PRESENTATION HOUSE GALLERY DREAM LOCATION DREAM LOCATION WALKER EVANS RUNA ISLAM ERNST LUDWIG KIRCHNER ELAD LASSRY SIGMAR POLKE GERHARD RICHTER CURATED BY STEPHEN WADDELL JANUARY 25 TO MARCH 9, 2014 Dream Location begins with the photo essay Unposed Portrait, an editorial oddity published amidst the adver- tisements for perfume, Dior and Bergdorf Goodman in a 1962 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. The essay comprises a series of black and white portraits of New York City subway riders by the photographer Walker Evans, along with the following text: The crashing non-euphoria of New York subway life may someday be recorded by a modern Dickens or Daumier. The setting is a sociological gold mine awaiting a major artist. Meanwhile, it can be the dream ‘location’ for any portrait photographer weary of the studio and the horrors of vanity. With Unposed Portrait, Evans sought to subvert the af- firmative demands typically made of photography, and consider the ways in which experience and its depiction have motivated artists. His subway pictures—taken between 1938 and 1941 in the close, uncontrollable setting of the metro—developed into a provisional, unfinished series of works that provided him a new way of thinking about portraiture and the documentary im- pulse, as well as a ‘dream location’ for experimentation. Published 20 years later in the context of Harper’s, these works appear as a surreptitious intervention within the commercial confines of the magazine, standing in sharp contrast to the kind of editorial aesthetic that Evans himself helped make recognizable decades earlier. These photographs reveal a rupture in how pictures are made and encountered that was unimaginable to audiences at the time. -

I feel very much that a tree is a relative, a cousin. Everything in this world, I find, I’m related to.’ – Luchita Hurtado, 2018 New York... For more than seventy years, Los Angeles-based artist Luchita Hurtado has merged abstraction and representation with mystical effect, exploring connections between the body and its larger context – nature, the environment, and the cosmos – in an effort to express universality and transcendence. ‘Dark Years,’ Hurtado’s first solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth, focuses on the artist’s early works from the 1940s to the 1950s, a period defined by prolific experimentation. Comprising of crayon and ink paintings on board and paper, graphite and ink drawings, and oil paintings on canvas, the works on view range stylistically from surrealist figuration and geometric patterning to biomorphic forms executed with expressive acuity. Together, they underscore the vast scope of Hurtado’s early expression and illuminate the origins of an artistic output that would continue to evolve for decades to come. Hurtado’s multicultural life and career reflect in the eclectic mediums and formal techniques of her oeuvre. Born in Maiquetia, Vargas, Venezuela in 1920, she emigrated to the United States in 1928, settling in New York where she attended classes at the Art Students League. -

There is little in the world that David Kordansky enjoys more than talking about art. According to the art- ists he represents and the collectors to whom he sells, this is his gift. The artist Rashid Johnson, whom Kor- dansky has represented since 2009, said he can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times he and Kordansky have spoken about sales. There is no doubt that Kordansky, who is 37, can sell art like few other dealers, but he prefers to leave the closing of the deal to his staff. The venality of the current art business dismays him. Even in the 11 years since he opened his first gallery in L.A.’s Chinatown, the market has become bloated beyond recognition, he said, especially in the auction houses of New York and London. “I believe in art much more than I believe in the art world,” he told me last summer in the kitchen of his home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, the artist Mindy Shapero, and their two young children. -

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions 6522 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90028 www.welcometolace.org PRESS RELEASE LA25 Half-Life October 8 –November 16, 2008 Opening reception: October 15, 6-8 p.m. LACE is proud to present LA25 Half-Life, new work from 25 emerging Los Angeles artists selected for inclusion in an innovative project sponsored by the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP to support the city's vibrant artists' community. The LACE exhibition will be curated by Thomas Solomon and feature work ranging from photography, sculpture, painting and drawing to mixed media. The LA25 artists, who were selected by a jury of art professionals, are Marya Alford, Patterson Beckwith, Lindsay Brant, Cal Crawford, Marie Jager, Andres Janacua, Matthew Jordan, Vishal Jugdeo, Annie Lapin, Elad Lassry, Christopher Michlig, Yaniro Paramo, José Álvaro Perdices, Ephraim Puusemp, Marco Rios, Jeff Sheng, Natalie Shriver, John Sisley, Jim Skuldt, Carly Steward, Whitney Stolich, Lee Thompson, Greg Wilken, Rosha Yaghmai and Brenna Youngblood. LA25 was born out of a unique vision to support the area's arts community while also celebrating Skadden’s 25 years in Los Angeles. Over the course of three years, LA25 has presented the work of artists working in various media who, at the time of selection, had not had previous commercial gallery representation. The artists were selected from some of the most renowned art schools in the Los Angeles area: Art Center College of Design, CalArts, Claremont Graduate University, Otis College of Art and Design, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside and USC. LA25 chief curator Thomas Solomon visited myriad studios to provide the jury with a pool of artists from which they selected the final group. -

do it (home) do it (home) Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist As social distancing requirements remain necessary, and many around the world are experiencing renewed calls to stay home, ICI and Hans Ulrich Obrist are expanding do it (home) with a new version of the project that features 54 artists’ instructions. These include new commissions as well as recent contributions from do it (around the world) at the Serpentine Galleries and do it (australia), produced by Kaldor Art Projects. Explore this additional collection of do it (home) instructions that will take you away from your screens, and recreate an art experience at home. You will respond to the artists’ call, follow their lead, enter their world, and realize an artwork on their behalf. When you’re ready to return to the screen, share that you did it! Make connections with other doers on Instagram, #doithome do it (home) was first conceived by Obrist and produced by ICI in 1995, as a collection of do it instructions that could easily be realized in one’s own home. In Spring 2020, in response to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new version of do it (home) was launched and shared through more than 50 collaborating art spaces from within ICI’s international network. In 1993, Obrist together with artists Christian Boltanksi and Bertrand Lavier, conceived do it, an exhibition based entirely on artists’ instructions, which could be followed to create temporary art works for the duration of a show. do it has challenged traditional exhibition formats, questioned authorship, and championed art’s ability to exist beyond a single gallery space.
