  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

During these challenging times, it’s an honor to know we have your continued support and encouragement. While 2020 has thrown us quite the curve ball, we have adjusted and pivoted to continue our investments in and support of the New England community. More specifically, we are proud to have augmented our RBI & Red Sox Scholars programs with innovative virtual content and curriculum that ensured consistent support of our young participants. This was only possible through your generosity. Thank you! We have made every effort to continue our traditional events that fuel our ability to provide programming and grants to the community. While we would have preferred to celebrate in person, we are thrilled to announce this years’ class of Hall of Fame members as David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Rich Gedman, Bill Dinneen and Dan Duquette. We are also excited to award both Phill & Liz Gross and The Boston Beer Company with the Fenway Honors distinction for their ongoing commitment to the community through philanthropic initiatives, gifts and programming. What an amazing and accomplished list of recipients and inductees! While this Hall of Fame and Fenway Honors event salutes the personal success, commitment, and passion of our award winners, it is also an opportunity to recognize the impact of the Red Sox Foundation.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 25, 2020 * The Boston Globe Red Sox minor leaguer tests positive for coronavirus Julian McWilliams The Red Sox announced Tuesday night that a minor leaguer had tested positive for COVID-19. The player’s positive test occurred March 23 following his return home. The Sox said he was last at Fenway South March 15. The Red Sox kept the player’s name confidential and believe he contracted the virus after leaving spring training. As a precaution, the Red Sox decided to shut down all activity at Fenway South for at least two weeks. The facility will undergo a deep cleaning to disinfect the area. The Sox have instructed all players who came in close contact with the minor leaguer to self-quarantine for two weeks. Manager Ron Roenicke noted during a conference call last week that most of the major league players had returned home, but approximately eight to 15 players stayed back to work out. During that call, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said although a player hadn’t tested positive for the virus to that point, he knew it was a possibility. “That’s something we’re being very vigilant in monitoring,” Bloom said. “You look around and where this is going, obviously we know that it’s very, very possible that it’s going to happen at some point. We’re just trying to make sure everyone is educated and, again, stay in touch with everybody.” A new group is advocating for minor leaguers to be paid above the poverty line Michael Silverman A new group thinks minor league baseball players ought to earn a salary above the poverty line.
