Upon his arrival in College Park in 1993, Sasho Cirovski has transformed Maryland into a national soccer power, leading the Terps to the 2008 and 2005 NCAA title, six College Cup appearances, and three ACC titles, all the while producing numerous top-level professional players. After 16 seasons at Maryland, the 2005 NSCAA National Coach of the Year has instilled his passion for excellence in a soccer program that expects to compete for the national Team Accomplishments title every season. • 2005, 2008 NCAA Champions During his tenure with the Terps, Maryland has been to the NCAA Tournament 14 times, advancing to the Final Four in six of those years, including • 14 NCAA postseason appearances with four-straight appearances from 2002-05, culminating in the NCAA title in 2005. Maryland is the only team in the nation that can claim that feat. The Terps advanced to the third round of the championship and was the only squad to do so every year for the past six seasons. Player Accomplishments

Despite losing six student-athletes from the national championship team in 2005, Cirovski led the Terps back to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, • MAC winner marking the sixth-straight season that Maryland advanced to the postseason. The Terps advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and finished the season (2005) with a 16-5-1 record. • Two No. 1 picks in the MLS collegiate draft (, 1998 and Maurice Edu, 2006) The 2005 championship run did not mark the arrival of the Maryland program, but helped validate its place alongside the nation’s elite. In addition to • 35 MLS players a fourth-straight College Cup appearance, the Terps won the ACC regular season title and posted a 19-4-2 mark. In addition, Cirovski helped mentor • Four ACC Players of the Year (Leo Cullen, 1997; Maryland’s first Hermann Trophy winner in Jason Garey, who left Maryland as the school’s all-time leader in goals (60) and points (140) and was the Jason Garrey, 2005; Chris Seitz, 2006; Omar third pick in the MLS SuperDraft. As chairman, Cirovski was the architect in creating the position of NSCAA Program Director, a major triumph for the sport. This position will be the singular voice of college soccer in dealing with NCAA legislative issues, overseeing College Cups and elevating the significance and status of the sport. He was also vital in brokering the television partnership between Fox Soccer Channel and the NSCAA, guaranteeing a weekly spot for college soccer on television.

Cirovski has brought success to every program he has been a part of. After helping his alma mater, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade as an assistant coach under Bob Gansler, he assumed the top spot at Hartford in 1991. In his two seasons with the Hawks, he took the team to back-to-back 13-6-3 records and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history. He then came to Maryland in 1993 to help resurrect a once-proud program that had been to only one NCAA Tournament in the last 16 years.

In addition to the accomplishments of his 17-year coaching career with the Terps, Cirovski was also a standout student-athlete himself. He began his career at Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he was a four- year letterwinner. As a senior, he won the Herman Kluge Award for Male Athlete of the Year, and, in 1998, he was inducted into the UWM Athletic Hall of Fame. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1985 and his master’s in 1989. He then spent parts of three seasons as a professional player and coach with the teams in the Canadian Soccer League, and the National Professional Soccer League. His first taste of coaching came in 1987 in the Canadian Soccer League.

Cirovski is entering his 19th year of coaching overall, and holds an “A” coaching license from the U.S. Soccer Federation, as well as an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. During the summer of 1997, he served as the assistant coach of the JVC U-17 World Youth Championship team, which played against Argentina, Uruguay, Egypt and two domestic camps. The team competed at the U-17 World Cup Championship in Egypt held in September of 1997. Cirovski also worked as an assistant coach for the U.S. U-20 National Team.

Cirovski’s wife, the former Shannon Higgins, played collegiate soccer at North Carolina and entered the National Soccer Hall of Fame in the fall of 2002. The couple has three daughters, 14-year-old Hailey, Karli, who turned 12 in August, and Ellie, who turned six on July 15. Pronunciation Guide

Maryland 0, UCLA 2 Despite a Ludwig Field record crowd of 6,718, the No. 1/8 Maryland men’s soccer team saw its 16-game winning streak snapped Friday night after two late goals by UCLA sparked the Bruins to a 2-0 win in the Terps’ season opener.

No. 19/9 UCLA picked up scores in the 77th and 82nd minutes, while shutting Maryland out for the first time since August 31, 2008, when the Terps fell, 1-0, to California in Los Angeles. That was also the only other blemish on Terp starting goalie sophomore Zac MacMath’s record until Friday night.

Maryland controlled the entirety of the first half and the majority of the second. The Terps outshot UCLA, 13-3, in the first period and 19-7 for the match.

Matt Kassel registered the first shot of the year when his free kick sailed just high of the post over a leaping UCLA keeper Brian Perk in the game’s opening minutes. Doug Rodkey followed that with a floating kick of his own that also went high of the goal. Maryland continued to fire at the Bruins and got its closest shot at a lead when Jason Herrick’s header off a perfectly- placed corner from Matt Kassel went just wide of the goal. Six minutes later, freshman defender Taylor Kemp advanced on the far sideline and launched a long drive at Perk that missed to the right.

UCLA picked up its first shot of the game when Michael Stephens broke loose from the backline but MacMath made a tremendous sliding save to keep the Bruins scoreless.

Ethan White, who joined Kemp as freshman starters in the Terps’ refurbished backline, tallied his first shot in the Red and Black in the 27th minute. His header, which was set up by another solid Kassel serve, went wide of the post. The Terps had a bang-bang scoring opportunity two minutes later when Rodkey’s header was stopped by a Bruin defender inches outside the goal line and rebounded to Kevin Tangney, whose solid strike nearly gave Maryland its first score.

Kassel provided Maryland with another quality scoring chance when his long serve from the midfield found a streaking John Stertzer on the far sideline with three minutes left in the half. Stertzer, one of four Terrapin freshmen to see their first playing time Friday, got a good look at goal but his shot also went just high over Perk.

Herrick opened the second stanza with a turnaround shot at goal, but his close-range strike went directly at Perk. With 17 minutes remaining in the contest, Yates passed a nice ball through to Casey Townsend but the sophomore’s attempted tap-in was unsuccessful.

The Bruins picked up the game-winner with 13 minutes remaining after a Stephens corner kick caused a scramble at the box that was batted out by MacMath, but the ensuing header from Sean Alvarado passed a goal line stance attempt by Kaoru Forbess. UCLA followed with another score five minutes later when Ryan Hollingshead benefited from a rebounded save from MacMath.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that we left points on the table and that we were the better side today,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “The fans really made my night though. The atmosphere in here tonight was just amazing and I think they all know how much I appreciate them.”

Maryland will quickly switch its focus to another Pac-10 foe as it battles California at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Ludwig Field.
