Galileo Top Apex Sire Again THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 2015 JANUARY SALE MARCHES ON GALILEO TOP by Jessica Martini APEX SIRE AGAIN The Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale marched into Book 2 Wednesday in Lexington with a slow-starting session which gained momentum throughout the day. Bloodstock agent Mike Ryan made the highest bid on the day, going to $240,000 to acquire the Sam-Son Farm-bred Ready for Romance (More Than Ready) (hip 917) on behalf of Fifth Avenue Bloodstock. Ryan was bidding for the same client when he purchased the mare Veracity (Distorted Humor) for $460,000 Tuesday. Ready for Romance was one of two horses to top the six-figure mark Wednesday. At the third session of last year’s January sale, four horses sold for six figures, with a colt by Into Mischief bringing the top price of $150,000. So the enormity of the achievement by Coolmore’s flagship sire, Galileo, in scoring the highest A Runner Index (4.09) for a North American or European sire with 200+ year-starters, and for the second year running, cannot be overstated. With 1,945 year-starters in the seven-year period 2009-2015, he is second in that category only to fellow Coolmore sire Giant’s Causeway, who has 2,143 year-starters in that period--over 300 a year. Three sires--Galileo (4.09), Spendthrift’s Into Mischief (4.07), and Claiborne’s War Front (3.89)--broke away from the pack among 448 North American and European sires which had 200 or more year-starters in the seven-year period 2009-2015. Yes, I said Into Mischief. With just 140 foals in his first four crops he had five A Runners last year, three of them GSW. He has about as many 2-year-olds of 2016 as in his first four crops combined, so it will be a big challenge for him to sustain these figures, but if he’s anywhere close as his crops size quadruple he’ll be even bigger news. From 2007-2012 there were between 1,043--1,156 sires which stood in North America, Europe, or Japan which qualified for ratings. No doubt as a result of the World Financial Crash of 2008, combined with a contraction in the number of sires and further concentration on sires with bigger books, the number of APEX sires fell to exactly 1,000 in 2013, and has fallen a further 18%, to just 820 APEX sires in 2015 (key criterion: 10+ 3-year-olds of 2012); that’s a total drop of almost 30% in the number of APEX sires since 2007. Of the 820 qualifying APEX sires, just 448 North American and European sires had 200 or more year-starters (a horse is counted as one year-starter each year it starts, up to seven) in 2009-2015. Of those 448, a total of 51 sires (11%) finished 2015 with A Runner Index ratings of 2.00 or higher, of which 10 scored 3.00 or higher. An A Runner Index of 4.00 equals 8.00% A Runners from year-starters; 3.00 equals 6.00% A Runners/year-starters; and 2.00 equals 4.00% A Runners/year-starters. Of the 10, two died in 2012, Monsun (3.50) and Dynaformer (3.03). Of the eight active sires with 200+ year-starters 2009-2015 and 3.00+ A Runner indexes, five stand in Kentucky; the number one sire, Galileo, is of course based in Ireland; and two, Darley’s Dubawi (3.16) and Juddmonte’s Dansili (3.07), stand in England. Golden Horn, Gleneagles Slated to Finally Meet in Irish Champion The much anticipated matchup between star European miler GLENEAGLES (IRE) and fellow standout GOLDEN HORN (GB) appears set to finally take place Saturday in Leopardstown’s $1.33 million “Win and You’re In” QIPCO Irish Champion (GI), with an eight-horse field in place, and a berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf going to the winner. The Irish Champion is one of three Challenge races at Leopardstown and highlights a weekend that features 10 total “Win and You’re In” races, including the prestigious Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) Sunday. A rainy forecast for Friday has caused Leopardstown officials to move the Irish Champion to the outside course, and to start Saturday’s race about one hour earlier in the program. The connections of both Coolmore’s Gleneagles and Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn, the pair of 3-year-old standouts are expected to meet in the 1 ¼-mile race after the latter withdrew from a potential clash in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York August 19 due to the soft turf.

  • FRANKEL – a Freak of Nature Or Man-Made Success Story?
FRANKEL – a freak of nature or man-made success story? Why was Frankel such a successful racehorse? A truly unique specimen or an extremely talented individual produced, trained and campaigned perfectly (to hide all imperfection)? And will he enjoy the same amount of success as a breeding stallion? Looking into his pedigree, there is no doubt that he is produced from the crem de la crem of thoroughbred bloodlines. By the great sire, Galileo; who himself was a brilliant racehorse as a winner of the Epsom Derby in 2001. Out of Kind by Danehill. Kind was also successful on a number of occasions over six furlongs. Frankel is line bred in the 3rd and 4th generation to Northern Dancer, a persistent winner in the USA, including of the Kentucky Derby. However, good bloodlines do not necessarily mean a good horse. There are many more ingredients needed to make a horse successful. Namely soundness, attitude, and experienced training, plus lady luck being on your side! Looking at pictures of Northern Dancer, Frankel is of a similar stamp and possesses a number of his traits. In the thoroughbred breeding world, horses are line bred (a form of controlled in-breeding) in order to enhance the wanted traits of a particular bloodline, such as speed or stamina. By adding more of the same blood, you are more likely to achieve a similar animal, so the theory goes. However, you may not achieve the wanted traits, and in fact get unwanted traits such as wind unsoundness or conformational defects. As far as we know, Frankel does not have any unsoundness issues.
