However, not everyone gets a proper way of commemorating those luminaries in their lives. Dr. Jagdish Trivedi‟s rich contribution to the field of literature is indebted to his maternal grandfather Mr. Devshankar Mehta who was an accomplished novelist of his time. To pay him an intellectual tribute, Mr. Jagdish Trivedi does his first PhD on his literary works and becomes „Dr. Jagadish Trivedi‟. Secondly, he decides to explore the life and works of his guru – Shahbuddin Rathod – and writes a thesis on the same, earning his second PhD from Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad. Lastly, the person who has influenced him for spiritual seeking is Morari Bapu. Therefore, he pursued his third PhD from C U Shah University and earned his third PhD on Morari Bapu. Perhaps, he is the only person in the state of Gujarat who has done PhD for three times not to fulfil any academic credentials or qualifications but just to explore the lives and works of people who made a difference in his life. B. One scholar got Ph. D. on the literature of Dr. Jagdish Trivedi Kalpesh Trivedi on “Jagdish Trivedinu Sahityakshetre Pradan: Ek Adhyayan” 2 C. Dr. Jagdish Trivedi has written 58 books Category: Poetry Drama Humour Culture & Compilations Philosophy Number of 6 9 18 4 14 Books: Poetry: As a poet, Dr. Jagdish Trivedi has a knack for inclusive and universal thinking which is why he explores various poetic genres such as songs, poetry, lyrics, ghazals, free verse, parody, so on and so forth. The major themes of his poems come from our cultural 3 ethos and sound philosophical traditions. For instances, he has been mesmerized by the frequent reference of “Rukhad” (an ever roaming monk for the enlightening people) during the spiritual sermons of Shri Morabi Bapu. As a result, he comes out with an exclusive gamut of poems on celebrating the spirit and tradition of Rukhad-monks entitled “Rukhado Zalumbio”. The collection has not only been received by the noted men and women of letters but also a group of well-known poets and critics have written appreciative articles one on each poem. All great thinkers and philosophers have translated one or the other things, be it Swami Vivekananda, Gandhiji or Aurobindo. They translated canonical texts to transmit cultural knowledge. Dr. Jagdish Trivedi too chooses to translate two highly celebrated works. Firstly, he translated “Madhushala” a famous poem of Shri Harivansharai Bachchan into similar Gujarati metrical composition. Secondly, he moved to a profoundly significant text, “Shikshapatri” by Shri Swaminarayan Bhagavan and rendered a beautiful poetic translation of the same. The latter has been sung by Manhar Udhas, a well known 4 Bollywood playback singer and is available for the lovers of poetry and thoughts of Swaminarayan. When a person is creative, he is bound to have mastery over more than one art. So is the case of with Dr. Jagdish Trivedi. As a humourist, he has won hearts of thousands of fan in and outside India. Combination of poetry with humour was the next resultant outcome of the poet turned humourist. Apart from laughing out loudly, people have experienced aesthetic moments of sublimity and cultural awareness. Drama: “Drama has always been my first love,” said Dr. Jagdish Trivedi in one of his interviews. Since his craving for aesthetic expression started very early, he had mastered the art of writing and directing plays. In 1990, his first collection of one-act plays called “Saat Safal Ekankio” got the first prize for the „Best Collection of Plays‟ by Gujarat Sahitya Akademy. His plays have been staged during various events and competitions across the state receiving love and appreciation from the audience and critics alike. 5 The common thread weaving the poems and plays of Dr. Jagdish Trivedi is his deep sense of belonging to a rich cultural heritage. His collections of plays include, “Manasakamp”, “Nava Pancha Natako”, “Satyaghatanatmak Natako”, “Safal Ekoktio”, “Natshunya Ekankio”, “Chalo Ramie Natak Natak”, “Lakshyvedh” (a play in two acts), “Yayati” (a play in two acts), “Pathari Fari Gai” (comedy) to name the best. Interestingly, Dr. Trivedi writes in the introduction of each collection that there is no need to seek the permission of the playwright for performing the plays. Now, here is a person who lives the cultural motto of „sharing the joy‟. „Once on a stage, always on the stage‟ is so appropriate for Dr. Jagdish Trivedi because he had begun his career as a theatre artist in his childhood. Later, the artist found a bigger stage in his college and university days when his expertise grew multifold only to win prizes at the state level. The film is the next likely step for a theatre artist, so he contributed to the making of two significant films namely “Kanku Purayu Ambematana Chowkma”, “Hasyano Varghodo” and a serial named “Kakani Kamal” on Doordarshan in terms of writing scripts, screenplays and dialogues. In all, these films were rooted in the very fabric of Gujarati culture and traditions, which ultimately corresponded with the mosaic of Indian culture. Humour: After leaving the theatre in 1994, he followed the footprints of Shahbuddin Rathod, a veteran humourist and Dr. Jagdish Trivedi, to become a humourist. Along with international performances in 38 countries, Dr. Jagdish Trivedi has penned several books to make people laugh and relieve stress from their lives. 6 These books include, “Ramoojni Railgadi”, “Hasyanu Helicopter”, “Hasyani Hospital”, “Gammatno Guldasto”, Jagdishna Jalasa”, “Jagdishni Jamavat”, “Ramoojni Rangoli”, to name seven of 25. Four of these books have been awarded by Gujarat Sahitya Akademy whereas “Ramoojna Rasgulla” received the “Jyotindra Dave Award” from Gujarat Sahitya Parishad. All good things transcend boundaries and thus, his book “Hasya Shatak” has been translated into Hindi, making people across the country feel the joy shared by Dr. Jagdish Trivedi. Culture and Philosophy: It is really difficult to draw a line of demarcation between poetry and philosophy. Dr. Jagdish Trivedi‟s career that started with drama and twisted into a celebrated humorist had always had this sound analysis of life. Humour turned topsy-turvy is but best philosophy of life. Morari Bapu‟s kathas are always full of ideas pertaining to universal brotherhood, cultural rootedness, and global consciousness. Dr. Jagdish Trivedi has compiled these ideas nicely in his own words and published them in the form of a 7 column. Later, a collection of 100 articles published as a book in two volumes entitled “Manasdarshan-1 & 2”. These articles echo his conviction in the welfare state with people‟s participation into Government-led initiative. A close look at these two volumes brings to forth some of the most original philosophical insights that Dr. Trivedi has derived from the sermons of Morari Bapu. D.
