SRI LANKAN POLITICS AND SOCIAL MEDIA PARTICIPATION A CASE STUDY OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2019 Chintha Kaluarachchi, Ruwan Nagahawatta, Matthew Warren Deakin University (Australia) [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Social media has been a recent phenomenon which impact all parts of the society. The aim of this study is to investigate the key themes of the posts that dominated social media landscape and user generated interactions related to those posts during the Sri Lankan presidential election 2019. The paper has shown that social media has the ability to generate discussion and debate. The most popular FB posting was to promote particular presidential candidates, and it may possibly a guided influence. The most interacted themes were “Social fragmentation and reduce voter’s loyalty theme” and “economic justice”. When we analyse the user interactions we can see both guided and freely evolving interactions related to the Sri Lankan presidential election 2019. The authors have shown that Facebook did have guided and freely evolving influences on the Sri Lankan presidential election of 2019. Findings of the case study concluded that there is a significant impact on politics campaign and level of user’s interaction of social media. Further, it was established that the misuse of social media has becoming a major challenge for future free and fair elections. Therefore, necessitates the need for a national social media policy that focuses on election as key stakeholders in the registered political parties. • Sinhala Language Corpora and Stopwords from a Decade of Sri Lankan Facebook
Sinhala Language Corpora and Stopwords from a Decade of Sri Lankan Facebook Yudhanjaya Wijeratne†, Nisansa de Silva‡ † LIRNEasia, 12 Balcombe Place, Colombo, Sri Lanka ([email protected]) ‡ University of Oregon, 1585 E 13th Ave, Eugene, OR 97403, United States ([email protected]) LIRNEasia is a pro-poor, pro-market think tank whose mis- sion is catalyzing policy change through research to improve people’s lives in the emerging Asia Pacific by facilitating their use of hard and soft infrastructures through the use of knowledge, information and technology. This work was carried out with the aid of a grant from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Ottawa, Canada. 1 Abstract This paper presents two colloquial Sinhala language corpora from the language efforts of the Data, Analysis and Policy team of LIRNEasia, as well as a list of algorithmically derived stopwords. The larger of the two corpora spans 2010 to 2020 and contains 28,825,820 to 29,549,672 words of multilingual text posted by 533 Sri Lankan Facebook pages, including politics, media, celebrities, and other categories; the smaller corpus amounts to 5,402,76 words of only Sinhala text extracted from the larger. Both corpora have markers for their date of creation, page of origin, and content type. Introduction ‘The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.’ – Ludwig Wittgenstein Sinhala, as with many other languages in the Global South, currently suffers from a phenomenon know as resource poverty [1]. To wit, many of the fundamental tools that are required for easy and efficient natural language analysis are unavailable; many of the more computational components taken for granted in languages like English are either as yet unbuilt, in a nascent stage, and in other cases, lost or retained among select institutions [2].

  • Sri Lanka's Recent Political Challenges & Prospects for the Future
Commentary Sri Lanka’s Recent Political Challenges & Prospects for the Future Bhavani Fonseka and Uvin Dissanayake March 2020 Introduction Sri Lanka is at present preparing for Parliamentary Elections due to be held on 25th April 2020. Parliamentary elections will take place five months after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa took office on 18th November 2019, a period in which several trends were discerned with implications for reconciliation, governance, the rule of law and security in Sri Lanka. The election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a significant departure from previous elections as it was the first time an individual with no previous experience of elected political office was sworn in as President. This was also the first Presidential election where the mandate of the winner of 6,924,255 votes1 was received predominantly from the predominantly Southern Sinhala-majority electorate.2 The margin of over a million votes is an indicator of the massive support for President Rajapaksa who ran on a platform of security, stability and discipline and speaks to the deeply polarised post war context in Sri Lanka. In the days since being elected to the office, President Rajapaksa made key statements, decisions and appointments that provided glimpses into the policy direction of his regime. Noteworthy is the fact that as per the Nineteenth Amendment to the constitution he is also the first Executive President unable to hold any ministries. 1 Election Commission of Sri Lanka, “2019 Sri Lanka Presidential Election Results”, 17th Nov 2019, https://results.elections.gov.lk/
