Dedication

This book is dedicated to my editor, my best friend, and my bride of almost 39 years, Sherry Jacobson-Beyer (Class of '68). It is with her help, her support, her love, and her forgive- ness for the many late nights and long days I toiled over this labor of love (& the website, too) this book exists. —Harry Jacobson-Beyer, August 24, 2013

page 3 Seneca High School Class of '63 Seneca High School Class of 1963 50 years and counting! What a remarkable period of history we have experienced and what wonderful opportunities we have had! Our classmates have travelled all over the world to places we studied in history and geography classes. We have been to Europe, China, South America, Africa and who knows where else? Some of us lived in Eur- ope and one of our classmates, Peachie Schulman, has made her home in Israel. We have had wonderful careers in teaching, coaching engineering, soldiering, medicine, dentistry, law, business, accounting, banking, real estate, politics, insurance, and graphic design, to mention a few. We have been ministers, presidential aides, forensic scientists, airline pilots, rare book dealers, salesmen and women, homesteaders, therapists, college professors, physicists, builders, computer geeks, financial gurus, civil rights activists, stay-at-home parents, and much more. If there is one fictional character that defines us, it is Forest Gump. He is us, we are him and like him we have been there for the momentous events of our half-century. The years following our graduation were life changing. We suffered through three political assassinations and a war in Vietnam. We marched for the end of racial segregation and equality for all. We cheered when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, when the draft ended, and when the civil rights act of 1964 was signed into law. During our life time the the glass ceiling cracked, the Berlin Wall crumbled, the Soviet Union disintegrated, and apartheid dissolved. We have seen one president resign and another impeached. We have cried as the twin towers fell. Technology, too, has changed our lives. We went from vinyl records and reel to reel tape to 8 track and cassette tapes and from them to CDs and then iPods. We were in awe when we learned we could video tape our afternoon soap operas and watch them after work. We saw JR get shot and the rebirth of Start Trek. We witnessed the emergence of computers and the demise of typewriters. We went from three television channels to hundreds. With the advent of the world wide web the World Book became an anachronism and the USPS will soon follow. We no longer wait for the postman to bring us missives from friends and loved ones but check our email in the middle of the night when we get up to pee. Have a friend in Timbuktu, fire up your computer, iPad, or cell phone, open Skype and give her a call, for free! We are the embodiment of change. As Forest Gump is wont to say “Life is like a box of chocolates.” And we, my friends, have tasted them all. Enjoy the weekend! page 4 Seneca High School Class of '63

Susan Armbruster Mullen Spouse/Partner: Scott A. Barnaby 17 Wareham Court Scotch Plains, NJ 07576 H: 732-428-4882 Cell: 917-841-7329 [email protected] (Jun '13) Never having been much of a student, I quit UK in my junior year to move to NYC, where I lived for 39 years. I was a Typographer there for 23 years, then ran my own home-based graphic design/typesetting business. I finally returned to college at age 50, earning a degree in Corporate Communications, graduating with a 3.97 GPA! It was truly one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I then worked at a private country club in New Jersey as the buyer of the clothes in the golf shop. Not much money, but loads of fun and I was able to play golf at a beautiful course. Love to travel, most recently to Amalfi Coast, Italy, and Sonoma County, CA. My next trip will be a river cruise from Paris to Normandy in the fall. Divorced after 27 years of marriage. I now share my home with a wonderful man, a PGA professional, with whom I spend winters in Florida playing golf. In fact I recently bought a house in PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, so will be spending more time there in the future. I am active in my town home community in Scotch Plains, NJ, and served on the Board of Directors for four years. I currently administer the website for them. I am starting a new career in real estate, and just passed the NJ state exam in June.

Joyce Baker 19 Silk Oaks Drive Ormond By The Sea FL 32176 386-299-0565 [email protected] (Jul '08) Marriage, children, and a career in real e- state and antiquities came before my move to Mi- ami and return to college in the early '70s. My continued education was interrupted again by the birth of identical triplet boys in 1979. I attended Florida International University, Miami, FL; UC Berkeley, CA; Melbourne Medical School, Victoria, Australia. After undergrad and a stint of teaching hearing impaired and special needs children I returned to my alma mater’s grad division. Internship and residency in forensic chemistry and anthropology was done at the Dade County Medical Examiner Department where I stayed on (as a forensic anthropologist) after completion of my studies. Miami had been home for more than half my life and it was a big change in mid 2003 to semi-retire to our beach home almost 400 miles to the north. Around this time, my husband, best friend, and long time partner, Thomas Murphy, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within months. (Aug '13) I have four children and six grandchildren: Carole (Max, the very best son-in-law in the world)—Elizabeth, Ian and Noah; John (Kim, The very best daughter-in-law in the world)—Liam; Christopher and his wife have two beautiful princesses—Christi and Viviana. My son David is not married and has no children. A new career in the Asian Martial Arts Film Industry could be in the future. Recently, I spent six weeks in Cardiac ICU and three more in a skilled nursing facility (rehab). My nephrologist and also my surgeon (the prerequisite second opinion) told me that I had "dodged a bullet." If I can avoid a bullet, then slings, arrows and crouching tigers should be a snap. I'll probably have to watch all the Matrix movies for pointers. I am retired from a job I enjoyed (recovering tissue and organs for transplant and research). I miss working but my life is full. For now, my goal is to regain my strength and stamina. There are still some things on my list that I have to do, but none that I wish I hadn't.

I’m still singing folk music and get together often with the “Mariners” who frequently sang at Village Inn in Hikes Point during the 60s.

Betty Beale 1998 South Road Gabriola Island, BC V0R 1X6 250-247-0122 [email protected] (Jul '13) Seneca High School: Jan 1959 - Jan 63 (when my family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area). Terra Linda High School, Marin Co, CA, grad 1963. Mills Col- lege, Oakland, Ca, 1967 Honours BA in Philosophy, Religion and Sociology I worked as a caseworker for the NYC Department of Social Services 1967-68, then went "back to the land" from Berkeley to Lagunitas to Mendocino, CA. In 1970 I emigrated to Canada with a Vietnam War protestor/draft dodger (with an Art Degree from U of N. Carolina). I cherish those years of learning to live simply, sometimes communally, mostly rural - growing food, making music and crafts, practicing a spirituality in harmony with nature on the beautiful BC coast. And then there were those important learnings from mistakes and failures. In 1982 my life as single mother of 4 began at a Women's Shelter. The Women's Movement, good friends and the Department of Social Services (as a client this time) helped me get on my feet. I went back to school with my children - aged 3 - 15. I received a MDiv degree from the Vancouver School of Theology in 1989, and was ordained to the ministry. From 1989 - 2006 I worked as an Anglican Priest, most of that time in a small parish in New Westminster, BC, where we developed a large outreach program and community gathering place in a low income neighbourhood. In 2000 I married the Rev. Dr. Thomas Harding, a United Church of Canada minister and professor, and sailor. I took early retirement in 2006 and we moved onto our sailboat La Sonrisa II to sail the BC coast. The blog from 2007 - 2012 is www.lasonrisa2.blogspot.ca. And now we live on our "farmlet" on Gabriola Island, just off Vancouver Island. We work at living simply and sustainably, grow our own food and practice cooperative food production, use and learn about alternate energy, share with neighbours, and have a lot of fun. We cherish our 8 children (between us) and 5 grandchildren. And we enjoy living with our our chickens and ducks.

Fifty years, I don't know Sit and I wonder sometimes, Where they've gone And sometimes late at night, When I'm bathed in the firelight The moon comes callin' a ghostly white, And I recall, I recall” As that great Southern Poet, Johnny Winter, said: “I’m still alive and well. I’m Still alive and well. Every now and then its kind of hard to tell, but I’m still alive and well.” After graduation, I attended WKU for a little over two years before join- ing the Army in 1966. I served three tours in the Republic of Vietnam as a Military Advisor. After returning home I ended up in Clarksville, TN where I attended Austin Peay State University. After receiving my de- gree I spent the next 25 odd years in the restaurant business. Happily divorced. One daughter, Rebecca Blackburn Moose (31). A year later I married Jim Daniel four months be- fore he served as 2nd Lt. (Army) on a tour in Vietnam. My early career was as a “stay-at-home mom” for 17 years where I did PTA and church work as well as develop a “love” for the game of ten- nis. I re-entered the full-time work force when my son, Mark (now 37), en- tered the School of Architecture at GA Tech. He now owns his own fur- niture design firm in Chicago (Slatedesign), and is also an in-house designer for Crate & Barrel. My son, Ryan (now 34), was a marketing graduate of UGA and currently is a financial rep for BMW. Jim and I have 3 granddaughters, 1 grandson, and a new grand daughter expected 7/15/08! I am currently the Executive Assistant to the President/CEO of South- ern Insurance Underwriters and plan to retire in a few years to join Jim who is semi-retired after many years in industrial sales. We aspire to retire on a lake near the foothills of the North GA Mountains. I have lived in 6 states, love to travel and garden, but playing tennis is my passion! (Jun 30, 2008) (Jun '13) As of June 28, 2013, I retired from 23 years of full time em- ployment as an Executive Assistant for the President of an insurance company. I've had a great first week meeting new friends at Lake Ar- rowhead (north of Atlanta) where Jim and I relocated in Dec, 2010. Had fun walking on the lake trails, hydro biking on the lake, and shopping with friends at a quaint art/ creative design shop. The above photo is from a neighborhood party with the Company Re- tirement Dinner scheduled for July 4 at the Atlanta Athletic Club! It's been a great journey and I am most grateful for all I have experienced in my life.

Bob Bush (Sharon Slayton) 641 West Venice Avenue, Venice, Fl 34285 270-439-5015 (h), 270-839-5057 (cell) [email protected] (Jun '13) After I graduated from Western. I mar- ried Cathy Giles. We had a great life in Louis- ville and Hopkinsville, raising 2 children, Rob and Carey. After Cathy’s father died, I ran the family business, Giles Market, a Hopkinsville Landmark until Walmart came to town and made it impractical. I op- ened a Mail-boxes Etc. franchise (now UPS Store). After Cathy died, I was visiting the Branches and saw a photo of Strath- more Church graduates in 1963 that included Sharon and me. With the help of friends and Google, I located Sharon in Baltimore, and we’ve been together ever since. We enjoy living in the country, but we travel a lot to visit our scattered family, our beach property, train garden conventions, etc. We see Kili- jians, Kestlers, Branches, and Diehls often, and are looking forward to seeing other Seneca friends at the reunion. In early 2012, I sold my business and Sharon and I moved to a brand new home in Venice, FL. We are enjoying retirement.

Mickey Caller Baron (Gerald) 11904 Reading Room Road, Prospect, KY 40059 502-228-6688 [email protected] (Jul '08) I started school at Michigan State and left to backpack in Europe and the Middle East for a year. I returned and attended Physical Therapy school, graduating in 1969 and have specialized in working with children and currently work as a consultant for the Oldham County School system, Home of the Innocents, Hospice, & Seven Counties services. In 1970, I married Gerald Baron, an architect and we raised 4 girls: twins Leigh and Kerry, Mitzi, and Jamie. I love to travel and recently visited China, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. I moved to Louisville in my junior year of high school and remember that I dreaded coming to a new school from my small school in Missis- sippi. I was made to feel right at home at Seneca and still have fond memories of my time in Louisville. I still pronounce it “Louisville.”

Barbara Carter Paddock (John) 404 Pennyroyal Way, Louisville, KY 40223 502-245-2681 [email protected]

(Jul '08) After graduating from UK, I worked briefly in Manhattan, traveled, and generally got the wan- derlust out of my system. Returning to Louisville, John and I married and had two daughters. It may seem like a mundane existence, but it is one of extraordinary good fortune. My daughters, who are now grown have been my joy. Courtney, 31, lives in Stamford, CT and is with the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium. Her husband, Mark Keenan, an Irish lad she met during a year in Australia, is with Sothebys. Carrie, 27, based in Nashville, TN, works all over the country in television production. Both are graduates of Vanderbilt. With an empty nest and 2 knee replacements, the globe trotting has resumed…highlighted last year by zip-lining over the rainforest in Costa Rica. I'm also getting back into competitive duplicate bridge, and to show just how much time I do have on my hands, I'm addicted to Sudoku. page 15 Seneca High School Class of '63

Chuck Dobelstein (Mary Lou) 508 Sycamore Shoals Trace, Louisville, KY 40223 502-439-2429 [email protected] [email protected] (Jun '13) I graduated from UL. Have been married to Mary Lou for almost 45 years. We have 3 sons and 5 wonderful grands!!! Have lived in Louisville most of the time with a five year stint in Atlanta. My work career has been spent in the under-ground mining and tun- neling equipment business. This has taken me to some interesting (and strange) places in the world. There have been some innovative things on my resume that would only be interesting to those people that work underground. That probably leaves out most Seneca grads. I still work —but don’t travel as much. Will probably stay at it a few more years— it’s still fun and keeps the brain working. Travel, like the others in our class, is great. I started running just before I turned 40 and have completed 9 marathons and a bunch of minis. I still run most every day but the personal best times are now personal worsts. I play a lot of golf. My 3 sons and I played in the Streetball Showdown downtown a few years ago. We finished 2nd in our division —60+ year old men should not play streetball!!! We have visited a bunch of wine regions but have concluded that I can not afford to drink the wine I like but I can afford to drink the beer I like, so craft beer it is. We are involved with mission work through our church. Right now our emphasis is on the South Sudanese people and a local Kids Against Hunger chapter. Very rewarding. Many blessings and lots of joy and peace in my life.

Upon graduation, I entered the Army as a commissioned officer. I served two years including one in Viet Nam with a mechanized infantry battalion as a part of the 25th Infantry Division. In December, 1969, I started a com- mercial insurance career that spanned 43 years. Before retiring from Travelers in June, 2011, I was responsible for all of the company’s golf related business (golf courses and both PGA Tour and LPGA tourna- ments) as well as several other national programs such as the Girl Scouts of America. With the exception of five years in Dallas, I spent my entire career in Atlanta. My wife, Janice, and I married in 1990. I have a daughter, Tyler Leigh, who lives in Alpharetta, GA. At home now, my “kids” are two Cavalier King Charles puppies, Maxine and her daughter McCray. When I am not home in the Atlanta area, I can usually be found at our place on Hilton Head Island. I stay active going to the gym every day and trying to improve my golf game. Hopefully I will be able to resume playing tennis when I get my new knee. My real pastime passion is UGA sports where I don’t miss any football games and attend most home basket- ball games.

I’ve worked in the family business(es) over the years combining job and family as we have three wonderful children, Todd, Megan, and Natalie and now 8 grands (all under 7). We’re fortunate that they all live within 3 miles and I see them nearly every day as baby-sitting has become by second full time job. I love it. My passions other than family are golf and traveling. It’s been a great 45 years! (photo Jul '13)

Bobbie Evans Fritton (Vance) 7204 Shefford Lane, Louisville, KY 40242 502-425-8353 [email protected] (Jun '08) Vance and I were "high school sweethearts." This year we have been married 40 years. Our daughter, Amy was born in 1972. Our son, Alex, was born 5/5/77 exactly 17 years after we started going steady—the first time. Unlike the national average, we have lived in only 3 homes. Currently 22 years in the same home. We have been self-employed since 1982—first with a bicycle/moped/ hobby shop. The last 21 years we have had a hardware store—Vance's True Value (a little plug there) currently here in Prospect. We have 4 granddaughters. Two are "inherited" through marriage and Amy & her husband have identical twin girls who are 2-1/2-—ask me, I have pictures. (Jul '13) In the past 5 years, we have had quite a few changes in our lives. December 2010 we sold our hardware store and "retired." Vance was retired for all of 2 months and was hired at Lowe's and since has been promoted to Manager of the Hardware Dept. I worked for about 1- 1/2 years at a Hallmark shop and then discovered that a new hardware store was to open here in St. Matthews. Well, couldn't resist and was hired in June of this year. Am happy to be back in hardware. Our child- ren and granddaughters are all doing fine—girls are now 23, & almost 14 and the twins are 7-1/2. Life is busy, but manage to vacation in Hilton Head a couple of weeks a year. See you at the 50th (how can this be?)

After graduating col- lege with a BA, I married and moved to Washington, D.C. where my husband went to Law School and I taught junior high school. Four years later, we moved to Philadelphia where I started a family and became a stay at home mom. Three years later, we moved to Atlanta. Several years later I went to law school, graduated in 1981, and then started a law practice. Soon thereafter, my marriage dissolved. I have three children, Derrick, Dawn (deceased), and Brandon. I raised my sons as a single parent. In 1994 I married my wonderful husband, Bob Lederman. My sons live in Atlanta and I see them and my lovely granddaughters Ella and Avery regularly. I spend leisure time baby sitting, reading, traveling, cooking, walking, hiking, volunteering for non-profit organizations, and taking classes to learn new things.

(Jul 2008) I went east to college and never returned to Louisville, except for periodic vacations to visit family. I have been married to the same woman for 40 years, worked at the same law firm for 37 yrs., and lived in the same house for 34 years. Obviously, I have been very stable or very boring, or both! One of our daughters (Deborah) lives in Washington and is a public interest lawyer. The other (Julia) lives in New York and is a publicist at Penguin-Putnam. Phyllis and I love to spend time on the eastern shore of Maryland, and we also spend a month in New York City every year. My athletic ability is just as mediocre as it was in high school, and is now limited primarily to golf (still not as good as Jon) and running. (Jul '13) I am still working pretty much full time as a lawyer, although I stepped down as Chairman of my law firm. There is too much of inter- est going on in the world to stop quite yet. Maybe in a couple of years. I am still married to the same woman I married a year after getting out of college. We had our 45th anniversary this year. We have two grown daughters, one in D.C. and one in New York. Both are married, and we have an 8 month old grandson, as well as a 4 year old step grand- daughter. They are both incredible, and we are looking forward with great joy to spending much time with them in the years ahead. We did sell our house in the suburbs and moved downtown. That has been really fun. We also have a place on the eastern shore of Maryland, where we spend as much time as possible. I am looking forward to seeing many classmates at the reunion.

Terrie Gale Adler (Bob) 2311 Connecticut Avenue NW, Apt. 702, Washington DC 20008 919-942-6166 [email protected] (Jul '13) After Seneca, Smith College, the Congression- al Research Service, marriage to Bob Adler, law school & clerking for a judge, an eight month back-pack-style trip around the world, lawyering for the feds, having my son (the joy of my life), moving to Chapel Hill, NC, and nearly 20 nearly 20 years as an attorney for Chapel Hill Town government working mos- tly with the Town's police department, I am back in DC. We moved back in 2009 when President Obama appointed Bob to be a Commissioner of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Political junkies that we are, it is fun to be back in DC. The city is even more interesting than when we lived here before, but the political polar- ization is intense and destructive. I'm not quite ready to retire and am working part-time as an adjunct professor at George Washington University teaching pre-law Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. I love to travel and look forward to lots more of it. Looking back, I cannot say that I remember my Seneca years as fun (I made up for that in college). But the everyday rubbing shoulders with all sorts of people was a great experience that was probably as educa- tional for all of us as our classes. It's been interesting to read about classmates' lives, and there are many whom I wish I'd gotten to know better way back then.

What Happened in 1963?

George H.W. Bush Elected Chairman of the Harris County Republican Committee Feb. 20, 1963—Bush served as Chairman of the Republican Party for Harris County, Texas in 1964, but wanted to be more involved in policy making, so he set his stakes high: he aimed for a US Senate seat from Texas. After winning the Republican primary, Bush faced his opponent, incumbent Democrat Ralph W. Yarborough. Yarborough attacked Bush as a right-wing extremist, and Bush lost the general election.

Penn/ Howard Univ. (Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer Fellowship); Harvard Law School (LL.M.) In addition to my day job, I “did time” as an activist, musician, actor, playwright, and columnist for a weekly. (I even had a pony tail!) I was an active participant in noteworthy American historical moments of the late 20th century, co-parented two children, was divorced and remar- ried. My wife, Norma, is a bio-statistician and medical school professor at Tufts. I have a house in Maine and I learned how to cross country ski at age 42. I practice Lyengar Yoga each day and don’t have enough hair for a pony tail. Norma and I will soon be “empty-nesters” when our daughter starts college in September. I started my legal career as a clinical teacher at the Northwestern Legal Assistance Clinic in Chicago. Upon moving to in 1972, I was a staff attorney at Project Place Legal Services, where I represented poor people as well as advised progressive community organizations. While at Project Place, my book Communes, Law and Common Sense was published. In 1977, I was a member of the first delegation of Western lawyers who were invited to study the Chinese Legal System. From 1975 to date, I have practiced law as part of the community law office in Cambridge, Massachusetts, representing tenants, workers, community and political groups. I have also been a lawyer for persons engaged in acts of civil resistance, including Massachusetts offshoots of the Occu- py Wall Street movement, as well as those arrested in eviction blockings. As a teacher, I was the Director of the Legal Studies Program at the Goddard-Cambridge Graduate School. After teaching at U. Mass- Amherst and Northeastern Law School, since 1979, I have been a Su- pervising Attorney and Clinical Instructor at the Harvard Legal Aid Bur- eau and teaching member of the Trial Advocacy Workshop. In 2008, I drafted anti-predatory lending legislation which protects tenants after foreclosure. I am also currently advising cities and towns about taking “underwater” mortgages by utilizing their eminent domain power. In August, 2013, my LL.M. thesis will be published in the on-line legal journal Unbound.

(Jul '08) I went to Miami of Ohio as a chemistry ma- jor and emerged with a BA in economics. I was married at age 21 and had two sons before my 25th birthday. That marriage was doomed from the start, but I met the real love of my life in 1971 and we have been mar- ried now for 33 years. Her name is Mary Ellen and she was born in County Galway Ireland, having moved to the Philadelphia area (where we live) at age 11. Explaining to her parents how she ended up with a divorced Jew from KY with two kids was quite a challenge. But we got custody of those kids and she raised them to be fine, not so young anymore, men and they have given us four beautiful grandchildren aged 4 to 8. My career has been in corporate finance. I owned my own investment banking firm for 15 years and now work in mergers & acquisitions for one of my former clients. My lifelong passion has been sports of all kinds, especially golf and skiing, which we enjoy with family and friends.

(Ju '13) I'm still practicing law at the same firm where I have been since 1975 and still living in the same "much demanding of time and money" pre-Civil War home in Pewee Valley outside of Louisville. The latter has at least something to do with the former. Doing much less gardening than in the past, but more leisure time reading (almost exclusively fic- tion) and following various favorite sports teams (e.g. Wild-cats and Dodgers). Sallie's update correctly points out our happiness over our four granddaughters and the amount of time she spends visiting not just the Lexington ones, but also the ones in Charlotte. My memories of high school and of our class are as strong and vivid as ever.

What Happened in 1963? Battle of Ap Bac January 2—The Battle of Ap Bac was a small-scale battle early in the Vietnam War which resulted in the first major combat victory by the Viet Cong against regular South Vietnamese and American forces. The battle took place on January 2, 1963, near the hamlet of Ap Bac, 65km (40 miles) southwest of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. Forces of the 7th Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), equipped with armored personnel carriers (APCs) and artillery and supported by American helicopters, confronted entrenched elements of the Viet Cong 261st and 514th battalions.

Leslie Henderson Sheehan 3347 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40207 502-897-7612 [email protected] (Jun '08) I graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 1967 with a major in Spanish and Art History. Later I went to U of L and took a lot of art courses, and re- ceived a degree in Interior Design. In 2001, I went to New York University and obtained a certificate in Appraisal Studies. I currently have my own appraisal business, though I am taking a break from it to paint and work on a book about a pilgrimage, backpacking trip I took on the Camino de Santiago, in Spain. Currently, my passions are painting, contemporary art, and travel; and seeing my adult kids. My daughter is an archaeologist, who sometimes lets me visit her when she is working on a Mayan site in Central Amer- ica. She sort of lives my "unlived life." (Jul '13) Currently, I am involved with spreading the word about Climate Change. I belong to 350.org, an environmental group. After walking the "Camino de Santiago de Compostela" I decided to use my feet to do my part for the environment. I have participated in several walks in the past few years, and will walk from Harper's Ferry to DC beginning on July 22. We will walk into DC on the 26th and participate in a Climate Change Rally in front of the White House on July 27. In February we had 40,000 people at a gathering there. Luckily for me, I have a son in DC I can visit. My daughter lives in Brooklyn so I can head up the coast to visit her.

Brenda Igo Townes (Wavey) 542 Garden Drive Louisville, KY 40206 502-895-5942 [email protected] (Jun '08) I was a pre-med major in college, but back in the sixties women were rarely accepted to medical school if they were married. Wave (Wavey) Townes (Seneca-class of '62) and I had started dating again, first dating back in the Seneca years, and I did not apply to medical school but married in the summer of 1967. I finished a masters while he went to law school. I taught for a few years before our daughter and later our son were born. Running became a real passion for me in the 70’s, and after running a marathon in 1982, which was something I thought I could never do, I began to think—could I still go to medical school? I bought the MCAT book and studied secretly for a year before I had the confidence to an- nounce my decision to apply to medical school. As our daughter put it, our whole family then went to medical school. Certainly, without their support, particularly Wave’s, I could not have done that. I’ve been in practice 16 years now and love it. Our daughter, Courtney, is a lawyer, married to a lawyer and they have three children (ages 8, 6 and 4). Our son, Will, has just finished his masters in architecture. Wave and I enjoy traveling, gardening, and hiking, and I still run every day (at least I call it that). (Jun '13) Our son, Will, was married to Catarina Passidomo of Na-ples, FL last fall. She is finishing her PhD in geography at U of GA. Will has recently accepted a job with an architectural firm in Greenville, SC. Our daughter, Courtney, has recently started practicing law again, this time with Wave. She is married to Brian Good, also a lawyer and their children are now 9, 11, and 13. Wave and I still work, travel, enjoy hiking and running.

Regina Jacobs Caplan (Harris) 1338 E. Steamboat Bend Drive, Tempe, AZ 85283 (480) 838-7629 [email protected] (Jul '08) After graduating from Ohio University with a degree in Elementary Education, I taught in Cincinnati, Ohio for two years. My allergies became increasingly worse, so I moved out to Arizona for relief and a change in lifestyle. I wound up working as an accountant for a couple of different compan- ies, so I eventually returned to college to take accounting courses and sat for the CPA exam. In the meanwhile, I married a Phoenix native and moved to the suburb of Tempe, AZ. My husband and I have hiked and biked for many years until recently, due to my degenerative spinal problems. In 1980 and 2000, we toured China with my husband’s adoptive Chi- nese family. I am currently working part time for a nonprofit and my husband is retired. Our children are two parrots named Miki and PeeWee who we love very much. (Jul '13) I retired in 2011 and have been keeping busy doing vol-unteer work and paying more attention to running our household. My husband wanted more home cooked meals which keeps me busy as I have not previously had much time to experiment with different dishes.

Of the album's fourteen songs, eight were written by Lennon/McCartney, early evidence of what Rolling Stone later called "[their invention of] the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments." The album was released by Parlo- phone in mono (catalogue number PMC 1202) and stereo (PCS 3042.)

Teacher’s corps—1972–'74. I have been a kindergarten teacher and school librarian. My last paying job was coordinator of children's services at the Louisville Free Public Library. My best gig ever began in 1997, when I became “self-unem- ployed, living off the fruits of my wife’s labors.” In 2008 I went on Social Security so now I am "retired," and that's a pretty good gig as well. I married Sherry Beyer (Seneca,'68) in 1974. Prior to our marriage I le- gally changed my last name to Jacobson-Beyer. In 1980, we adopted our son, Keith, who was 8 years old. He is a finan- cial planner and lives in Fairhope, AL, with his wife, Jenny, a marine biologist, and his two children, Ethan (8) and Taylor (3). We also have a 25 lb. cock-a-poo, Elliot, who owns my heart. I fill my days with volunteer work, bicycling with Sherry on our recum- bent tandem bicycle, going to lunch and movies with friends, updating web pages, reading, and, of course, fixing my bride's dinner every day. In addition I study Spanish with a tutor, attend classes at the University of Louisville in their tuition remission program for seniors, and write for the student newspaper, the Louisville Cardinal. Sherry and I have traveled to Portugal, Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapa- gos Islands. We have studied Spanish and lived with families in Costa Rica, Chile, and Spain. We are truly fortunate in our life together. It con- tinues to be a grand adventure.

Martha Johnson Feldmann (Larry) 6391 Wood Bridge Rd., Memphis TN 38119 (901) 767-2660 [email protected] (Jul '13) I skipped senior year to attend U.K. I missed a lot, especially the basketball champion- ship, but I am happy I got to attend the prom and participate in graduation. I remember with fond- ness many classmates and also special teachers: Mrs. James, Mr. Matthews, and Mr. Freer. I love Louisville and visit Sherrie Kruse each year and see Evie Whitworth and other friends. I was blessed to grow up in such a great place with such fine people. After Lexington, I lived for a year in central California and then in won- derful San Antonio, Texas, before settling in Memphis in the early 70s. I married Larry Feldmann, and we have a daughter and now two grand- sons, the lights of my life. I taught history for a quarter-century, and Larry and I traveled abroad quite a bit, mostly to western Europe, but also to Russia and Japan. I had a stroke at 52; recovered quite well, but now I limit my travel to flying around this country visiting my favorite people and limit my work to church, DAR and other old-lady stuff, and checking on my 90+ mother who lives nearby. Hope the 50th reunion is a success, and I look forward to hearing all about it from Sherrie and Evie. 1963: Ladies Fashions

After receiving undergraduate (Bache- lors of Music) and graduate (Master of Arts in Teaching) degrees, I was married in 1970 to Ken Albrecht (Principle [French] horn in the Louisville Orchestra for 40 years). We had three children: Matt an engineer at UPS & married with two children, Emily—an engineer at GE & married with one child, and Char- lotte, who is working on her PhD at the University of Minnesota and is about to graduate. It’s been great to witness first hand how Louisville has grown to attract so many young professionals, including our own children. Staying in Louisville also allowed both Ken and myself to be with and help our elderly parents until the end of their lives, which most people in such a mobile society do not get to do. I am happy to still be working at the job that helped provide for all three of our children’s educations: Real Estate. I am with Carol Luthi Associates in St. Matthews, and I have worked Louisville and the surrounding areas for the past 21 years. It has been very rewarding in many ways. We have done some traveling abroad, and hope to do much more. We are planning to travel to Venice and Rome in April of this year.

Jul '08) I majored in English at U of Ky.,and worked at Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park, in the summer. After my studies were completed, I married and moved to Rochester, New York. There my son Greg, and daughter Sara, were born. In 1978, the family moved to Columbus, Ohio. I have been here 30 years now. I taught International and American regional cooking, as well as did cat- ering. I had my dream job as Program Director for the International Visi- tors Council of Columbus. Having already been fortunate to travel the world a great deal, it allowed me to also travel vicariously on a daily basis! My son now works for his father’s company, developing computer soft- ware. My daughter is the Director of Sourcing, for corporate Abercrom- bie & Fitch. She also travels the world for her work. I have a bright and delightful 8 yr. old grandson. My passion is still tra- veling, especially if I can do a little kayaking. I have paddled in such places as Alaska, the Bay of Fundy, Key West, and many lovely waters in between.

(May '13) Since the last reunion we have two more grandchildren for a total of four. I have a Smart phone now, but my 9 year old granddaugh- ter had to show me how to send/reply to text messages. I am now employed by my son who bought my insurance agency in 2010. Even though I’m pretty much worthless, he still allows me to come to the office. We have no plans to move out of state, but occasional visits to different parts of the USA to see friends has been and will be on our agenda. Wish I had more exciting things to report, but we just continue to lead peaceful lives and, fortunately, are still on the right side of the grass. Thank you to the reunion committee who are working so diligently on the 50th celebration. See everybody in August.

After graduation I did psycho- logical testing for a private firm and taught Special Education at Newberg Elementary for 4 years. I then went to the Cen- tral Office as part of a Regional Diagnostic Team. I did testing and placement of students K-12, working with parents, teachers, counse- lors, and principals for the next 23 years. In 1972, I married James Rowe and we divorced 32 years later. After retiring in 1997 from JCPS, I learned to play the piano and the bagpipe. I took oil painting and basket weaving classes. Five years ago I adopted a 4 month old Border Collie mix from a shelter and we have been volunteering together at the Episcopal Church Home and Jeffer- son Place ever since. I enjoy music, cross-stitch, art, reading and tra- vel…BUT I would rather be on the golf course! (Jul 13) My border collie mix (now 10 years old) and I are still visiting the same nursing homes but have added the Masonic Home to our list. In April 2013, I participated in Mayor 's "Give A Day" by working at St. Joseph's Children's Home with 11 others from various businesses in the community. It was a long and tiring day, but very rewarding. I have continued with classes at UofL learning Tai Chi and playing the Mandolin. My interest in cars (you may remember me driving a 1950 green Willy's Jeepster convertible in high school) has led to recently selling my 1974 red, chrome bumper MGB and purchasing a 1995 green E320 Merce- des convertible. I am still playing bridge, having dinner once a month with two different groups, traveling in the USA, meeting new people, and enjoying friends and family. What Happened in 1963? I was the administrative assistant to the Juve- nile Court Judge in Madison where Beth was born. In 1970, we moved to Chicago where Kathy was born, and then in 1972 to Bloomington, IN Dick's career as a university professor in the fields of Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, and Engineering at SIU Carbondale, Indiana University at Bloomington, and the University of Texas at San Antonio has created significant and meaningful commitments to education and the growth of San Antonio which we have shared. In 1976 we moved to San Antonio where I taught English at UTSA for nine years, and taught middle school English for seven years. During that time, I completed my second MA in Education and my Licensed Professional Counselor license. For two summers, I also was a volun- teer Camp Director for Kids with Individual Differences, a Girl Scout summer residential camp which started the first camp for autistic child- ren in Texas. KIDS Camp also served children with mental retardation. That camp transitioned to the Children’s Association for Maximum Po- tential for whom I was a volunteer and board member for nine years. In 1996, I began the career I had planned since my days at Emory. I am a high school guidance counselor at a large, diverse urban high school whose ethnic and socioeconomic population reflects the demographics of the state of Texas. During these seventeen years, I have helped de- velop a magnet program within the school called the Engineering and Technologies Academy for whom I am the counselor. ETA now has o- ver 350 students who want to be engineers, architects, scientists, and students in information technology. It is very rewarding work to help all students whom I serve to develop new paradigms for themselves. We have two wonderful daughters and five fine grandchildren. Beth (Stanford BS, MS Engineering) is an executive with Hewlett Packard. She and her three children and her husband, live in Sunnyvale, CA. Kathy (MIT BS Biology, U Mass., MA) has been a biology teacher, mu- seum science coordinator and mentor teacher. She and her two child- ren and her husband, live in Palo Alto, CA. Dick and I spend as much time as my counseling career allows visiting with them. I have developed a love for organic gardening and since 1976 I have been working to develop our own organic garden here. I am committed to counseling my students at Roosevelt, to our children and grand- children, and to my organic gardening. Life continues to be very good.

Following a shortened mil- itary career at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, I began teaching and coaching at Flaget HS in Louisville and later at Seneca for a year. The two most humbling experiences in my career were the naming of the football field in Sylvester, GA the "Milt Miller Field" and being induct- ed into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Asscociation Hall of Fame in Dal- ton, GA. There were a lot of great kids and coaches responsible for those things happening. After 33 yrs. of teaching/coachiing, I was a sales rep for a football field equipment company for 10 yrs. Upon retiring in Feb, 2012, my wife of 42 yrs, Donna (Washington, GA), and I still reside in Lake Park, GA. Our daughter, Traci, lives in Athens, GA, and our son, Matt lives in Newnan, GA. Judy Muir LeClaire (Alan) 3405 Rainview Circle, Louisville, 40220 502-491-1630 [email protected]. (Jun '13) Hello Class of 63. Since high school I went straight into the working world. Some of my occupa- tions included, clerical, accounting, small animal care, and facilities. In 1979 I went to work at two dif- ferent local animal hospitals. I love taking care of everyone’s pets. My 11 yrs. years at animal hospitals satisfy my desire to work with animals. I left the animal care career to go to work for C&I Engineering where I have been for 20 years. Lord willing I will retire from there, I’m not ready to stop work just of yet. I married after graduation to a fellow I met as a junior at Seneca and we married soon after. In 1964 our son was born, Clifford. In 1968 we were divorced. Cliff and I lived on our own for about of nine years. In 1977 I met Alan LeClaire while working at KAEC. Alan and I married in 1978. Thirty-five year later we are still together. My son Cliff is retired from the Louisville Fire Department. He and Ly- nette are raising two girls, Lauren is 20 and in her second year at U of L, to become a pediatric nurse. Amanda is a sophomore at Mercy High school and just turned the big 16. Alan and I have a home in Four Season neighborhood. We will have lived there 19 years. Alan is an office manager for a small retail shop and besides working for C&I Engineering, a consulting engineering firm, I’m on the Four Season Neighborhood Association board as their treasure. I enjoy gardening, walking with our Dalmatian, reading and studying the Bible also its history, and archaeology. We are members of Southeast Christian Church, Blankenbaker campus. Our future plans, one day, will be to go to Israel and see some of the places I’ve been reading about.

Melvin Muir 9505 Slayton Ct., Louisville, KY 40229 502-968-0039 – H, 502-930-6920 – C (May '13) After high school I worked for GE for two years. Then I attended United Electronics Institute and after two years received a degree in electronics. Shortly thereafter Uncle Sam contacted me and de- cided I wasn't going to dig foxholes so I enlisted in the Navy. I was in the Seabees - a mobile construction battalion. I had a month of survival training and then in October or November of 1966, after 8 weeks of military infantry training, I received orders to go to Vietnam. I stayed on active duty in the navy for six years and three months. After I was discharged I joined the Naval Reserves and retired from there in July, 1972. After discharge from the navy, I worked at Ford Motor Company from 1972 or '73 until 1985, when my father asked me to join him in his well drilling business in Palm Harbor, Florida which is just north of Clear- water. It was not a good decision. My father sold the business in 1990, and I moved back to Kentucky. Soon after, I received my commercial trucking license from the Bowling Green Commercial Driving school and was a cross country truck driver until I retired in 2009. I never married although I dated our classmate Anita Lane for a while. I lost track of her and would like to find her. Editor's note: Melvin is one year and 14 days older than his sister Judy. He had Rheumatic Heart disease after his first grade year and missed a whole year. He started school again when Judy was in the second grade.

Charles Myers (Jane Ellen) 230 Cochran Road, Lexington, KY 40502 859-266-0967 [email protected] (Jul '08) After graduation, I attended W & L University and George Washington University. Returning to Louis- ville, I taught at Waggener HS before taking an admini- strative position at Morehead State University where I retired after 28 years and am now teaching at Lexington Catholic High School and am a campus director for the Governor Scholars Program. I have been married to Jane Ellen for 38 years and we have one son, Todd, a practicing attorney in Lexington. Todd and his wife, Colette, have 2 children, Josh 5 and Mallory 3, which is the main reason I still have to work. page 55 Seneca High School Class of '63

Roanete Naamani (Edward Goldman) 7895 Rollingknolls Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45237 513-731-0110 [email protected] (Jul 08) Hard to believe it’s been 45 years I’ve been happily married for 41 years to Edward Goldman (pro- fessor). We have two wonderful children: Ari, working in editing and publishing in New York City, and Dalia, a financial journalist who lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband Andrew. Dalia went farther in journalism than I. My undergraduate work was in French Literature (merci, Mlle. Arnold). I completed doctoral work in counseling and child psychology and practiced for 35 years, retiring two years ago. Now I serve as a presiding judge for the Hamilton County (Ohio) Board of Elections, do volunteer work, spend more time trying to be a better friend and a better daughter, and attempt to satisfy intense wanderlust to travel the world, which we manage to do six or seven times a year, just as Peachy Schulman predicted. I am grateful for life’s blessings and continue to look forward to the future. (Jul '13) Status quo and extremely grateful for life's blessings.

Marvin O'Koon (Janet) 2424 Valley Vista Rd., Louisville, KY 40205 502-456-6255 [email protected] (Jul '13) After graduating law school from the University of Louisville, I joined a law firm and eventually became an Assistant County Attorney in Louisville. In 1978, I served as General Counsel for the Kentucky Depart- ment for Human Resources. I am now a member of the law firm of O’Koon Hintermeister, PLLC with offices in Louisville and Indianapolis. My wife, Janet, and I live near where I lived when I attended Seneca. Janet’s daughter, Stephanie, attended Atherton High School and Indi- ana University and is now married and living in Washington, D.C. We play golf and tennis, but our passion now is fly fishing for trout. We have a cabin on Barren River Lake near Bowling Green, KY and spend what spare time we have on the lake or in the Cumberland River searching for the elusive rainbow. I have so many fond memories of my time at Seneca; it is very difficult to pick just one. I am glad we are getting together again. Helping to plan the event brings back a flood of memories.

Becky Owen Hickok (Pat) 2307 Littlebrooke Way Dunwoody, GA 30338 770-395-1298 [email protected] (Jul '08) After 30 years Pat sold his sporting goods business and is semi-retired. He kept his small em- broidery company which we now run together. He works part time and is involved in other business ventures. I work part time (usually 3 days a week). We enjoy traveling a lot and have been to some really nice places – Pat plays golf and I play tennis. My daughter (Tyler) and I work out together at least once a week. My other interests are gardening (no yard just flowers and herbs) and walk- ing. Life is good and we are all healthy—for that I am thankful.

Harriette Parris Schuler (John) 1816 Yale Drive, Louisville, KY 40205. [email protected] (Jun '13) After graduating from U of L, my best friend and I backpacked through Europe for the next two years working some very "odd jobs" along the way. With several friends we met while working in Munich, we saved enough to purchase a fishing trawler turned ailboat and sailed down the Dalmatian coast for several months managing to survive the stormy season and making some incredible memories. Returning to Kentucky, I married that same best friend and bought a farm in Henry County where John and I raised our two daughters, com- muting to Louisville to support our "country hippie" lifestyle. Thirty years later we moved back to Louisville and in October of 2012 became grandparents for the first time, prompting my recent retirement from the banking world. Lynn Partin Reese (Gibbs) 6930 Wythe Hill Circle, Prospect, KY 40059 502-228-0004 (h) [email protected] (Jul '13) After graduating from UK in 1967 with a teaching degree in English/Secondary Education, I married Gibbs, my college sweetheart and a gradu- ate from UK School of Architecture. We have lived, worked, and raised our family in Louisville ever since. Before retiring in 2007, I taught high school English off and on for 23 years in Jefferson and Oldham County. After working for several local architectural firms, my husband opened his own firm, Reese Design Collaborative, where he is still very active. We have two married daughters - Stephanie McCrery (Bryan) an in- terior designer and now President of Reese Design Collaborative, and Nicole Libby (Shon), a speech therapist in Naperville, IL. We have been blessed with four amazing grandchildren - two 9 year old grandsons and two granddaughters, ages 11 and 12. Marsha Perelmuter Bornstein (Edwin) 1407 Oxmoor Woods Parkway, Louisville, KY 40222 (502) 339-8261 [email protected] (Jul '13) Following college graduation I worked as a soci- al worker for Jefferson County, quitting prior to the arrival of our first child. We have 2 daughters, Lisa a teacher in Denver, and Michelle a clinical psychologist in Louisville. We are thrilled to have 2 grandsons and 2 granddaughters who are such a joy to us. The 2 girls were born 2 days apart in NYC and Denver (now, that was fun trying to take care of both of the mothers!). My leisure time is spent reading, enjoying all kinds of arts events and traveling several times a year. On weekends we love boating at our Barren River Lake home in Glasgow, KY. With each year I am more grateful for the treasure of my family and very good friends. page 58 Seneca High School Class of '63

Bill Perkins 4813 Grecian Ct., Louisville, KY 40272 (cell) 502-807-7616 (home) 502-935-1721 [email protected] (Jul '13) After graduating from business college my career began in accounting, which consumed most of my working life. A few years spent as a life underwriter for several in- surance companies and several sales positions with various retail and manufacturing companies fill in the rest. I am blessed to have five grandchildren; the best part is my daughter had three, which are now in their twenties, while my son waited until he was 30 to tie the knot. Now we have two grandchildren who are three and five years old, while the three older ones are in their early twenties. We've been able to enjoy both sets at different times, separated by over fourteen years!

Sheila Platoff 3001 Veazey Terrace NW, Apt. 1230 Washington, D.C. 20008 (202) 244-9230 [email protected] (Jul '08) After graduating from Ohio State with a degree in political science in 1967, I moved to Washington for what I thought would be a couple of years. Thirty-three years later, I retired from the federal government, having spent my career working on various domestic programs. During that time, I also completed a Masters Degree in administration at George Washington University. Since retiring in 2000, I have become active in an organization that works with diplomats from other countries who are posted to Washing- ton. Through this work, I have made wonderful friends from around the world. I’ve had the opportunity to travel in Scandinavia and Italy with Swedish diplomats and am getting to know the languages (it’s really hard when you’re our age) and the cultures of Japan and Turkey through the organization’s programs. I also enjoy cooking, bridge and traveling.

I earned a M.Ed. in Special Education from U of L in 1967; I took classes at the University of Missouri-St. Lou- is campus in 1968 and California State University-Long Beach in 1977. I earned a M.A. (1981) and a Ph.D. (1985) in psychology from Interna- tional College/Union Graduate School. After the death of my husband, I closed my counseling practice and re- turned to teaching. In 2003, I was awarded a Summer Fellowship in Journalism Education by the American Society of Newspaper Editors to Ball State. I have worked as a Special Education Teacher, Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice, Journal- ism Teacher, and ghostwriter. For a year or so, I had a weekly newspa- per column in Edgewood, New Mexico. Currently, I start in school all over again next month. I’ll be taking the art classes I feel I need to support my attempts at illustrating the children’s books I have been writing. I made a lot of money, lost a lot of money, made more money, partici- pated in interesting and boring activities, and made great as well as ter- rible decisions. I lived in St. Louis, Mo., Los Angeles, the East Mountains and Albu- querque, New Mexico, and Auburntown, TN. My relationships have been rich: Incredible mentors, good friends, two loving husbands [and one bad marriage], interesting clients, patients and students, delightful children and grandchildren. This has led to an incredibly rich and satisfying life. I write, design websites, brochures and flyers for family and friends. Many of my writings can be found on the WWW under my previous married name: Laura Russell, Ph.D. In 2003, it was a privilege to renew my friendship with Barbara Strauss. We experienced cancer at the same time, she with lung cancer and me with lymphoma. We spent hours on the telephone like we did when we were 14. She was an intelligent, witty, creative, giving, loving and de- lightful friend. She is greatly missed.

Stuart Robenson (Nancy—Waggener High School '64) 2015 Bainbridge Row Drive, Louisville, KY 40207 (502) 895-7086 [email protected] (Jul '13) Following an enjoyable six years at Seneca, I attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (along with Marc) majoring in ac- counting, as was predicted in our senior yearbook. In the fall of 1967, still not completely secure of a career path, I continued my studies at Georgetown University School of Law. That path became blocked by the U.S. Army when they informed me that “Uncle Sam Wants You.” Not to be deterred I contracted mono, giving me a temporary reprieve. Shortly thereafter, my wife of 45 years, Nancy and I were married in 1968. In 1970, while we were expecting our first child, Uncle Sam came calling again. About 2 months after Jeff was born, I began my active duty at Ft. Knox as part of a six year commitment with the Army Re- serves (at age 25, oh my). Since 1971 I have worked as a CPA, mostly in public practice, but also twice as a corporate controller. For the past 30 years I have been a partner with Welenken CPAs (also beginning its life in 1945) in Louis- ville. Nancy is a retired elementary school teacher with JCPS (began 20 year career at age 40). To this day we still verbally spar about the successes and achievements of graduates and sports teams of SENE- CA and Waggener High Schools (not even close, I am sure you will agree). Nancy and I are very fortunate to have two wonderful sons, Jeff in Louisville and Todd in Mason, Ohio, a northern Cincinnati suburb. Jeff is a corporate manager and he and his wife, Cheryl have a 9 year old son. Todd is a corporate attorney and he and his wife, Julie have an almost 9 year old son and an almost 4 year old daughter. Both sons do a considerable amount of business traveling, while Nancy and I try to do the same, but for our pleasure. We both look forward to seeing everyone at our 50th reunion (WOW). We will see if those class of ’64 Waggener graduates can pull off a re- union next year.

Eleanor Ruth Robins 4314 Westport Terrace, Louisville, KY 40207 502-893-2237 (h), 502-727-3690 (m) [email protected] (Jul '13) Graduated from Centre College with a major in English and a minor in French in 1967, from Kent School of Social Work (UL) in 1977 and from Brandeis School of Law (UL) in 1983. After an almost 31 year career teaching freshman English at UL (1970- 71) and working as an administrator for the Commonwealth of Kentuc- ky in social services and mental health (1971-2000), I joyously retired in September 2000. I was born to be retired! I love to travel, especially in England, Italy and France. I've done a lot of volunteer work since retiring, most recently with my church, Calvary Episcopal in downtown Louisville, where I've served on the vestry, as Junior and Senior Warden, continue to sing soprano in the choir and now head up the Landscaping Committee. I have two wonderful "dog kids", my boys Tanner and Lincoln, and have in the last four years fallen in love with the sport of beagling which keeps me busy most Sunday afternoons in the fall and winter. I also currently serve as the Trust Administrator for the Dachshund Club of America Health and Welfare Trust Fund.

Amy now lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband Fred Parker and our 2 grandchildren Alex, 10 years, and Libby 7. Ashley works for Waterfront Development Corp. here in Louisville. I went back to work for 13 years as librarian at Portland Elementary and retired about 9 or 10 years ago. Retirement is great! Now I love to read, play golf, work on genealogy and spoil our Golden Retriever, Jack. I'm also known as "Tim the Tool Man" by my husband who is a great yard guy but not exactly a Mr. Fix It.

Sally Rosenbaum Wax (Al) 2351 Ingleside Drive, Louisville, KY 40205 Home: 502.459.7941 Cell: 502.931.0957 [email protected] (July '13) Following graduation from Syracuse Uni- versity in 1967, I moved to Chicago where I worked as a copywriter, got married, then moved back to Louisville where I worked at WLKY-TV while my husband, Al Wax, at- tended UL Law School. Following a break of six years as a stay-at-home mom, I taught English composition and business writing at University of Louisville, produced communications seminars for area businesses, and ran a typesetting/ design business for over 25 years. Currently, I work at my husband's law firm and daydream about winning the lottery. I'm extremely proud of my husband and our nearly 45-year marriage, our two children, two grandsons, and one granddaughter. Whenever I can break free, I love punching holes in the sky in my Ces- sna 172 and hanging out with other airport geezers at where my plane is hangared. I'd rather fly than eat.

We have one son, Micha. All these years I've worked in early childhood, either teaching, lecturing or advising, including 5 years as advisor on early childhood education for the Golan Heights, when we lived there. In addition to my usual work, I travel around the country working with immigrants from Ethiopia, who have young children. I have written two handbooks for kindergarten teachers. The first, for teachers in developing countries, was translated into seven languages. The second is for teachers of Jewish kindergartens in Russia. I have taught courses in Thailand, the Philippines and Russia, mostly for the Cooperative Division of the Foreign Ministry.

Sallie Schulten (Greg Haynes) 115 Tuliphurst Drive, Pewee Valley, KY 40056 502-562-7363 [email protected] (Jul '08) Just so you know, we didn’t date in high school. Or college. Graduated in 1967 with a degree in English and polysci, with a teaching certificate that landed me in Aberdeen, MD for a year; then worked in biotechnology research in Washington DC before Greg and I mar- ried. Worked for the Justice Department before going to law school; gradu- ated from George Washington with a JD in 1975. Have practiced part time with two real estate development companies since then. We have three daughters: Kate, a Presbyterian minister in Charlotte, NC; Amanda, in government relations with eBay in Washington, DC, and Alexandra, also in Washington and working as a congressional press secretary. Kate’s (Colin Murphy) beautiful daughter, Calloway, is almost two and the most amazing granddaughter ever born. Hobbies: reading, cooking, gardening, moving children around from home to college to graduate school to apartments to homes; visiting Callie. Favorite Seneca teachers: Mrs. James (Greg’s too) and Mr. Matthews. And Mr. Buscheri, because he paddled my little brother as often as necessary. (Jul '13) I am now happily retired from practicing law and spend time volunteering; currently serving as president of the board of trustees of the Oldham County Public Library. Greg and I are still living in the mo- ney pit in Pewee Valley and have no plans to downsize (according to Greg). Our middle daughter, Amanda, and her husband have moved back to Kentucky from Washington, DC, and Greg says I spend more time in Lexington, where they live with two more of the most amazing grandchildren ever born, than the Kentucky Wildcats do. Oldest daughter Kate is still in Charlotte, NC, and has added amazing grandchild no. 4 to her family. Our youngest, Alexandra, was the last to marry, in August, 2010; our third and final wedding at Tuliphurst. She works as a communications director for a House committee and has thus far declined to produce any amazing grandchildren. She just ad- ded an obstreperous dog, Olive, to her household instead.

I have been in 37 states, Mexico and Canada….(I would love to hit the other 11 states, not Hawaii, unless I swim, I hate to fly) but, alas I don’t see that happening, at this point. Married 3 times, all my kids were by 1st, 2nd passed away, 3rd was a self centered, very jealous musician, bye, bye to him. My hobbies are many. Myles Lee Scott (Pam) 312 Norvelle Rd., Pendleton, KY 40055 502.523.9090 [email protected] (JuL '13) After Seneca, I attended U of L, joined the USAF, where it was discovered I had a knack for e- lectronics. I spend almost 4 years maintaining nucle- ar weapons. I married a Seneca grad ('67), worked in the high performance auto industry and lived in Jeffersontown. Then Janice & I went our separate ways. Pam and I met while we worked at Bechtel Equipment. We attended the 20th Seneca 1963 reunion together. Pam & I married in 1983 and will celebrate our 30th anniversary this September. We bought some acreage in Trimble County and started building a log house. Except for the concrete & plumbing, we did most of the work ourselves. When we were about 80 percent finished, I took an assignment with Bechtel in Saudi Arabia, working on an International Airport. I came home six months later and Pam had hired a contractor to finish the house. I specialized in Materials Management, Equipment Support, Procure- ment and Logistics. Later I worked all over the U.S. as well as Sum- bawa, Indonesia building a gold mine, Santiago, Chile on a desalinized water plant, Kuwait & Baghdad, Iraq supporting the US military after the 2nd Gulf war. I finished my career working on a coal fired power plant in Pretoria, South Africa. SA is a beautiful country which reminds me of the U.S. geographically. It has great weather and many fine golf cour- ses… I’m a hacker. I’m told I have a “baseball swing!” I played softball with Hank & Jim Swart after high school and remained competitive into my 60’s. I last played on an US Army team in Iraq, playing 1st base, after my outfield wheels fell off. Pam & I raised llamas, cows and horses for many years but only a few horses remain. We love the quiet & beauty of the country side. I retired in 2011. I told Pam I wanted an old car to take me back to my true love…cars. We found a 1955 Chevrolet which I enjoy caring for and making improvements, and enjoy cruising & auto shows with new made friends. I’m looking for a 30’s or 40’s Chevy pickup for my next project. We maintain our little piece of heaven, still enjoy U of L football tailgating, basketball and baseball (what a tremendous year for U of L sports).

(Jul '13) After graduating from Seneca High School, I attended vocational school. I got a job as a secretary to six underwriters. I worked there for two years. I got married in March, 1965. I quit my job to become a homemaker. I have been married to a wonderful Christian man for 48 yrs. We had two beautiful daughters. Our lives have been dedicated to our church. We have been active in many activities. We have a wonderful life, but it hasn't been without misfortune. We lost our eight year old daughter, Melanie, to cancer in 1983. We lost our eighteen year old daughter, Robin, to a car accident in 1984. They both were wonderful Christian girls, that were loved by so many. It was a very hard time in our life, but the Lord was with us thru it all. We are blessed to have many wonderful friends and family. They stood by us thru this time. Our faith in God is greater than ever. And we thank Him for His many blessings. Today my husband and I are still serving the Lord in the church I have attended for 67 yrs. and my husband for 71 yrs.

Inventions of 1963 So here are 10 surprising inventions from 1963: 1. The Lava Lamp—The Lava Lamp was invented by British inventor, entrepreneur and eccentric Edward Craven-Walker in 1963 and still manufactured today by his company, Mathmos. 2. The smiley face—The smiley face was invented in 1963 to motivate bored office workers. Harvey Bell was hired by a State Mutual Life Assurance Company to come up with something to make their unhappy employees a little less grumpy. It was originally just the smile, but he realized people could turn it upside down and make a frown, so he added two dots for eyes. 3. Push-button telephone—The first publicly available push-button tele- phone was released in 1963, by the Bell System. Dials remained the standard method of entering numbers on telephones for another 20 yrs.

Kenneth H. Silverstein PO Box 220818 Hollywood, FL 33022-0818 [email protected] 954-647-1155 (c) (Jul '08) After graduation I did my part to support most of the higher education institutions around Kentucky including University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University, University of Louisville, and Bellarmine College. While at U of L, I ran with an interesting crowd for a short time, one of whom was a journalism major and at the time was a friend with author Hunter S. Thompson; whom at the time was a young writer researching for the book "Hell's Angels On Wheels." After other various interesting jobs around Louisville, I was living and had a job based out of Chicago, which lasted a year. After becoming fed up with the Chicago winter and what was called "The Hawk" (the lake wind that went right through you!), my calling to sunny Florida became a reality due to family illness and the insistence of relatives to move to Hollywood, Florida. Starting my real estate career in 1969 via the Savings and Loan/Bank- ing business I learned the art of real estate appraisal. At the same time, I was learning real estate brokerage, management and development. Spending many years with several institutions, I worked until 1994 with California Federal S & L-Southeast Division based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, as Vice President of commercial real estate appraisal. At this time of major bank mergers my decision was made to go fulltime into the family 60±-year-old Real Estate business in Hollywood, Florida. I joined the International Federation of Realtors (FIABBCI) back then and each year traveled to a different foreign country to meet and learn how Brokers around the world deal in real estate. Since the recent passing of my uncle, the founder of the business, I have assumed the position of principal Realtor/Licensed Real Estate Broker. (Jul '13) I'm retired now, but still have an active Realtor/Real Estate Broker license, managing rental property and waiting to do nothing but travel!!!

Sharon Slaton (Bob Bush) 641 West Venice Avenue, Venice, Fl 34285 270-439-5015 (h), 270-839-5057 (c) [email protected] (Jun '08) I graduated in 1967 and married Don Gibson. We raised 2 children and were divorced in 1988. I began teaching at Towson University in MD (writing and American Lit from freshman to gradu- ate level) for 13 years. Marit graduated from there and went on to get a doctorate in Physical Therapy; she and her family are in PA. Mike has his own grassroots lobbying firm in Alexandria. I remarried and divorced again. Then, Bob Bush (Seneca first love) convinced me to quit my job and move to Hopkinsville and marry him. We’ve had 7 fantastic years together (again) enjoying travel to visit family, friends, beaches, other countries. At home we work in our yard and train garden and watch the corn grow. He works in his UPS store, and I volunteer on several boards that oversee foster care in KY. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at there reunion. In early 2012 Bob sold his business and we bought a house in Venice, FL and are enjoying retirement.

Kathy Smith (Dick Westfall) 3501 Pin Oak Drive, La Grange, KY 40031 502-241-8072 [email protected] (Jul '08) After graduation from Norton School of nurs- ing I worked in various settings including hospital, vi- siting nurse, medical office management, and my favorite, hospice. I have two sons and two grandchildren from my first marriage. With my second marriage I inherited four more children, ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. My husband, Dick, worked in pharmaceutical sales management. Since retirement we enjoy time with family and friends and traveling in our RV. Our three children together, dogs, love to go with us. We have been to most of the U. S. except for some of the northwest which we hope to see later this summer. Also, enjoy having the time to volunteer. If I do not make it to the reunion I wish you all well.

Inventions of 1963 So here are 10 surprising inventions from 1963: Continued from page 71 4. Computer mouse—Doug Engelbart invented the computer ‘mouse’ in 1963 in his research lab at SRI International (then Stanford Research Institute), for which the patent was issued in 1970. The basic idea first came to him while sitting in a conference session on computer graphics in 1961. He wondered what would be an efficient and easy way to control a pointer on a graphic display screen. One idea he had was to use small wheels traversing the tabletop, one turning horizontally, one turning vertically, each transmitting their rotation coordinates for analysis. With the wheels mounted in a small wooden box, and a cable connecting the box to the computer, ‘mouse’ was an obvious name for the new device. 5. Instant coffee—Freeze-dried instant coffee was first introduced by Maxwell House in this year. 6. Weight Watchers—Jean Nidetch founded Weight Watchers. Another sign that 1963 was the dawn of our modern world with its wonders and its side effects following post-war austerity. Continued on page 76

Mona Solinsky 7003 Ridge Run Circle, Prospect, Ky 40059 502-228-6662 or 855-1196 [email protected] (May '13) After graduation from Seneca, I mar- ried an Atherton grad, (big mistake) and then be- gan a family. Together we produced a really good son, Jeffrey. He is a published book author who focuses on leadership and creativity. He clearly gets his brains from my side—the Seneca side—of the family. Along my journey, these past fifty years, I have had some pretty cool adventures, such as: I was City Manager of Greyhound Bus Lines for nine years in Tampa. After nine years with them, I did a 360 and left Tampa for Ormond Beach where I, opened an upscale ladies boutique, "Mona's, of Course," and I eventually sold. Next... I returned to Louisville, six years later, to help my sister care for our gravely ill mother. Prior to her passing she gave me some really good advice “Go to College!” When mother spoke, Mona listened…and I am forever grateful for her wisdom. I began classes at the University of Louisville, at 45 years old! (Talk about nerve-wracking...). However, I am really stubborn, and pursued my classes doggedly. Fast forward four years. I graduated Magna Cum Laude, and don't laugh, but at 49 I ran for, and became U of L's oldest Homecoming Queen. After undergaduate, I went on to get my Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.), also as Magna Cum Laude. Today, I spend most of my time tutoring and mentoring special needs children around the greater Louisville area. Watching them learn and grow into young adults makes me very proud. When I'm not teaching I'm either hanging out with my wonderful sister, JoAnne; playing with the love of my life, Cayenne, the most gorgeous red-haired toy poodle you've ever seen; or I'm exercising and doing lots of Zumba. I look forward for our class reunion, as it will be my first...and hopefully not my last!

Joel Sonnheim (Joani) 3803 Sunrise Way, Louisville, KY 40220 502-456-1300 [email protected] [email protected] Since graduating Seneca, I have never left Louisville. My life has taken several twists and turns. I attended U of L and started a long career as a DJ, cutting my teeth on a small station (WCND) in Shelbyville, KY. I then got a job at WSTM-FM (now known as WRKA) where I started as a DJ, became program director and eventually operations manager while maintaining an air shift under the name of Dave Adler. During this time, I had the good fortune of interviewing numerous cele- brities including The Carpenters, Sergio Mendes, John Marley, Ed Ames, Roger Miller and one of my favorite interviews, Tony Bennett. I still have the tapes somewhere in the vast collection of junk I have a- massed over these years. I then took a job as a DJ and production manager at WAVE Radio, also doing announcing for WAVE-TV and later on, announcing for WLKY-TV. I also have done numerous voice-overs for both radio and TV commer- cials which I continue to do today. My next job was at a Louisville ad agency for 19 years where I became Vice President followed by five years, as Vice President of another a- gency. About 4 years ago, I decided to determine my own fate by opening, along with my wife, my own advertising agency, Adman Mar- keting. I still enjoy the challenges of the agency business. Nearly 35 years ago, I married my Joani. We have two sons, Jeff and Mark, living in Houston and Austin, TX, respectively, and three beautiful grandchildren! My hobbies include playing the keyboards and composing music. I en- joy walking daily and can be found playing on the computer more hours than I should.

After graduation, I went to New York University and obtained an LL.M. degree. I then clerked for Justice Samuel Steinfeld at the Court of Appeals in Frankfort. After my clerk- ship, I worked for a Louisville attorney. In 1976, I started working as an attorney for a State agency in Albany, NY. I retired from that agency in December 2005. Shirley Speier Kaplan (Bob Kaplan) 12913 Chad St., Louisville, KY 40299 502-459-6786 [email protected] (May '13) I have lived a wonderful life as a Mo- ther, Grandmother, Wife, Daughter, and Teacher. So many hats to wear and they all fit just right. I am married to a great guy, have a wonderful daughter and son-in-law, an awesome son and daughter-in-law, and the best (naturally) 31/2 grandchildren. We travel and spend a lot of time with our family. On the professional side, I earned a bachelors degree in education from the University of Kentucky and a Masters degree from the Uni- versity of Louisville. Stefanie Hope Spikell 205 Geary Court, Lincoln, CA 95648 916-253-7431 [email protected] (Jul '08) After putting my hubby and myself through grad school (UK/UL), moved to Bards- town, KY, where I lived for 8 years until my di- vorce. Five years later, moved to Los Angeles, where my family had migrated. Built a career in Big4 consulting and later in marketing communications for major engineering firms. I left the corporate world in 1998 and built my own business. I’m also an artist and spiritual counselor in a metaphysical, non-denominational church. Life has been good and I am in semi-retirement, looking forward to more travel. Los Angeles is a vibrant and exciting community in which to live, but I admit that I miss the slower pace of Louisville—not to mention the lack of horrible traffic there!! I recently went to a U of L alumni get together here in Los Angeles and met President James Ramsey. When he heard I graduated from Seneca in ’63, he said, “Gee, you were there in its heyday! My mother was the math teacher.” Nearly blew me away. Of course we all remember Mrs. Ramsey! One daughter living in Chicago; two grandkids. (Jun '12) Update: I'm in a Del Web 55+ retirement community - the larg- est ever built with 6900 homes and nearly 12,000 people .It's like living in a resort with every imaginable retirement activity and I'm quite happy to be here. I have a brother and sister in Reno, about 1 1/2 hours from here. We are just at the foot of the Sierra Mountains, about halfway be- tween San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Not a bad deal!! I had been in LA for 25 years and while I don't miss the big city at all, I do miss being closer to the ocean. (Jun '13) Update: Well, I’m still loving the lifestyle in my retirement com- munity in northern California, near Sacramento. Besides my sports ac- tivities (walking, pickleball – like tennis – and dance classes), I am a very active fiber and mixed media artist. You can see some of my work at artbystefanie.etsy.com and at facebook.com/artbystefanie. In addi- tion, since I’ve been a writer all my life, I have a blog, livingthoughtfullynow.blogspot.com. It’s so good to stay in touch via our reunion web site and kudos to Harry Jacobson for his dedication to the project! I’ll likely not make it to the 50th, but I’ll surely be there in spirit.

In civilian life I was an engineer for the . Enjoyed many positions in 30 years there but probably none more than the “spare-time” job of operating and maintaining the Louisville Falls Fountain from 1988-1998. Upon retiring from LWC I began a new career as Facility Engineer for Southeast Christian Church, a position I have enjoyed for the last nine years. Gerry and I enjoy boating, golf, and the company of our three grandchildren. We are looking forward to our 40th wedding anniversary.

Patricia Summers Grant (Ed) 7711 Broad Run Rd., Louisville, KY 40291 [email protected] (May '13) After graduating from Seneca, I married my friend & the love of my life (Ed) whom I met in 1960. I was one of those “Stay at home Moms” and took care of all the duties. When the girls were older, I was able to go to Europe and other places on some of Ed’s business trips. It was very nice and I met some wonderful people that became good friends. I worked part-time for awhile, than we opened our own elevator co. We are retired now and have five grandchildren, and also horses on our property. Ed loves to ride and have the grandchildren on the horses too. Oh yes, we’ve married for 50 years in May 2013. The only thing I regret in my life was losing a best friend, Brenda Carroll Riley, in 2009. It was too soon. If I don’t see you all at the 50th reunion I do wish everyone happiness and good health in the future.

Harrell Tague 8305 Salford Way, Louisville, KY 40222 502-425-5254 502-802-1040 (c) [email protected] (Jun '08) Occupation / Career: Founder and owner of RE/MAX Properties East for past 21 years. Founded a mortgage company and title company in 1989. Sold in 2006. Worked for non-food divisions of Kroger Co for 7 years after college. District manager Texas and Florida, Division mana- ger Detroit. Got married and tired of travel so we opened a day care center in Louisville while I transitioned into real estate. Sold the center two years later. Divorced after 7 years and 1 child, Kelly. 3 years later married my pre- sent wonderful wife of 25 years. We also had a daughter, Kati, who is about to graduate from U of L. Our family has been fortunate and traveled a lot over the past decade. Last summer: Italy, Greece, Turkey. This summer: Scandinavia, Ger- many, Russia. The highlights of my business career were being named RE/MAX International Broker/ Owner of the year and GLAR’s REAL- TOR of the year. Love to play golf, but have little time to play much. Enjoy spending time working in yard and garden and enjoy reading. Some of the best years of my life were spent with everyone at Seneca. We were all lucky to have had the teachers, coaches and staff we had at Seneca. They created a great atmosphere for learning, but they also were “Seneca Redskins” and part of the team spirit that made us all part of something very special. No wonder that the Seneca of those days produced so many successes: Diane Sawyer, the Unselds, Don Waddell and Brenda Igo to name just a few. There are many others. I am extremely proud to have been a Seneca Redskin of that era.

So here are 10 surprising inventions from 1963: Continued from page 76 9. Cassette tapes—They would become the dominant medium for music and computer data in the the 1980s but were first introduced in 1963 (they had been invented the previous year by Philips). Rumour has it that the first four cassette recorders arriving in the UK were given to the Beatles. 10. Doctor Who and the Daleks—The BBC television programme Doc- tor Who began on 23rd November, the first episode was delayed due to extended news coverage of the assassination of president Kennedy the day before. The first adventure featuring the Daleks began on 21st December. page 81 Seneca High School Class of '63

(Aug '08) After graduation, I attended Western Ken- tucky University. I was employed at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where I met my hus- band. I managed his medical practice for 26 years. He passed away in 2004. Due to the necessity of medical insurance coverage, at OUR AGE, I am presently working part-time at Floyd Memorial Hospital as Surgical Coordinator. In my spare time I enjoy reading, playing bridge, boating at Rough Ri- ver and traveling. (Jun '13) Not much has changed in last five years. Have had the oppor- tunity to travel some. Oregon, Paris, throughout Italy, Puerto Rico and Grand Cayman. Will be retiring in 2 months. Hope to travel more, but maybe not without a salary. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Gail Tooben Feinberg (Allan) 442 Greenstone Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017 314-542-9652 [email protected] (Jul '08) After graduating from the University of Mis- souri, I returned to Louisville and taught business ed- ucation subjects at Eastern and Seneca. My hus- band of nearly 40 years, Allan and I then settled in St. Louis. We have two children; Jason who is the web manager for the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago; and Shelby who received her PhD in cell and molecular biology, and works with her husband, Dr. Da- vid O'Connor at the University of Wisconsin in his SIV/AIDS research lab. Allan and I have had a retail tabletop and gift store in St. Louis for the past 25 years. We are expecting our first grandchild in September. We certainly have been kept busy.

Jim Vertrees (Rosie) 367 Broadview Lane, Annapolis, MD 21401 410-571-0029 [email protected] (Jun '08) In 1967 I moved to San Francisco. Received a Ph.D. in economics from UC Berkeley, and taught there until I was recruited to reform the way that Med- icare paid for hospital care. The system that I helped develop is still used and has, with my assistance, been copied by al- most all of the countries in Eastern and Western Europe and is rapidly spreading to Asia. One of many nice things about working with people in other countries is you develop friends all around the world. Following my tenure with the US government, I had the privilege of working at Duke University on the development and application of fuzzy logic techniques. I started a com- pany which was acquired by 3M (Scotch tape and Post-It notes)— where I work today. My first wife died in 1996. I have remarried to a lovely woman from Bul- garia and (at this late stage in our lives) have a four year old daughter. We live in Annapolis, MD – on the Chesapeake Bay.

Karen Diane Volz Campbell (George) 917 51st Street, Vienna, WV 26105-3141 304 295-7419 [email protected] After graduating from Seneca I followed my bro- ther (class of 61) to Duke where I majored in Po- litical Science. There I met my husband George Campbell who was studying law. After obtaining a Master of Law degree from the Univ. of Wis- consin George secured an appointment as a law clerk for a judge on the Kentucky Supreme Court and we planned a life as Kentuckians. But as happened to so many of us the Viet Nam war intervened. George was drafted and spent four and a half years in the Army, most of it as a Captain in the JAG Corps serving in the Pentagon. I took advantage of the DC area to earn a Masters Degree from the American University and hoped to have a career as a college professor. (Also while in the DC area we welcomed our son Morgan.) Things went a different direction, however, and rather than George practicing law and me teaching we ended up in his hometown in West Virginia taking over his family's real estate business, comprised mainly of rental townhouses which we built and managed. We just sold the business last year so officially retired-love it. Our daughter Kelly was born in 1978 at the then-named Nortons/ University of Louisville hos- pital. (I came home for the birth because of complications.) Today Morgan is married (to a Kentuckian!) and a partner in a DC area law firm specializing in all things aviation-related and Kelly is a Certified Financial Analyst and Managing Director at BlackRock in Manhattan. We enjoy golf, tennis, mountain hiking, biking and travel, especially visiting the kids for a big city break. Unfortunately our annual summer trip to NYC to attend US Open tennis and FedEx golf conflicts with the reunion. As I look down the list of attendees I am filled with wonderful memories and regret very much not getting to see you all in person. Seneca Forever!

In 1963, a baseball pitcher named Gaylord Perry stated, “They’ll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run.” On July 20, 1969, just a few hours after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, Gaylord Perry hit his first and only home run.

Occu- pation/Career: USAF fighter-pilot turned minister. After graduation, I attended the University of Louisville graduating in 1967 with a degree in English. The same year I married Nancy Smith from Boston, Kentucky and was drafted into the military, serving as an Air Force fighter pilot. I retired as a Colonel after 28 years of service and returned to Louisville to become a minister at Southeast Christian Church. Nancy and I have three children, Don, David, and Dawn and four grand children who live in Tallahassee. My fondest memory of Seneca is an 8- 2 football season our senior year. Since our last reunion, Nancy's health issues (MS, shingles, kidney disease) have limited our activity considerably.

What Happened in 1963?

Under simultaneous and opposing pressures from the Allies and the Soviets, Germany was divided. The Berlin Wall separated West and East Berlin, the latter being under the control of the Soviets. On June 26, 1963, Kennedy visited West Berlin and gave a public speech criti- cizing communism. Kennedy used the construction of the Berlin Wall as an example of the failures of communism: "Freedom has many difficul- ties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in." The speech is known for its famous phrase “Ich bin ein Berliner.” Nearly five-sixths of the population was on the street when Kennedy said the famous phrase. He remarked to aides afterwards: "We'll never have another day like this one." Attribution: National Archive / Getty Images

Leon M. Wahba (Helen) 14006 Oldwood Place, Louisville, KY 40245 (502) 244-8805 [email protected] (Jun '08) I graduated from the University of Louisville in 1967 and joined the U.S. Army. Upon my honorable discharge in August, 1970, I started my banking career with the First National Bank of Louisville. I retired as head of International Dept. of Cleveland based KeyBank in April 2000, only to accept a similar position as head of International for Atlanta based SunTrust. I greatly enjoyed my career which provided me the opportunity to pro- mote international trade with emphasis on financing the export sales of US based clients. I traveled overseas and domestically quite often. I retired for a second (and last!) time from SunTrust in April 2005 and chose to return to Louisville which is my and my wife of 35 years’ hometown. Helen and I have two children, Marcie, 32, and Jeffrey, 27. (Jun '13) I have been very happily retired for 7 years and living the life back in Louisville! We are blessed with good health and a great family. Helen and I are keeping busy with travels and volunteering. She with Gilda's Club and NCJW. Me with Jewish Federation and Delta Upsilon Alumni Association. The Cards have kept us excited and entertained. Retiring and Moving back to Louisville was the right decision. It's a very comfortable, friendly, and compassionate community. I really look forward to our upcoming reunion and take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all those involved in planning and organizing our reunion.

Terry I. Waldman (Glenda) 5317 Pine St., Bellaire, TX 77401 713-432-1654 [email protected] (Jul '13) After graduating from the University of Lou- isville undergrad and medical school, I did an intern- ship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In 1973 I married a native Houstonian, Glenda Danburg. Later that year we moved to Philadelphia for a fellow- ship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I had a Berry Plan deferment which allowed me to spend the next two years at Fort Knox rising to the rank of Major and the title of Chief of Anesthesia and Operating Room Services, Ireland Army Hospital Fort Knox. My aptitude was fine but my attitude, similar to Trapper John’s of the TV show MASH, was not ap- preciated by some of the brass. My son, Seth August, was born at Fort Knox a few weeks before we moved to Kansas City for my first “real job” at Menorah Medical Center. Two years later my daughter, Emily Dawn, was born, and a few months after that we moved back to Houston to be near Glenda’s family. I have been on the active staff of the Methodist Hospital as a partner in Greater Houston Anesthesia for the past 34 years. In January 2013, I stopped working weekends and taking night call. Pseudo retirement. Both my children live within a few miles of my home. My son, a compu- ter consultant, owns his own business. My daughter, a licensed regis- tered dietician specializing in diabetes education is married to Jonathan Lepow and is the mother of our grandson, Benjamin Ethan. I am enjoy- ing watching him grow and being a very proud PopPop. Glenda and I celebrated our fortieth wedding anniversary in April. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, playing golf and bridge, and swimming. I was lucky to be in Louisville when the Cards went from the Elite Eight to the Final Four. Glenda and I celebrated our anniversary on the same day that Louisville won the championship, what a great day! GO CARDS! I am excited to see my friends and be at our 50th reunion…. see you there.

It was there that our first child was born. We later moved to Flint, Michigan then back to Louisville in 1971 when my husband opened his optometry practice After our second child was born, I did the stay-at-home mom thing, at- tending Bellarmine College and U of L part-time and doing volunteer work in my free time. It was my volunteer work with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Project that led to a staff position and even- tually my role as executive director of CASA. I remained with them until retiring in 2004. Now, I do contract work for the National CASA Association, and cur- rently own a jewelry gallery called Sterling Silhouettes. My husband is still in practice. We love spending time with our grandchildren. Reading and traveling anywhere there is water nearby is also a favorite pastime. page 88 Seneca High School Class of '63

(Jun '08) After graduating from college, I taught for a few years in Mayfield, KY and then went to Murray State, where I got my MA in English. I moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1971 and have been here ever since. I have an older home in Richmond, which I have spent a good deal of time renovating. I married, had one son named Neal, and divorced after many years. Neal is a professional musician in New York City, where he plays bass with The Big Apple Circus. He also plays jazz and rock and has two CD's out. I have retired from teaching and spend my time in investment real estate, working out, gardening, working some with the school system, and doing occasional office work for a friend in her orthopedic pediatric surgical practice. I take courses at a local community college. I have a cottage on Lake Gaston on the North Carolina/Virginia border where I relax, boat, fish, and enjoy my friends. I go to NYC pretty often to visit my son, 28, and his wife. Grandchildren can't be far behind. I take a big trip every year. This October I am going to St. Bart's for a birthday party. I would love to hear from friends from Louisville anytime.

Marshall Wood (Lynn) 319 E. 52d St. Savannah, GA 31405 912-238-4694 [email protected]

(Jun '08) I graduated from Vanderbilt University and mar- ried Lynn Gaarden from Kensington, Maryland in 1967. Graduated from Emory University School of Law in At- lanta and moved to Savannah in 1970, to practice law from 1970 to 2001. Began part time teaching at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Sa- vannah in 1996, which led to full time position at Savannah Christian Preparatory School in 2001, teaching a variety of subjects (primarily American government), and coaching girls basketball and now cross country and track. This teaching experience is wonderful! I get more job satisfaction in one day at school than I got in a month during the last years of law practice. Lynn is a school nurse at a Montessori public school in Savannah. She received her BS degree in nursing from Vandy, which is where we met. Lynn and I have two children, Jeff in Seattle, with two granddaughters, and Sarah living in Atlanta. We have been long time members of a Lutheran church in Savannah. We live in mid-town Savannah in the same house for 35 years. School memories: Most memorable teacher for me-Byron Boyer. What a sport! Happy Trig Parties and other reasons for parties, and keeping a "Spartan atmosphere" in the room by keeping the temperature at about 60 degrees! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

John and I like to take short trips at Bed and Breakfasts, read and enjoy our grand kids and family.

Larry Wyman (Bev) 4908 Cooper Chapel Road, Louisville, KY 40229 502-969-3997 [email protected] (Jun '08) I did not attend college like many of my class- mates, when I got out of school I went right to work at Freuhauf Trailer Co. for about 6 months, got laid off, end- ed up working in a gas station until I married Bev Brown from Fern Creek (class of 64) in 1965. I worked my way up from helper to lead man and then became manager of Installation and Service Departments. In 1980 I started my own business of manufacturing Walk-in Coolers & Freezers used in the food service industry. In 2001 I sold the business and retired for a short time. Seneca Alma Mater Dear Seneca, this heartfelt hymn Shall we dedicate to thee; A star whose flame shall never dim, Our beacon ever be. Seneca Forever! All hail the read and gold; Emblem of all noble deeds And glory yet untold. O gracious host we laud the here, With thine anthem swell the air! Thy faithful love and wisdom clear, With us all through life shall fare. May this solemn pledge, then Be proof of loyalty. Seneca, our hearts are thine, And ever more shall be. (Third verse is for Seniors only.) O Seneca, the sun sets fast In our last few hours with thee; We look with sadness on the past, And bold the future see. On the red horizon Burns bright our golden star, Guiding us through all the years, Though we journey wide and far. -Maurice E.
