The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

Original Language: Chinese Contents: English Translation To the Central Committee: The following is a report on the results of the series of discussions on the question of Rao Shushi called by the decision of the Secretarial of the Central Committee. A total of seven meetings were held. The first four meetings focused on the facts of the mistakes committed by Comrade Rao Shushi. At the fifth and sixth meetings, many comrades spoke and continued to expose his mistakes. Rao spoke at the seventh meeting, making a self- criticism. Comrades Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yi then made addresses to the meeting, thereby concluding the discussions. The meetings were attended by twenty-six comrades including some from East China who were in Beijing or who had been transferred to Beijing, as well as comrades of central departments and ministries who had work relations with Rao. -

Chen Yi Composing to Honor Her Past Michael Murphy Michael Murphy is director of choral activities at the University of Idaho ( U of I), where he conducts the Vandaleers Concert Choir, University Chorus, Womens Choir, and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting and choral methods. He is artistic director of the Palouse Choral Society Chorale and Chamber Choir and founder/artistic director of the Idaho Bach Festival. He received degrees in conducting and choral music education from Florida State University (PhD) and East Carolina University (MM BM). Murphy is President-Elect of Idaho ACDA. <[email protected]> 28 CHORAL JOURNAL Volume 53 Number 2 Composer Chen Yi’s (Chen is her family name) choral music has enjoyed increasing popularity in the United States. Born and raised in China, she has successfully created a unique compositional voice of uniting Western and Eastern infl uences into her music. Chen is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance and is also the 2012 ACDA Raymond Brock Commission Composer. Murphy Describe your early infl uences and how they have infl uenced the compositional nature of your work. Chen I started piano lessons when I was three years old and then violin lessons at age four. My parents, both medical doctors, are classical music fans. We listened to countless recordings, including voice solo works and operas from classical repertoire. As a child, I developed a love for the beauty of Chinese folk-song singing and the musical style of Beijing Opera. All these musical experiences are implanted into my ear and blood. -

He was condemned, with his wife Dong Hui, to imprisonment and to laogai camps for the rest of his life. His posthumous rehabilitation in 1982 transformed him into a legendary national hero. Illustrative of the political struggles in 1953-1955, the Pan Hannian affair seems to reveal the methods Mao Zedong used from time to time in managing the Party internally so as to maintain his dominant position in the leadership. -

194 Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization Perspectives Aside from the aspects summarized here, it is not easy to reconstruct Fraenkel’s time in Shang- hai in great detail. In many respects, we still have to rely on assumptions, for example, when trying to reconstruct the exact circumstances of his release from Sachsenhausen and his trip to Shanghai, but, most importantly, also his artistic and cultural impact during the exile years: how did Fraenkel make contacts in Shanghai? How did he find a connection to the city’s music scene so quickly, gaining a comparatively privileged position in the impoverished immigrant community, in contrast to Julius Schloß or Karl Steiner, who had to make ends meet in bars as accordion and piano players?137 Further studies of his estate, a more comprehensive consideration of the oral history, which was only cursorily included here, and, last but not least, more precise analyses of his musical works could certainly help to answer these and other questions that arise. For the time being, it remains remarkable how sensitively Fraenkel reacted to the state of music in China and how this was partly reflected in his writings and works. From the perspective of Chinese music historiography, Fraenkel is a small but crucial build- ing block. Without him, the early reception of musical modernism in China would probably not have taken place at all, and the sensational “second musical modernity” in China during the 1980s and 1990s (→ III.5) would not have found any point of reference in its own past. Fraenkel’s work as a pedagogue, conductor, musician, and composer deserves to be further examined in China as well as in the West. -

With the goal of increasing exposure for Taiwanese and Chinese composers and for contemporary music, this dissertation presents a collection of selected pieces by six composers of the 20th century, including Taiwanese composers Ty-Zen Hsiao (b. 1938), Shui-Long Ma (b. 1939), Fan- Ling Su (b. 1955) and Kwang-I Yin (b. 1960), as well as Chinese composers Chen Yi (b. 1953) and Tan Dun (b. 1957). These six composers were born between 1930 and 1960. Their compositional styles display many of the compositional techniques that characterize this diverse period, ranging from post-romanticism and neo-classicism to serialism and minimalism. This dissertation not only presents detailed biographical information on the six composers, but also enhances students’ understanding of the historical time period in each of these composers’ various home countries.
