Read the article at http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/88808042.html Former Viking David Worthington's Southern University team won the SWAC championship to earn the Jaguars a berth in the NCAA tournament. Southern will take on LSU at Alex Box Stadium on Friday at noon. Former Viking standout Jordan Powell picked up his first win and save for the pitching for the Lancaster Jethawks of the Class A(High) California League. JP is currently 2-0 on the mound for the season with a 2.84 ERA, a save, and an impressive 13K to BB ratio.. You can follow Jordan this season at http://www.jethawks.com/ Be sure to check out David "Dabo" Worthington on ESPN 2 on Saturday, February 21 at 8:00 p.m. as his Southern University Jaguars take on San Diego State in the MLB Youth Academy Tournament in Compton, Calif. Congratulations to former Viking Ben Wolgamot on being named to the First Team 2008 All-Big Ten Baseball team! The awards keep piling in for former Viking slugger David "Dabo" Worthington. Dabo was named Mid-West Athletic Conference Player of the Year, a First Team NJCAA All-American, and was awarded with a Rawling Gold Glove for his defensive play at First Base! David committed to play baseball for Division I Southern University in Baton Rouge. Southern has produced some big-time baseball talent over the years including major leaguers: Rickie Weeks, Lou Brock, Trinadad Hubbard, and John Hariston. Congratulations to former Viking record holder Ben Wolgamot for being named the Big Ten Conference's Player of the Week for his performance against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Wolgamot helped Purdue to a 3-1 series victory at Iowa over the weekend, batting .563 with a .688 slugging percentage to give the Boilermakers a 6-2 Big Ten record this season. Ben's best game came in the series finale when he went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI as the Boilermakers won, 16-3. In a non-conference game against 2007 College World Series participant Louisville on Wednesday, Wolgamot was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of walks, which brought his weekly stat line to a .611 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage and a .722 slugging percentage. The Boilermaker currently leads the Big Ten in average (.478) and on-base percentage (.625) during conference action. Former Viking standout Ben Wolgamot is off to a phenomenal start for the Purdue Boilermakers. Ben is currently leading the team in hitting with an amazing .443 batting average and .551% on-base- percentage, is second on the team in runs, and is third on the team in RBI's. In Big Ten Conference play Ben leads Purdue in batting average, walks, stolen bases, and is second in runs, hits, RBI's, and doubles. Since Ben has been inserted into the starting line-up the Boilermakers have gone 15-6 & 9-3 (2nd Place) in Big Ten Conference play. Former Viking standout Tyler Brandon leads the NATION in E.R.A. at 0.69. He has surrendered only three earned runs over 39 1/3 innings for the EIU Panters. TB also has 2 saves on the year as Eastern's relief specialist. Former Viking great Jordan Powell was assigned to the Houston Astros Class A Lexington Legends of the South Atlantic League. JP pitched a scoreless inning of relief on Saturday, April 5 versus the Asheville Tourists in his debut. Congratulations to former Viking standout Ben Wolgamot on a phenomenal Spring and Summer. Ben was named the NJCAA Central District Defensive Player of the Year by posting a .983 fielding percentage, recording 83 putouts, 88 assists and turning 12 double plays at second base and comitted only three errors for the DACC Jaguars. Ben also received several national awards in 2007, being named the Easton NJCAA Division II Baseball Defensive Player of the Year. The hardware continued to pile up for the 2nd Baseman. Ben won the first ever Rawlings Gold Glove Award for collegiate athletes. The Rawlings Gold Glove Award has been the benchmark of excellence and performance in the field for major leaguers. However, beginning in 2007 the award now also symbolize the best of the best at the collegiate level as well. Ben will receive a Gold Grove trophy for the mantle just like the big league award. To top off a great spring Ben had an outstanding summer playing for the Danville Dans of the Central Illinois Collegiate League being selected to the CICL All-Star Team and finishing second in the league in hitting at .329. Congratulations to former Viking slugger David "Dabo" Worthington. Dabo was named a pre-season JUCO All- American Congratulations to former Viking great Jordan Powell on being selected in the 32-round of the MLB draft by the Houston Astros. Jordan is the 2nd Danville Viking to be drafted professionally under Head Coach Gary Gritton. Jordan reported to Rookie League in Greenville, TN and picked up his first professional victory on June 18. Jordan has recently been promoted to the Class A Tri-City Valleycats of the New York-Penn League where he threw 2 innings of shutout relief on September 4 striking out 4 Oneonta Tigers hitters. Congratulations to former Viking Ben Wolgamot on signing a letter of intent to play Division I baseball at Purdue University. Go Boilers! Congratulations to former Viking standout Jordan Powell who was named Captain of the Southern Illinois University Saluki Baseball Team for 2007! Jordan improved his record to 5-2 as the ace of the Saluki pitching staff, striking out a career high 8 batters vs. Northern Illinois. Congratulations to former Viking great Tyler Brandon. TB (1-1) picked up his first win as an Eastern Illinois University Panther with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief versus Indiana State. The junior entered the game with EIU trailing 3-2 and a runner at second with one out. He retired the first two batters he faced to keep it a one-run game. Congratulations to former Viking standout Jason Anderson who collected his first win of the spring for the Chicago Cubs! Jason threw 2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing no runs on only 1 hit. Congratulations to former Viking standout Ben Wolgamot. The holder of the single-season hit record at DHS was listed as the #4 ranked second baseman in Junior College by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. .
