One Book Wyoming: In Our Time Discussion Guide HAPPY READING AND DISCUSION! You’ll find included here questions to jumpstart discussion of Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time, this year’s One Book Wyoming. Some questions address Hemingway’s writing style, and some address the themes and concerns of particular stories in the collection. They are intended as starting points for discussion; our hope is that as you begin talking about these stories, your specific interests and observations about the stories will allow you to move beyond this starting point. The questions are roughly ordered by the order of stories in In Our Time, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump around to the questions that are most interesting to you. BACKGROUND ON IN OUR TIME In Our Time, Hemingway’s first collection of short stories, took several forms before its initial publication in 1925. Hemingway published many of the short “interchapters” first; the poet Ezra Pound commissioned six of them for a literary magazine in 1923. Hemingway then added twelve more and published in our time in1924. For the 1925 publication, fourteen short stories were added to the collection and the title was capitalized. “On the Quai at Smyrna,” the opening chapter, was written for the 1930 edition. Because so many of the short stories involve the same characters and settings, In Our Time is considered a “short story cycle,” which involves, according to scholar Margaret E. Wright-Cleveland, a collection “of interdependent narratives linked through repetition of character, setting, or theme.” In other words, while you can read the short stories as self-contained, thinking about how the stories are in conversation with each other may provide a deeper, more nuanced understanding of Hemingway’s work Discussion questions “On the Quai at Smyrna” (pg. -

BOOK REVIEWS Southern Africa After Apartheid: Regional Integration and External Resources Edited by B. Oden. Uppsala, Scandinavian Institute of African Studies, 1993, 271 pp., ISBN 97-7106-332-3, Z$27. This volume consists of a collection of papers presented anonymously in a seminar organized by the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies in May 1992. The contributors are in the main a group of academics and some public officials from the Scandinavian countries and Southern Africa (Botswana and South Africa). The volume is divided into four main areas, viz., theory oriented, issue oriented, organization oriented and external resource oriented perspectives. Many of the chapters summarize existing literature (often without references) rather than contribute new data or new perspectives. Of academic interest are the theory oriented perspectives, the first of which summarizes the available literature on the theories of regional integration, namely the classical approach, the developmental approach and the neo-functional approach. The relevance of these theories to Southern Africa is critically evaluated and this evaluation seems to agree with the available literature concluding that none of the above theories suits the conditions in Southern Africa. The reasons for this conclusion lie in the fact that the circumstances in the sub-region differ within and between countries. -

© 2018 JETIR November 2018, Volume 5, Issue 11 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) Language of Representation in Earnest Hemingway’s ‘Cat in the Rain’ Vaishali R Deshmukh Associate Professor Department of English Shri Shivaji Arts and Commerce College, Amravati, Maharashtra, India Abstract: The language in general use in society and culture exhibit those features that tend to project a devalued image of women. Literary language too represents the devalued image of women and the structure of power relations between the sexes that it portrays. There are some general features that differentiate the language of men from that of women writers. One of them is about the language of representation, used especially in literary discourse, in the description of the sexes, male and female persons or characters in poetry, fiction and drama. It has been observed that in the description of women by male writers, there is a kind of fragmentation, a kind of analysis of the female and anatomical features. On the other hand, we do not find this kind of anatomization or fragmentation in the description of males. Generally the physical description is confined to the head, the face or their overall appearance and then the description moves on to the mental or intellectual qualities. The paper aims at studying men’s perception of women through the analysis of the language of representation. The way women describe men and the men describe women clearly underlines the difference in their perception of each other. Ernest Hemingway’s short story ‘Cat in the Rain’ is chosen for the present analysis. -

Nordic Journal of African Studies 22(4): 256–273 (2013) Vindicating Dambudzo Marechera: Features of Cultic Remembering Anna-Leena TOIVANEN University of Eastern Finland, Finland ABSTRACT The article approaches the ongoing cultic phenomenon around the Zimbabwean author Dambudzo Marechera from the viewpoint of cultic remembrance. The diverse text corpus concerned with the writer is marked by nuances of regret and loss. These affects reveal a sense of guilt that envelops the author‘s memory, as well as a willingness to compensate the past wrongdoings to which Marechera is seen to become subjected. The sadness around Marechera‘s memory seems to spring from the conception that Marechera was misunderstood during his lifetime. Currently, however, he is seen to have been ahead of his time, a postcolonial writer avant la lettre , and a talent wasted in a hostile environment. What adds to Marechera‘s “tragedy” is that he is interpreted to have predicted the Zimbabwe crisis. Today, Marechera is seen to haunt the world of the living in a ghostly manner, which indicates a melancholic unwillingness to accept the writer‘s loss. INTRODUCTION Representations of the life story of the Zimbabwean writer Dambudzo Marechera (1952–1987) are shaded by sadness. He died at the age of 35, or “in his prime”, as it is frequently expressed in texts dealing with his legacy. The works 1 of the author, repeatedly described as controversial, had a polarized reception: he was both celebrated as an award-winning literary genius and condemned for betraying his people and had one of his novels banned in Zimbabwe. -

GAYANE GRIGORYAN RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COUPLES IN HEMENGWAYS SHORT STORIES (Cat in the Rain, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Hills Like White Elephants) These short stories discuss the problems between couples. They came from Hemingways own life experiences. From his early childhood he had a strong desire to make his parents proud of him, but this was in constant conflict with his need to tell a story In these stories, there is a gradual shift in the dynamics of the relationships as Hemingways fictional women struggle to climb from under mens domina- tion. Hemingway never recovers from the emotional damage inflicted by his mother, evident in his personal life and in the dysfunctional relationships in his short stories. He remains vigilant and is concerned that he will end up like his father and be controlled by a domineering bitch. However, Hemingway exerts so much control in his relationships and becomes a version of his mother. In his life, he transitions from an angry resentful child-man to a young husband, a reluctant parent, a ladies man, and an adventurer. Likewise, his perception and portrayal of women in his short stories keep pace with his personal experiences. Hemingway began his writing career when he was well versed in the ways of Mother Nature, but rather naive in the ways of women. This led to stories rich in narrative descriptions concerning nature, but lacking in development of his female characters. Over the course of his career, Hemingways interaction with women strengthens his understanding of them and this can be detected as changes, not just in his female characters, but also in the relationship dynamics between men and women. -

Perceiving every established notion as inherently entrapping, Dambudzo Marechera rejects and strives to elude all manner of categorisation which tends to submerge one's individuality. His fundamental conviction is that only those whose motive is to exercise power over other human beings insist on fixed notions such a~ nation, race, culture, religion and ideology. This is because such self-seekers realise that hur:nan beings tend to be more susceptible to manipulation if they identify themselves with established categories or discourses. Given the trend in African writing during the anti-colonial period to identify with nationalist discourse, Marechera cuts the figure of a literary funambulist: not only does he refuse to write for a specific nation or race, but he also dismisses fixed notions of nation and race as spurious Machiavellian fabrications aimed at fossilising people's minds for purposes of easier regimentation. Predictably, Marechera invokes the wrath of nationalist critics who see in him a self-deprecating African reactionary or a mere Uncle Tom who affects European avant-gardism.
