She has taught & performed internationally in over 33 countries. As a 2003 graduate of Manhattan School of Music, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance & Composition. The New York jazz scene inspired her and she Kim Thompson had many performances with Wallace Roney, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Stern, Jason Moran, Kenny Barron & Rufus Reid. Her diverse career also includes work with her current boss – Beyonce Knowles, as well as Kanye West, George Michael and Richard Bona. Her popularity and percussion prowess has landed her endorsements from YAMAHA drums, ZILDJIAN cymbals, and VATER sticks. Of her spiritual approach to jazz Kim says ““Jazz music is just you being you, and you just loving life, and you loving God, and God loving you back.” Performing in Kim’s group is one of the rising jazz guitar stars – Mike Moreno. Originally from Houston, Texas, Mike began studying music at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school that is renowned for its musical alumni, including Jason Moran, Robert Glasper & Beyonce. Mike moved to New York City, attending the New School University with the highest scholarship the school had ever given to a guitar player. While working in NYC he impressed many jazz luminaries and was hired Mike Moreno to play with the Joshua Redman Elastic Band, Nicholas Payton Quartet, Terence Blanchard Quintet, Greg Osby 4, Wynton Marsalis and the JALC Orchestra, Jeff “Tain” Watts Quintet, Kenny Garrett Quintet, and Ravi Coltrane Quartet. Mike has released his debut CD “BETWEEN THE LINES” on World Culture Music and more recently has recorded his follow up record for the renowned Jazz Label - Criss Cross Records. We hope that you all come out to hear this inventive and passionate jazz ensemble! 5 “Stuff We Like” is The Vibe’s music review column. Unlike typical columns that look at only new recordings and give both thumbs up or thumb down, we are instead taking a positive spin, sharing the stuff we really like and not wasting your time with stuff we don’t. We see all recordings through the history of jazz as game for the column. Over the coming months you’ll find reviews of all shapes and styles of jazz from all eras.

  • Cyrus Chestnut
Cyrus Chestnut Born on January 17, 1963, in Baltimore, MD; son of McDonald (a retired post office employee and church organist) and Flossie (a city social services worker and church choir director) Soulful jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut might just be proof positive of the impact that music has on babies in the womb. Either that, or a life in music was simply in his blood. Chestnut's father, a postal employee and the son of a church minister, was the official organist for the local church in Baltimore, Maryland, where Chestnut grew up. Young Cyrus's home was filled with the sounds of the gospel music that his church-going parents played in their home, along with jazz records by artists such as Thelonius Monk and Jimmy Smith. Chestnut has said that the roots of his love of music began there, and to this day, Chestnut's ties to the gospel church remain constant. "Growing up, gospel music was what I heard in the house," Chestnut told Down Beat magazine. As a boy Chestnut reached for the piano keys before he could walk, so his father began teaching the earnest three-year-old to play the piano. One of the first songs young Cyrus learned was "Jesus Loves Me." Before long, seven-year-old Cyrus was playing piano in the family church, and by age nine he was promoted to church pianist at Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Chestnut, who became known for his improvisational skills and unique jazz-gospel and bop style, has credited his abilities to those formative years when he played at church.
