In the Zone March 2019 In the Zone March 2019 CEO Update Northern Mystics are pleased to announce four new partners with Hart Sports, Harwood Hall Wines, PIC Insurance and Waitakere Foot. Hart Sport backing of elite level netball in New Zealand will not only benefit professional players but will also add value to community netball. Further details will be announced on the benefits for community netball closer to the start of the netball season. PIC Insurance will be providing insurance for all Northern Zone vehicles and we are grateful to know we are covered as we travel around the Zone in support of community netball. Harwood Hall Wines are excited to support the Northern Mystics through hospitality and entertainment which helps us achieve our fundraising goals. Waitakere Foot have also come on board to support the Mystics with foot and lower limb conditions, not just injuries but all those bruised toenails from tight circle work. NetballSmart The Dynamic Warm-up was delivered at St Mary’s College, where the students were challenged to update their drills and warm-ups to incorporate the movements within the NetballSmart Warm-up. They demonstrated excellent creativity and confidence as leaders. A mass warmup was delivered to teams attending the College Rifles Club Day. The teams played a Fast Five tournament with a focus on preparing the body and better understanding of netball movements. Ten Intermediate school coaches from Whangarei attended the AIMS Netball Smart Workshop at Whangarei Netball Centre focusing on the Power Warm Up, Tournament preparation, Safe Jumping and Landing techniques and incorporating into training. Waiuku Netball Centre Open Day On 16th February, the Northern Mystics and Zone Community Team spent a wonderful morning with Waiuku Netball Centre showcasing the Mother Earth FutureFERNS programme and the modified netball games as part of their Open Day. It was a great day to experience different parts of the junior netball programme and we had a number of new to netball participants. Everyone had a fantastic time developing their skills and playing the modified games. The Mystics players really enjoyed getting to interact with the Waiuku players and were really impressed with their skills. Best wishes for the season. Coaching for Success Workshop 30 coaches from the far north and deep south of our zone came together at Netball Waitakere for the “Coaching for Success” workshop on Sunday 31st March. Deb Fuller (Silver Ferns assistant coach), Charissa Barham (NZSS Coach), Nic Kelly (P.E. expert) and Sharon Kearney (former Silver Ferns physio) shared their expert knowledge and love of the sport with our enthusiastic coaches. We also had 12 coaches achieve their Community Coach Award Level 1 (CCA1) and were thrilled to have Noeline Taurua presenting their awards. Noeline surprised us by attending the morning and everyone could feel her mana and wished her and Deb good luck for the World Cup in July. Thank you to Netball Waitakere for hosting us for a wonderful day and to our coaches, thank you for your energy and knowledge shared. Netball Leaders at Botany Downs Secondary College Netball Northern Zone in collaboration with Auckland Netball Centre delivered the Netball Leaders course to 21 students from Botany Downs Secondary College. The two day leadership course provided deep learning about leadership and how the students can influence and give back to netball. It was impressive to see the students learn more about themselves, develop their confidence and take ownership of their netball experience. Through the course, the students provided a Youth Voice and are advocating for netball at their school. All students are committed to giving back to netball through Youth Voice, coaching or umpiring. Coaching partnership with Unitec Our NetballSmart and Coaching team were warmly welcomed at UNITEC for another year to explore netball coaching workshops. The first-year students participated in the NetballSmart warm-up, the art of questioning, the junior netball philosophy and implementing the new tools into coaching an activity to the wider group. On the final day the students tried the 6 v 6 game. The UNITEC students are now visiting local primary schools to put their new skills into practice. Thank you to Rob and Ange from UNITEC for facilitating the knowledge sharing with your enthusiastic students. Children’s Fun Day at Netball Rodney A Children’s Fun Day was held at Centennial Park delivered by the Wellsford Districts Sport and Recreation Collective. Community groups, provided activity stations around Centennial Park for children to try different sports. Netball Northern Zone supported Netball Rodney in delivering netball stations for all ages and stages. Buckets for the babies, varying goals for children 3 years and up. The theme for the day was “Everyone have a go”. Thanks to our Funders Junior Coordinator Workshop by Anne Nicholson, Auckland Netball Centre Junior Co-ordinators are vital to the success of the Mother Earth futureFERNS Programme. The Zone recently held a cluster Junior Coordinator Workshop as a fantastic initiative to share and learn. The networking and sharing between the ladies from Waiuku, Pukekohe, Pohutakawa Coast - HPNC satellite, Papakura, Manurewa, Mangere Otahuhu and Auckland netball centres was invaluable. For Junior Coordinators to know they are not alone, and there is shared time, effort and energy invested into our young players is humbling. There was a strong sense of shared capability building to address the local challenges in delivering the junior netball programme. The Junior Coordinators are a special group of people who week in and week out are charged with delivering quality netball experiences for our young players and their families. This is a huge investment for the future of our sport. As Wayne Goldsmith outlines the only kid who can’t improve is the one who is not there. The value of the Mother Earth futureFERNS programmes and especially the Junior Co- ordinators on game day really do make a difference to the fun and learning that happens with our young players. We are pleased to present the 2019 Annual Report to you. The 2019 year was as always, a busy and productive year in the Northern Zone. As you are aware it was a challenging year financially, but from an operational perspective we were able to continue our delivery in partnership with our 17 Centres largely without interruption, along with delivery of the Marvels and Mystics programmes. Finances We signaled to all Centres that the Zone was working in extremely challenged circumstances through the year. This was largely the result of not having a naming rights sponsor in place for the Mystics, and a lower level of successful applications for community funding in the early part of the year. After a massive effort from the Zone management team and Board, the result was a $17k surplus. This was achieved through the delivery of two fundraising events by the Board, disciplined application to community funders, and cost reduction through the generosity of staff members in taking reduced hours, and we thank Tia Winikerei and Chris Tennant for their willingness to make that sacrifice. We were also able to save the cost of the CEO role for 3.5 months and received a contribution from Netball New Zealand towards our development programme.
