Many objects in collections are ones we handled in our childhood at our grandparents' house and may be complacent about what risks they poise to our health. The goal is to raise awareness and inspire dialog among museum professionals that they need to be wary of the inherent dangers many benign looking artifacts may contain. Online Jillian exhibits can help promote your collections to users of all ages. Are you worried you do not have the technical skills to create an online exhibit? This session will explore low tech options for creating online exhibits that will tell the story of your collections. Participants will gain practical advice for creating online exhibits from choosing items from your collections to evaluating options for putting your exhibits online from free website publishing platforms to paid online exhibit hosting services. Participants will also learn about tools, applications, and plug ins available for enhancing online exhibits. How do I write a grant for my historical society (and what do I need to have ready as I start)? What are best practices for donor cultivation and – after they’ve given – for donor stewardship? Learning just a few of the tools available in Photoshop can really add flair to printed materials. Participants will get a primer on general design concepts and printing standards; learn how to combine photos, text, layers, masks, and effects; find out the different options for getting the software; and take home a list of several online resources that can help further your skills. Leann Rich, Education & External Relations Manager for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society is a self taught daily user of Photoshop and InDesign. 4 Simple Custom Enclosures for Cultural Heritage Collections Miriam Nelson Head of Preservation Ohio University Interested in learning how to construct basic enclosures to preserve your Jillian Workshop (SOA) (Double Session) valuable collections? In this session participants will learn how to build two custom enclosures, the Tyvek envelope and the 4 flap box. Session participants will be shown how to create each enclosure from start to finish and will be given pre-cut samples on which to practice. A good fit can play as large a role in preservation as the quality of materials we use and these custom enclosures can be produced with minimal equipment and time. Limited to 20 participants. Alan Canfora was a leader of the 1970 Kent State students' anti-war revolt, an eyewitness and casualty of the shooting incident and the acknowledged leading expert about the Kent State tragedy of May 4, 1970. Bring photographs of artifact to be identified - or the artifact itself (at your own risk). Even if your object stumps the panel, panelists will still be able to offer advice on how to examine or "read" an artifact so you can continue your quest to find out what it is.
