The WAP specification provides the basis for a unified worldwide standard-for providing wireless information access from handheld devices-which ensures solutions from multiple providers work consistently for end-users on all networks. General WAP Forum membership was opened in January 1998. By May 1998, 37 companies had united to contribute to the Wireless Application Protocol efforts. In the last four months 23 additional companies have joined the WAP Forum and are introduced subsequently.
