JANUARY SALE MARCHES ON GALILEO TOP by Jessica Martini APEX SIRE AGAIN The Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale marched into Book 2 Wednesday in Lexington with a slow-starting session which gained momentum throughout the day. Bloodstock agent Mike Ryan made the highest bid on the day, going to $240,000 to acquire the -Son Farm-bred Ready for Romance (More Than Ready) (hip 917) on behalf of Fifth Avenue Bloodstock. Ryan bidding for the same client when he purchased the Veracity (Distorted Humor) for $460,000 Tuesday. Ready for Romance was one of two horses to top the six-figure mark Wednesday. At the third session of last year’s January sale, four horses sold for six figures, with a by Into Mischief bringing the top price of $150,000. KEEJAN coverage cont. p7

So the enormity of the achievement by Coolmore’s flagship sire, Galileo, in scoring the highest A Runner Index (4.09) for a North American or European sire with 200+ year-starters, and for the second year running, cannot be overstated. With 1,945 year-starters in the seven-year period 2009-2015, he is second in that category only to fellow Coolmore sire Giant’s Causeway, who has 2,143 year-starters in that period--over 300 a year. Three sires--Galileo (4.09), Spendthrift’s Into Mischief (4.07), and Claiborne’s War Front (3.89)--broke away from the pack among 448 North American and European sires which had 200 or more year-starters in the seven-year period 2009-2015. Yes, I said Into Mischief. With just 140 foals in his first four crops he had five A Runners last year, three of them GSW. He has about as many 2-year-olds of 2016 as in his first four crops combined, so it will be a big challenge for him to sustain these figures, but if he’s anywhere close as his crops size quadruple he’ll be even bigger news. One striking aspect of this year’s figures is the falling number of sires which for APEX ratings. From 2007-2012 there were between 1,043--1,156 sires which stood in North America, Europe, or Japan which qualified for ratings. No doubt as a result of the World Financial Crash of 2008, combined with a contraction in the number of sires and further concentration on sires with bigger books, the number of APEX sires fell to exactly 1,000 in 2013, and has fallen a further 18%, to just 820 APEX sires in 2015 (key criterion: 10+ 3-year-olds of 2012); that’s a total drop of almost 30% in the number of APEX sires since 2007. Of the 820 qualifying APEX sires, just 448 North American and European sires had 200 or more year-starters (a horse is counted as one year-starter each year it starts, up to seven) in 2009-2015. Of those 448, a total of 51 sires (11%) finished 2015 with A Runner Index ratings of 2.00 or higher, of which 10 scored 3.00 or higher. An A Runner Index of 4.00 equals 8.00% A Runners from year-starters; 3.00 equals 6.00% A Runners/year-starters; and 2.00 equals 4.00% A Runners/year-starters. Of the 10, two died in 2012, Monsun (3.50) and Dynaformer (3.03). Of the eight active sires with 200+ year-starters 2009-2015 and 3.00+ A Runner indexes, five stand in Kentucky; the number one sire, Galileo, is of course based in Ireland; and two, Darley’s Dubawi (3.16) and Juddmonte’s Dansili (3.07), stand in England. The Kentucky-based sires, besides numbers two-three Into Mischief and War Front, are: Adena Springs’ Ghostzapper (3.36); Darley’s Medaglia d’Oro (3.31); and WinStar’s Speightstown (3.30). APEX ratings, as we regularly emphasize, pinpoint which most consistently sire top-2% runners. As you’ll remember (and see ‘Bullet Points’), besides the top 2% A Runners, we also calculate ‘next 2%' (B Runners), ‘next 4%' (C Runners), and ‘top 8%’ (ABC Runners combined), which we also describe as ‘break-even-or- better’ runners (see Earnings Thresholds). Older sires have a natural advantage when we tally the number of A Runners and ABC Runners. Galileo and Giant’s Into Mischief is second by Causeway are A Runner Index | Spendthrift Farm one-two both in number of A Runners (an astronomical 159 for Galileo, 106 for Giant’s Causeway) and number of ABC Runners (Galileo 369, Giant’s Causeway 330). APEX BULLET POINTS * APEX Ratings are assigned only to sires which had 10+ 3-year-olds of the last year covered (this year, that means 10+ foals of 2012). This has two effects: first, it eliminates those 'random' sires, often in small jurisdictions which never compete in the 'big leagues'. Including those has the effect of inflating earnings indexes so that average sires look better than average because they are compared to 'minor league' sires. Second, restricting it to sires with 3-year-olds means freshman sires, with their first 2-year-olds, are not rated; in our experience, their ratings are just too volatile. *The indexes are calculated on a rolling seven-year basis; each year, the last year is added and the eighth previous dropped off. These calculations cover the period 2009-2015. Therefore, they are 'career' figures for all sires with first foals 2007 (2-year-olds of 2009) or later; Dubawi, Shamardal, and Kitten's Joy all had their first foals in 2007. The seven-year cut-off means that once-great sires which are no longer as good are not rated on their career figures, but on their results for the previous seven years.

*The figures are calculated on racing in seven different countries, representing five different 'jurisdictions' and summarized in three regions. The five jurisdictions are: US and Canada (North America); Britain and Ireland; France; and Germany (these three combined as 'Europe'); and Japan. *There are 17 different APEX Ratings, of which the most important is the Combined, or Total, A Runner Index. The calculations are made separately in each of the five jurisdictions and the results Galileo and Speightstown are tied for third at 2.37 each, added together to yield a Combined, or Total figure. followed by War Front (2.23), veteran California sire Unusual *Sires are rated (via indexing) by their efficacy in siring runners Heat (2.19), Medaglia d’Oro (2.18), Into Mischief (2.15), Dubawi which achieve certain earnings thresholds in each jurisdiction. Romance on Top at Keeneland Mike Ryan, who struck late in Tuesday’s session of the Keeneland January sale to secure Veracity (Distorted Humor) for $460,000 on behalf of Fifth Avenue Bloodstock, was back in action during Wednesday’s session of the five-day auction. Ryan paid $240,000 to secure the racing or broodmare prospect Ready for Romance (More Than Ready) from the Sam-Son Farm consignment for that same client. Bred by Sam-Son, Ready for Romance (hip 917) has won three of four trips to the post, including a wire-to-wire victory in the July 18 Ontario Damsel S. She is out of Strange Romance (Mr. Greeley), a half-sister to graded stakes winners Matt’s Brown Vow (Broken Vow) and High Button Shoes (Carson City). The filly will likely be back at the racetrack this spring, according to Ryan.

“The GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile has been won by Tapizar, Goldencents (twice), and Liam’s Map in the last four years; the 2011 edition was won by Caleb’s Posse, defeating Shackleford. Caleb’s Posse had previously won the GI King’s Bishop at Saratoga, and as a 4-year-old dropped a nose decision to Shackleford in the 2012 GI Met Mile in what proved to be his final career start. Golden Slipper winner Vancouver will target Royal Ascot | Coolmore OPPENHEIM ON APEX RATINGS By James Willoughby Coolmore=s Galileo found himself atop Bill Oppenheim=s The arrival of the Australian champion juvenile Vancouver APEX (Annual Progeny Earnings indeX) ratings once again in (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) at could turn out one of the 2015. How good is this colt, whose G1 Golden Slipper win for Gai Waterhouse was mighty impressive? And what are his chances of a top-level strike in Europe? First, as an aperitif to the European campaign, Vancouver's purchase by Coolmore and others and his transcontinental switch from Gai Waterhouse to Aidan O'Brien isn't bad. Let's face it: intrigue surrounding each Flat campaign isn't exactly buzzing like it used to, partly because nobody expects the dominance of O'Brien and Coolmore to end. O'Brien has done well with former antipodean stars like So You Think (NZ) ( {Ire}), Starspangledbanner (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) and Haradasun (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus), and Vancouver's Golden Slipper win over six furlongs last March was mighty impressive. It is not hard to work out the appeal of switching the colt to Europe: nowadays, it is obvious that the leading racing and breeding operations are keen to cultivate links through horses to different countries and continents because revenues from shuttling stallions are much greater. Vancouver's win in the Slipper was much more impressive than it reads on paper. Cont. p2 TDN EUROPE $ PAGE 2 of 7$ THETDN.COM THURSDAY, 14TH JANUARY 2016
