DeWalt1,*, Kalan Ickes1, and Arlington James2 Abstract - To examine short- and long-term changes in hurricane-prone sub-montane rain forests on Dominica in the Lesser Antilles of the eastern Caribbean, we established 17 per- manent, 0.25-ha vegetation plots clustered in 3 regions of the island—northeast, northwest, and southwest. We counted all trees ≥10 cm diameter almost 30 years after Hurricane David caused substantial tree mortality, primarily in the southern half of the island. We identi- fied 1 vegetation association (Dacryodes–Sloanea) with 2 variants depending on whether Amanoa caribaea was co-dominant. We found that differences in forest structure and spe- cies diversity were explained more by region than forest type, with plots in the southwest generally having higher stem density, lower tree height, and greater species diversity than plots in the northeast or northwest. Our results suggest that differences in forest composi- tion in the sub-montane rain forests of Dominica are largely attributable to the presence or absence of the near-endemic canopy-tree species A. caribaea, and secondarily to the degree of hurricane-caused disturbance. Introduction The Caribbean is considered the third-most important global biodiversity hotspot (Mittermeier et al. 2004, Myers et al. 2000) due to the large number of endemic species, especially plants (Santiago-Valentin and Olmstead 2004), present there. -

Mature fruits were collected from matrix trees located in gallery forests. After, morphological descriptions were performed. Biometric measurement of fruits and seeds were carried out. A total of 650 seeds were randomly separated, with 20% being used for germination and humidity testing on the same day of collection and the others stored for 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. The germination test was performed in a gerbox, conducted in a laboratory chamber of the type B.O.D (biochemical oxygen demand) with a photoperiod of 12h and a temperature of 25 ºC ± 1 ºC. Periodic observations were made to monitor the development of the seedlings until the first germinated seeds reached the full seedling stage. The fruit of R. grandis is a simple, dry, capsule type septifraga, dehiscent and schizocarpic, with average length of 16.24 mm and an average width of 8.57 mm. The seed is an ellipsoid shape, containing a sarcotesta and has an average length of 7.40 mm and an average width of 4.57 mm. R. grandis presents recalcitrant seeds, which emerge in a Phanero-epigene-foliaceous manner. The radicle breaks the integument on the second day after sowing, the collection is evidenced on the 10th day, separating the primary root from the hypocotyl. -

Davis 5 , Jerome Murienne 2 , Roosevelt García-Villacorta 6 , Eric Coissac 7 , Sébastien Lavergne 7 , and Jérôme Chave 2,8 PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The complex geological and climatic history of the Neotropics has had major implications on the diversifi cation of plant lineages. Chrysobalanaceae is a pantropical family of trees and shrubs with 75% of its 531 species found in the Neotropics, and a time-calibrated phylogeny of this family should shed light on the tempo of diversifi cation in the Neotropical fl ora. Previously published phylogenetic hypotheses of this family were poorly supported, and its biogeography remains unclear. METHODS: We assembled the complete plastid genome of 51 Chrysobalanaceae species, and increased taxon sampling by Sanger-sequencing of fi ve plastid regions for an additional 88 species. We generated a time-calibrated tree including all 139 Chrsyobalanaceae species and 23 outgroups. We then conducted an ancestral area reconstruction analysis and estimated diversifi cation rates in the family. KEY RESULTS: The tree generated with the plastid genome alignment was almost fully resolved. It supports the polyphyly of Licania and Hirtella . The family has diversifi ed starting around the Eocene-Oligocene transition. An ancestral area reconstruction confi rms a Paleotropical origin for Chrysobalanaceae with several transoceanic dispersal events. The main Neotropical clade likely resulted from a single migration event from Africa around 28 mya ago, which subsequently underwent rapid diversifi cation. -

Foram encontradas 26 espécies, distribuídas em oito gêneros: Hirtella (oito spp.), Couepia (seis spp.), Leptobalanus e Parinari (três spp. cada), Licania e Moquilea (duas spp. cada) e Chrysobalanus e Microdesmia (uma espécie cada). Hirtella sprucei e Moquilea silvatica são novos registros para a área e, embora a maior parte das espécies tenha ampla distribuição, Couepia impressa, C. pernambucensis, C. rufa, Parinari littoralis, Hirtella sprucei, H. insignis e H. santosii são restritas à Mata Atlântica, sendo as duas últimas consideradas “Em perigo” de extinção. ABSTRACT Integrating Local Knowledge About Plants Into Conservation Practice In Dominica, West Indies by Swetha Peteru Much debate exists about whether scientific and local priorities complement each other or are mutually exclusive, with conservation policies and practices raising questions about whose knowledge counts. In Dominica, West Indies, conservation is highly important because of its large tracts of diverse forest and accordingly its image as the “Nature Island.” This research, conducted near Morne Trois Pitons National Park, adopts a stakeholder approach to compare local views on five trees of global (IUCN red-listed) and three trees of national (Forestry Division) importance in relation to trees local villagers view as important resources for their livelihoods. Results from interviews and transect walks show that residents can recognize trees by pictures or local names. They add to existing knowledge on global-national rare trees and broaden the conservation agenda to recognize 36 native and 19 non-native trees. The study complies a new plant guide that exemplifies how local knowledge and local priorities contribute to scientific understanding of plant conservation.
