Division Ii Men's Swimming and Diving DIVISION II MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2017 Championship 2 History 8 Championships Records 10 Individual Champions 11 All-Time Team Results 25 2017 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Queens (NC) men claim third straight team title: Queens (North Carolina) rolled to its third straight team title Saturday during the final day of the Division II Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day meet was conducted as part of the 10th Division II National Championships Festival at the Birmingham Crossplex. Team champions also were crowned on Saturday in Division II women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and wrestling. The Royals compiled 563.5 points to distance themselves from second-place Drury in the team standings. Nova Southeastern was third, followed by Florida Southern and Grand Valley State. The Royals won 12 of the meet’s 21 events, including four of the five relays. The Royals, in fact, garnered 184 of their points from the five relay events. Marius Kusch and Paul Pijulet each won their third events of the meet on Saturday, Kusch in the 100-yard freestyle and Pijulet in the 200-yard backstroke. Drury had won the team title for 10 straight years from 2005-2014 and for 12 of the 16 years from 1999-2014. Joan Casanovas was a double winner this year for the Panthers, winning the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday after having claimed the 500 free on Friday. Casanovas outdueled junior Franco Lupoli of Nova Southeastern in the 1,650. The two battled neck and neck for most of the race until Casanovas pulled away in the final 50 yards. Other notable accomplishments on Saturday included Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern winning his third straight 200-yard breaststroke. Lobanov, who won the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday, posted a time of 1:51.83, just shy of the record 1:51.71 he swam in 2015. 2017 TEAM STANDINGS 19. UC San Diego 94½ 20. Bridgeport 89 21.     Swimming and Diving DIVISION II MEN’S Highlights Drury wins 10th consecutive men’s title: It is now, officially, a decade of dominance. Drury won its record 10th consecutive men’s NCAA Division II national title as the Panthers squad walked away with top honors as the national swimming and diving cham- pionships came to a close on Saturday night at the Spire Institute. The DU men were untouched yet again, compiling 569.5 points to 361 for runner-up Florida Southern. Wayne State (Mich.) finished third at 358.5, followed by Queens (N.C.) (285) and Bridgeport (258.5) to round out the top five. The men’s meet appeared over, for all intents and purposes, by no later than the end of the second day, when the Panthers were already up by triple digits. It marks the 12th men’s title since Drury made the move to the NCAA-II level in 1994-95. Counting their NAIA days, it’s the 21st men’s national championship, with all but one of those coming under the magnificent, 31-year reign of head coach Brian Reynolds. And each one, Reynolds says, feels just as important and satisfying as those of the past. “They all are special,” he said. “The only thing that gets old is the level of stress I have to endure as I get older. My body can’t seem to cope with it as well as it used to.” And, just as it seemingly happens every year, Drury had past stars uphold and enhance their reputations on their way out as seniors and new faces emerge as Panthers to watch in the coming years.

    96 DIVISION I Swimming and Diving DIVISION I 2002 Championships Highlights Texas Hooks Up Swimming Title: The Texas Longhorns pulled out their third consecutive championship in dramatic fashion, coming back to take the lead in the second-to-last event of the meet and holding on for the victory. The Longhorns finished with 512 points, 11 more than the Stanford Cardinal. That margin of victory is the closest since the advent of the 16-place scoring system in 1985. Divers made the difference for the Longhorns. Troy Dumais was named diver of the meet for the third straight time after sweeping the spring- board events and taking fifth on platform.     Swimming and Diving DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights California cruises to fi rst title in 31 years; Team clinches title by winning 400-yard freestyle relay: The California men’s swimming team, powered by titles by senior Nathan Adrian and a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay during the fi nal day of the meet, earned its third national championship by winning the 2011 NCAA Men’s Swim- ming and Diving Championships March 24-26 at Minnesota. The Golden Bears, led by fourth-year coach David Durden, won their fi rst NCAA team title in men’s swimming since capturing back-to-back titles under Nort Thornton in 1979-80. In a dramatic conclusion to its national title run, Cal’s 400 free relay team of senior Graeme Moore, senior Josh Daniels, sophomore Tom Shields and Adrian won the meet’s fi nal event with a time of 2:47.39 to give the Bears a 493 to 470½ point victory over Texas in the team standings. Stanford placed third in the meet with 403 points. Texas won two events, but couldn’t fully overcome a 63½ -point defi cit at the start of the fi nal day to win the team title. Earlier on the fi nal day, Adrian won his second title of the NCAA meet by capturing the 100-yard freestyle for the third straight year, recording a time of 41.10. He is the third Cal athlete to win the national title in the 100 free three years in a row, joining Olympic gold medalists Matt Biondi (1985-87) and Anthony Ervin (2000-02).

MORE OLYMPIC UPSETS (listed by year) 1932 Helene Madison (USA) whips Willi den Ouden (NED) in the 100 free. 1936 Dark horse Ferenc Csik of Hungary upsets the USA's Peter Fick to win the 100 freestyle. 1948 Walter Ris (USA) takes the 100 free, as pre-Games favorite and WR-holder Alex Jarny sinks to a tie for fourth. 1952 South Africa’s Joan Harrison, 15, knocks three seconds off her 100 meter back to surprise WR-holder Gjertje Willema (NED). 1956 A rapidly-fading Murray Rose (AUS) hangs on to win the 1500 over Tsuyoshi Yamanaka, as WR-holder George Breen (USA) is third. 1968 Doug Russell (USA) beats Mark Spitz (USA) in the 100 fly for the only time in his career. 1968 Michael Wenden (AUS) upsets WR-holder Don Schollander in the 200 free. 1968 Kaye Hall (USA) sets the only women’s WR at Mexico City, winning the 100 back from WR-holder Elaine Tanner of Canada. 1972 In her first freestyle loss in two years, Australia’s Shane Gould falls in the 100 free to the USA’s Sandy Neilson and Shirley Babashoff. 1976 The USA’s Brian Goodell and Bobby Hackett nip Australia’s Steve Holland, the WR-holder, in a 1500-meter thriller.

The Longhorns tie Michigan for No. 1 all-time with 12 NCAA titles, and 38th-year Texas head coach Eddie Reese passes former Ohio State coach Mike Peppe as the most decorated coach in the sport’s history with 12 NCAA team titles. Texas won the NCAA Championships with 541.5 points while California took second with 351 points. Florida took third place with 334 points while North Carolina State placed fourth at 314. Georgia rounded out the top-five with 239.5 points. Schooling tied with California’s Ryan Murphy and Florida’s Caeleb Dressel for the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America Swimmer of the Meet honor. Reese also collected his second straight CSCAA National Coach of the Meet Award Licon rewrote the NCAA, American, U.S. Open and NCAA Championship records in the 200 breaststroke and claimed his second consecutive national title in the event at 1:48.12, well under the previous mark of 1:48.66 by Arizona’s Kevin Cordes at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Licon faced off against California’s Josh Prenot for the third time in as many days after splitting the first two races with the Golden Bear.
