance and care . But that does not mean a denial of the disease or the letting of as alone the claim , the Christian Scientists di call it , for the correct agnosis is given by the Spirit world and one is directed to the proper s urgeon or physician for treatment or in some cases simple remedies , change of diet and liv or ing is advised . Again steam baths , electric medicinal , are advocated . Dr . Nicholas Senn told me on e day that abou t ninety per cent of

52 n di n e n a u r the prese t day ag oses , ve mong o s most reputable physicians and urgeons , is di really gu ess work ! and accor ng to Dr . John a . r u O B Mu phy , in s rgery it is all a m tter f who ! ” ! h . W is the most fearless butcher y, I was

Mr . just as bad as the rest of them s Du rand . I only achieved my great reputation as a su r geon , because I happened to be a little bigger i butcher , somet mes I hit it right , some ’ ” times I didn t . This is not written dispar a in l of or s f r g g y the physician urgeon , o often times they can not really know the trouble until an operation is performed . I recall Dr . ’ Mur phy s explaining this to me in the case of n gall stones a d appendicitis . A surgeon may on e operate for , when it is the other , for an

X - Ray does not always locate the gall stone , and not seeing a stone the appendix is decided upon as the gu ilty destroyer whereas it may be wholly innocent . The symptoms are very — Similar , Dr . Murphy says vomiting in both cases . However , there will always run a tem p era tu re with an infected appendix and not so if frequent or at all , I remember him correctly , with a gall stone . A physician or surgeon shou ld go to a good voice or trance medium , but only to one of high Spirituality , reliable and morally above — o reproach and not be ashamed to g , talk to the physicians in the Spirit world , many

53 of whom are old friends , get the proper di agnosis and advice before operating , or treat the case as may be and follow ou t the in stru ction s given by the Spirit world in the matter of proper diet and proper living for — the human race mu ch suffering and disease would thus be prevented . And in communi cating with those who have passed over , but who are mu ch the same as when in the — — flesh retaining their own individu ality the fear of disease and the sting of death woul d be lifted from trembling and suffering hu man u of ity . Man then co ld live in peace mind , seeking only the greater knowledge for his

Spiritual growth and betterment .

SE PARATING THE TARES FROM THE WHEAT A LL GENIU S 1 s B U T INSP IRATION FROM THE SP IRIT WORLD IN giving ou t this experience and kn owledge of Spirit com m unication I do not stan d for all who may call themselves medium s or even

n or Spiritualists , do I represent any Spirit li ’ u a sts . Leagu e or Church As in all things ,

Prove all things , hold fast to that which is ” rO h good , for there are false as well as true p p sa d ets , and indeed , there is the unworthy ‘ medium who tra fiics in her God-given gift seeking the material substance it brin gs rather than the Spiritual unfoldment o f those who

u n come to her . And sadder still , is the scrupu lous mediu m surrounded by invisible — entities of the evil forces who prey upon a u own victim as a v lture , gratifying their vicious desires in the cloak of beings from above — the passing over from the flesh to the Spirit condition does not at once make perfect . Life is progression . Like attracts b like , and a medium unless a solutely pure , good , honest , will attract about her those

55 from the Spirit world that are the same and these evil Spirits oft-times will personate good Spirits and even the loved ones o f those u who come for comm nication , in order to gain their own selfish aims or the demands

Of their medium . But the time is coming , I know , when Spiritism , respected and revered Will be placed where it should have been placed for the past 20 0 0 years above all reproach

the T u th - and criticism . It is r the Great — SO Master brought that is misunderstood , so misapplied in the many sects and creeds . The Constitu tion of the United States gives of individual religious freedom , and many the States are now making laws for the protection of legitimate Spiritism and the expulsion Of the

ak . ffi f er and charlatan The great di culty , however , in sifting the fraudulent from the

or n true , lies in the public laymen not bei g u able to j dge properly , and , as has been the fin e case , a medium may be branded by the police or press as an irn p oster whereas in re ality sh e is a beautiful handm aiden of God giving solace to the afflicted and distressed .

In time , I am convinced , a greater under standin g and interest will bring about a de sired reform in the setting forth of this reli

On e proper surrou di gs asks right here , a n d if Spiritism is knowledge , the only true n ot religion , why then has it been experienced a n d practiced more generally these past 20 0 0 ? B years I answer with another question . e cause a child in the first grade at school can not grasp Euclid , Should Euclid , who collected a n d systematized all the fundamental princi ples Of pure mathematics which had been de

Eu doxa s livered down by Thales , Pythagoras , and other mathematicians before him , be de cla red false ? The world for the past 20 0 0 years has never fi gone beyond the rst grade , but God grant that this awful fire the world is now passing through may be the means of raising it to a

n higher plane of knowledge and u derstanding .

Ou r own noted and brilliant personalities on — the earth plane inventors , writers , poets , u — musicians , sc lptors , painters are in reality but psychi cs whose achievements come because they are mediums and can retain impressions given them by the Spirit world . Some know this , others do not .

Mr . Lincoln is very fond of the Augustus St .

on n word e evening last spring that Mr . Li coln and Judge Sheperd wished me to go at once to a certain professional voice medi um in Chicago I hastily caught an early evening train to

Mr . Lincoln greeted me with was , Well , Mrs . u fin e Durand , my stat e looked pretty tonight , ’ ” didn t it ?

’ This marvelou s knowing even of one s thoughts by the Spirit world , as applied to seemingly trivial affairs unnoticed by the h u a t n man being , is times startli g , nevertheless

ul n very beautif , showi g the interest displayed in ou r behalf . In deference to Mr . Lincoln why n ot settle the controversy To be or n ot

She may now hon or him with his wish and judg ment . It is inspiration from the Spirit world which made possible the telephone , wireless , aero

The human medium will be replaced by a sensitive wave instru ment on the principle of of the wireless telephone . One speaks a great genius on earth ! he is great Only in di being a great psychic or me um , and there an by instrument the Spirit world can use . And to again quote Ralph Waldo Emerson from the Spirit world : ! I went through my earthly existence with u o t realizing the inspiration I got . I thought u I was fort nate in being able to do my work , on but as I go I see I was inspired . Even my condi tion was an inspiration and it seemed to make it easy . I always sought the Spiritual part of life and my con ditions came easily and

I was very happy . I hope the world will study my books with this view and feel the inspira tion in them .

Before many years pass , half the world will so develop that it will recognize and under stand from whence all knowledge and under standing is given and will lean not on earthly knowledge or mortal thought but on spiritu al guidance alone .

As Count Tolstoi has said , The Spirit world Y ou is able to inspire many these days . will fin d in time that human beings will become more sensitive instruments for us ! the Spirit voices will be heard everywhere and the Truth ” shall then be known . This scou rging of today is really but the passing ou t of the accumulation of Sin that is in the world , Greed , Hate , Godlessness
