This book is dedicated to my editor, my best friend, and my bride of almost 39 years,

Sherry Jacobson-Beyer

It is with her help, her support, her love, and her forgiveness for the many late nights and long days I toiled over this labor of love (& the website, too) this book exists.

Seneca High School Class of 1963
50 years and counting!

What a remarkable period of history we have experienced and what wonderful opportunities we have had! Our classmates have travelled all over the world to places we studied in history and geography classes. We have been to Europe, China, South America, Africa and who knows where else? Some of us lived in Europe and one of our classmates, Peachie Schulman, has made her home in Israel.

We have had wonderful careers in teaching, coaching engineering, soldiering, medicine, dentistry, law, business, accounting, banking, real estate, politics, insurance, and graphic design, to mention a few. We have been ministers, presidential aides, forensic scientists, airline pilots, rare book dealers, salesmen and women, homesteaders, therapists, college professors, physicists, builders, computer geeks, financial gurus, civil rights activists, stay-at-home parents, and much more. If there is one fictional character that defines us, it is Forest Gump. He is us, we are him and like him we have been there for the momentous events of our half-century. The years following our graduation were life changing. We suffered through three political assassinations and a war in Vietnam. We marched for the end of racial segregation and equality for all. We cheered when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, when the draft ended, and when the civil rights act of 1964 was signed into law. During our life time the the glass ceiling cracked, the Berlin Wall crumbled, the Soviet Union disintegrated, and apartheid dissolved. We have seen one president resign and another impeached. We have cried as the twin towers fell. Technology, too, has changed our lives. We went from vinyl records and reel to reel tape to 8 track and cassette tapes and from them to CDs and then iPods. We were in awe when we learned we could video tape our afternoon soap operas and watch them after work. We saw JR get shot and the rebirth of Start Trek. We witnessed the emergence of computers and the demise of typewriters. We went from three television channels to hundreds. With the advent of the world wide web the World Book became an anachronism and the USPS will soon follow. We no longer wait for the postman to bring us missives from friends and loved ones but check our email in the middle of the night when we get up to pee. Have a friend in Timbuktu, fire up your computer, iPad, or cell phone, open Skype and give her a call, for free! We are the embodiment of change. As Forest Gump is wont to say “Life is like a box of chocolates.” And we, my friends, have tasted them all. Enjoy the weekend!

(Jun '13) Never having been much of a student, I quit UK in my junior year to move to NYC, where I lived for 39 years. I was a Typographer there for 23 years, then ran my own home-based graphic design/typesetting business.

I finally returned to college at age 50, earning a degree in Corporate Communications, graduating with a 3.97 GPA! It was truly one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life.

I then worked at a private country club in New Jersey as the buyer of the clothes in the golf shop. Not much money, but loads of fun and I was able to play golf at a beautiful course.

Love to travel, most recently to Amalfi Coast, Italy, and Sonoma County, CA. My next trip will be a river cruise from Paris to Normandy in the fall.

Divorced after 27 years of marriage. I now share my home with a wonderful man, a PGA professional, with whom I spend winters in Florida playing golf. In fact I recently bought a house in PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, so will be spending more time there in the future.

I am active in my town home community in Scotch Plains, NJ, and served on the Board of Directors for four years. I currently administer the website for them.

I am starting a new career in real estate, and just passed the NJ state exam in June.

(Jul '08) Marriage, children, and a career in real estate and antiquities came before my move to Miami and return to college in the early '70s.
My continued education was interrupted again by the birth of identical triplet boys in 1979. I attended Florida International University, Miami, FL; UC Berkeley, CA; Melbourne Medical School, Victoria, Australia. After undergrad and a stint of teaching hearing impaired and special needs children I returned to my alma mater’s grad division. Internship and residency in forensic chemistry and anthropology was done at the Dade County Medical Examiner Department where I stayed on (as a forensic anthropologist) after completion of my studies. Miami had been home for more than half my life and it was a big change in mid 2003 to semi-retire to our beach home almost 400 miles to the north. Around this time, my husband, best friend, and long time partner, Thomas Murphy, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away within months. (Aug '13) I have four children and six grandchildren: Carole (Max, the very best son-in-law in the world)—Elizabeth, Ian and Noah; John (Kim, The very best daughter-in-law in the world)—Liam; Christopher and his wife have two beautiful princesses—Christi and Viviana. My son David is not married and has no children. A new career in the Asian Martial Arts Film Industry could be in the future. Recently, I spent six weeks in Cardiac ICU and three more in a skilled nursing facility (rehab). My nephrologist and also my surgeon (the prerequisite second opinion) told me that I had "dodged a bullet." If I can avoid a bullet, then slings, arrows and crouching tigers should be a snap. I'll probably have to watch all the Matrix movies for pointers. I am retired from a job I enjoyed (recovering tissue and organs for transplant and research). I miss working but my life is full. For now, my goal is to regain my strength and stamina. There are still some things on my list that I have to do, but none that I wish I hadn't.

(Jul '13) Seneca High School: Jan 1959 - Jan 63 (when my family moved to the San Francisco Bay

Area). Terra Linda High School, Marin Co, CA, grad 1963. Mills College, Oakland, Ca, 1967 Honours BA in Philosophy, Religion and Sociology I worked as a caseworker for the NYC Department of Social Services 1967-68, then went "back to the land" from Berkeley to Lagunitas to Mendocino, CA. In 1970 I emigrated to Canada with a Vietnam War protestor/draft dodger (with an Art Degree from U of N. Carolina). I cherish those years of learning to live simply, sometimes communally, mostly rural - growing food, making music and crafts, practicing a spirituality in harmony with nature on the beautiful BC coast. And then there were those important learnings from mistakes and failures. In 1982 my life as single mother of 4 began at a Women's Shelter. The Women's Movement, good friends and the Department of Social Services (as a client this time) helped me get on my feet. I went back to school with my children - aged 3 - 15. I received a MDiv degree from the Vancouver School of Theology in 1989, and was ordained to the ministry. From 1989 - 2006 I worked as an Anglican Priest, most of that time in a small parish in New Westminster, BC, where we developed a large outreach program and community gathering place in a low income neighbourhood. In 2000 I married the Rev. Dr. Thomas Harding, a United Church of Canada minister and professor, and sailor. I took early retirement in 2006 and we moved onto our sailboat La Sonrisa II to sail the BC coast. The blog from 2007 - 2012 is www.lasonrisa2.blogspot.ca. And now we live on our "farmlet" on Gabriola Island, just off Vancouver Island. We work at living simply and sustainably, grow our own food and practice cooperative food production, use and learn about alternate energy, share with neighbours, and have a lot of fun. We cherish our 8 children (between us) and 5 grandchildren. And we enjoy living with our our chickens and ducks.

(Jul'13) Fifty years now, Where'd they go?

Fifty years, I don't know
Sit and I wonder sometimes, Where they've gone And sometimes late at night, When I'm bathed in the firelight The moon comes callin' a ghostly white, And I recall, I recall”

As that great Southern Poet, Johnny Winter, said: “I’m still alive and well. I’m Still alive and well. Every now and then its kind of hard to tell, but I’m still alive and well.” After graduation, I attended WKU for a little over two years before joining the Army in 1966. I served three tours in the Republic of Vietnam as a Military Advisor. After returning home I ended up in Clarksville, TN where I attended Austin Peay State University. After receiving my degree I spent the next 25 odd years in the restaurant business. Happily divorced. One daughter, Rebecca Blackburn Moose (31). My passions include music, tennis, working out, reading and Cardinal Sports. R U ready for some football? It has been 25 years since I lost my best friends Jack Daniels and Evan Williams. That’s the reason I’m still alive and well.

(Dec '12) I graduated from Centre College in 1967, Washington University with a graduate degree in Physics in 1969, and served in the Air Force from1969- 1973. After a career in sales, marketing management, finance and services I retired from IBM in 2000. I was a partner in a sales and marketing consulting firm until 2008. I live in Castle Pines, Colorado & Superstition Mountain, Arizona. My wife, Katherine, and I enjoy golf, motorcycle touring on my Harley, and throwing the ball for our doberman pinscher, Gracie. I’m looking forward to seeing my friends at my first Seneca High School reunion this summer. I live in Arizona from January to mid May. My mail is forwarded from Colorado to Arizona at that time.

(Jul '08) I graduated from the University of Memphis (1967) with a BS degree in psychology. A year later I married Jim Daniel four months before he served as 2nd Lt. (Army) on a tour in Vietnam. My early career was as a “stay-at-home mom” for 17 years where I did PTA and church work as well as develop a “love” for the game of tennis. I re-entered the full-time work force when my son, Mark (now 37), entered the School of Architecture at GA Tech. He now owns his own furniture design firm in Chicago (Slatedesign), and is also an in-house designer for Crate & Barrel. My son, Ryan (now 34), was a marketing graduate of UGA and currently is a financial rep for BMW. Jim and I have 3 granddaughters, 1 grandson, and a new grand daughter expected 7/15/08! I am currently the Executive Assistant to the President/CEO of Southern Insurance Underwriters and plan to retire in a few years to join Jim who is semi-retired after many years in industrial sales. We aspire to retire on a lake near the foothills of the North GA Mountains. I have lived in 6 states, love to travel and garden, but playing tennis is my passion! (Jun 30, 2008)

Delivering Outcomes for Communities Training Participant Agenda | Sessions 1, 2 and 3 May-June, 2016

DELIVERING OUTCOMES FOR COMMUNITIES TRAINING PARTICIPANT AGENDA | SESSIONS 1, 2 AND 3 MAY-JUNE, 2016 BACKGROUND President Obama has prioritized improving the way the federal government partners with citizens and local leaders. In 2009, the Administration issued guidance for federal agencies to develop a new and customized approach to working with communities. Today, federal experts increasingly work hand-in-hand with residents and community leaders to create solutions that are responsive to local ideas and concerns. Agencies across the federal government are better coordinated and interact with local government, non-profits, business and other stakeholders as one partner. This work now reaches over 1,800 rural, tribal and urban communities tackling challenges as varied as climate change to entrenched poverty. Using data to inform solutions and evaluate progress, these partnerships have led to new federal staffing models, greater focus and flexibility in federal grant-making and technical assistance—among other innovations—to promote collaboration across agencies and between the federal government and communities. These efforts are having real impact in communities. Mayor Swearengin briefed the White House Press Corps about the impact of this work in Fresno (one of the featured case studies at our training), and in April 2016 NPR’s Morning Edition explored progress made through federal partnerships with communities to help coal-mining communities in Southeastern Kentucky (a Promise Zone and one of the featured panels at this training). When asked why people continue to feel like the government isn’t doing anything for them, Promise Zone Partner Chris Green of Berea College responded, “I think it's because the government is not overt about it.

Although situated in a Southern state, Louisville is influenced by both Southern and Midwestern culture. Once referred to as “The Gateway to the South,” Louisville has its own unique brand of “southerness” and is sometimes referred to as either one of the northernmost Southern cities or as one of the southernmost Northern cities in the United States. Wherever you place it, it is Bourbon City, Derby City and River City all at once. Louisville is many things - original, eclectic, historic, dynamic, and above all…authentic. You could spend a lifetime getting to know our city, the people, the neighborhoods, the culture, and the history that make Louisville truly original.
