Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive Health Sciences Library Memorial University of Newfoundland Dr. Ian Rusted fonds (COLL-001) Title: Dr. Ian Rusted fonds Dates: [1902?]-2000; predominant 1953-2000 Extent: 16.5 m of textual material -- 22 cassette tapes -- ca. 200 slides -- 31 photographs BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Ian Rusted (1921-), physician and 1st Dean of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, was born in Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland on 12 July 1921, son of Reverend Canon Ernest E. and Faith Hollands Rusted. He completed primary and secondary school at St. James’ High School, Carbonear and in St. John’s where he attended Bishop Feild College and Memorial College, graduating with a Pre-Med Diploma in 1940. From there, he attended Trinity College at the University of Toronto and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1943. In 1943, Dr. Rusted began his medical education at Dalhousie University and in 1947-1948, interned at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax after which he was awarded a National Research Council Grant as a Graduate Student in the McGill University Clinic of the Royal Victoria Hospital, leading to his earning a Master of Science from McGill in 1949. On September 8 of the same year, he married Ellen Hansen and on October 1, 1949, he began a Fellowship in Medicine at the Mayo Foundation and Clinic, Minnesota - a position he held until October 1952 when he became the first Newfoundlander to pass the Fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Physicians and return to the province. Upon returning to Newfoundland, Dr. Rusted specialized in Internal Medicine and served as a Consulting Internist to the Department of Health (full-time from 1952-1955 and later, part time until 1967). He also became Director of Medical Education at the General Hospital in St. John’s (1953-1967) where he later became Director of the Memorial University Research Unit (1966- 1974) and Chairman of the Department of Medicine. In addition to this, he also carried out a private practice from 1955 to 1967, and from 1962 to 1964 he created a group practice known as the Medical Consultant’s Group with Dr. P.A. Spurrell and Dr. Hans Epstein, fellow specialists in internal medicine. In 1964, Dr. J.B. Roberts, Dr. D.W. Ingram and Dr. Robert Young joined them. From 1952 to 1967, Dr. Rusted pioneered the development of formal Postgraduate and Continuing Medical Education in Newfoundland. These educational programs received national and international recognition and helped in the careful development of plans, which led to the locating of one of Canada’s four new medical schools at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1967. In 1966, Dr. Rusted became Director of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Coordinator of Planning for the proposed Medical School at Memorial University. In 1967 he was appointed the first Dean and Professor of Medicine at Memorial. Dr. Rusted was appointed Vice-President of Memorial University (Health Sciences) and in 1979 also of Professional Schools. He was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor in 1981. Dr. Rusted served as Chairman of the Medical Education Committee of the Newfoundland Medical Association and as Vice-President of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges. Dr. Rusted, as Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for 1953, held the following appointments for that association: Member of Council, 1964-1970 and Vice-President, 1968- 1970. Dr. Rusted also was Executive Member, 1971-1974 and Vice President, 1973-1974 of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges. In addition, as Fellow and Life Member of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Rusted held the positions of Governor, 1977-1981, Regent, 1982-1988, Vice-Chairman, Board of Regents, 1985-1986, and Chairman, International Medical Activities Subcommittee, 1985-1990. He has also been a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Diabetic Association (Clinical and Scientific Section), the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (Member of Council, 1960-1966), the Newfoundland Medical Association, the American Thyroid Association, the American Endocrine Society, the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the St. John’s Clinical Society. Dr. Rusted is the author of many articles, scientific papers and book chapters including a chapter in Medical Schools at Home and Abroad (Macy Foundation, 1978), in which he gives a detailed account of the development of a Medical School in Newfoundland. He was also a member of the Canadian Armed Forces Active Reserve in the RCAF and was Squadron Leader until 1960. His honours and awards are many, including: Honorary Member, College of Family Physicians in Canada, 1956; Visiting Professor, University of Toronto, 1974-1975; Professor Invite Laval University, 1975; Honorary L.L.D. Dalhousie University, Halifax, 1978; St. John’s Citizen of the Year, 1979; Honorary L.L.D. Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, 1983; Officer of the Order of Canada, 1985 and Honorary D.S.L., Trinity College, University of Toronto, 1993. Dr. Ian Rusted retired from Memorial University in 1989 and was appointed Dean Emeritus. He continues to work out of an office in the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. On September 8, 1949, he married Ellen Hansen and they have two sons, Christopher and Brian. Dr. Rusted and his wife live in St. John’s, Newfoundland. CUSTODIAL HISTORY: Custody of the fonds was held by Dr. Rusted throughout his career with all faculty files being held by Dr. Albert Cox when he became Dean of Medicine. Dr Rusted began donating material he had in storage to the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive at the Health Sciences Library in 1999. The donations of Dr. Rusted continue to arrive at the archive, and the latest acquisition was arranged and described in July 2001. ACQUISITION: The files of Dr. Ian Rusted were kept in his office in the Health Sciences Centre and were transferred to the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive in several deposits of 5-10 boxes at a time. Dr. Rusted supervised the transfer of his files from September 1999 to October 2000. Further textual material was transferred in May 2001. ARRANGEMENT: When the papers of Ian Rusted arrived at the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive, there was some degree of order present. Files were clearly labelled with original titles used in earlier office procedures. An inventory of the collection had been carried out and file lists were attached to as well as inserted in each box. As files were delivered to the archive in small increments, the arrangement was carried out on a box-by-box basis with the work that had been done on the collection previously forming the framework for further arrangement and description of the collection. RESTRICTIONS: There are restrictions on access to or use of certain materials in this fonds. This includes material deemed sensitive. This material will not be available to researchers and will be removed from the box in use before box is retrieved. Requests for any files in Dr. Rusted’s fonds must be made in advance in order that any restricted material be removed before the files are viewed. For information regarding the restriction of specific files please see the archivist. Users should also be aware that copyright regulations state that any copy of archival material is to be used solely for research or private study. Any use of copied materials for any other purpose may require the authorization of the copyright owner. It is the patron’s responsibility to obtain such authorization. Copyright regulations require that records be kept of all copies made of materials deposited prior to September 1, 1999, and that these records may be viewed by the author of the material, the copyright owner, or representatives of either. ACCRUALS: Dr. Rusted is still active in research and other professional activities. It is expected that additional accruals of material will be deposited at the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive in the future.
