Module Overview:

The aim of this module is to teach students to analyse and design analogue and digital electronic circuits. The module also aims to give the students an understanding of the theory and operation of circuits used in analogue integrated circuits and an understanding of the structure, properties and use of memory devices.

Learning Outcomes (LO): (to be numbered) For a 5ECTS module a range of 4-10 LOs is recommended On Completion of this module, the learner will be able to 1 Design and give the circuit diagrams for operational -based circuits. 2 Analyse and explain the operation of various based circuits. 3 Describe operational amplifier imperfections and analyse the effects that these imperfections have on the performance of operational amplifier circuits. 4 Derive and evaluate expressions for the electronic characteristics of analogue circuits; 5 Analyse and design analog IC subcircuits. 6 Apply state design techniques to the analysis and design of digital circuits. 7 Explain data conversion techniques and describe the operation of data conversion circuits. 8 Describe the structure, configuration, timing parameters and diagrams for memory elements. 9 Carry out experiments in the design, analysis and simulation of analogue and digital electronic circuits. 10 Present experimental findings through written reports.

Indicative Syllabus:

Operational : Operational amplifier limitations: bias currents; offset voltages; frequency response; drift; slew rate. Effect of limitations on operational amplifier circuits. Use of Laplace transform to determine error outputs. Stability and frequency compensation. Non-linear op-amp circuits: precision rectifiers; comparators; limiters; Schmitt triggers; logarithmic amplifier.

Direct-Coupled Design: Source coupled pairs. Active biasing techniques. Current sources, sinks, mirrors.

Synchronous and Event driven systems: Design of synchronous and event driven circuits. Race hazards.

Data Conversion Systems: D-to-A and A-to-D specifications, methods, converters.

Memory: ROM and RAM: structures; configuration; cycles and timing diagrams; address decoding and interfacing.

Learning and Teaching Methods:

This module will be delivered a series of lectures which will include problem solving exercises and practical laboratory exercises with associated self-directed learning
