Crossing French, British and European perspectives, the next edition of the Night of Ideas will engage audiences in free debates with the theme Facing Our Time as the common thread to question today’s challenges.

Europe and the environment are major issues facing us today. Too often, however, they are perceived as abstract and remote. CS5-DEC18-JAN19-le-programme-PRINT.indd 14 21/11/2018 17:13 In the run up to the Night of Ideas (31 Jan 2019) and echoing its main strands (Europe Beyond Walls, The Earth Here and Now), this programme will explore citizenship and European identity, as well as the urgency of taking action to preserve this space we share as citizens of the world, the planet Earth.

Among the selection, we’ll be showing L’Auberge espagnole (29 Jan), Cédric Kaplisch’s hugely entertaining comedy about seven European exchange students sharing a flat in Barcelona, who provide each other with mutual support despite their differences.

Social consciousness is at the core of One Nation, One King, an epic drama recounting the events of the 1789 French Revolution from the point of view of ordinary citizens. Its director, Pierre Schoeller, will be attending the screening on 25 January.

Several films and events will tackle environmental issues, from post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller Soylent Green (27 Jan), by Richard Fleischer, to Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent’s documentary, Tomorrow (30 Jan), an investigation into how we might solve the ecological, economic and social crises of today, into what the world of tomorrow might look like. In conjunction with the exhibition Pierre Huyghe: UUmwelt, philosopher Flora Katz, will give us an insight into Pierre Huyghe’s research to “reworld” landscapes, technologies and species, as part of Tomorrow by Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent Serpentine General Ecology project, on 22 January.
