Finally, visit the “Have No Fear” Center, dedicated to John Paul II. Dinner on your own and overnight in Krakow. Day 4: Friday, April 24 • Auschwitz | Czestochowa This morning, depart for Auschwitz, where St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein) and St. Maximilian Kolbe suffered martyrdom. In the afternoon, continue to Czestochowa to visit the Jasna Gora Monastery, the Treasure House and the Chapel of the Black Madonna, which contains one of the most important icons of Mary. Politicization of Sexuality and the Lesbian and Gay Movement in Poland
Anna Gruszczy ńska Ph.D. candidate School of Languages and Social Sciences Aston University, Birmingham, UK WHEN HOMO -CITIZENS GO MARCHING IN: POLITICIZATION OF SEXUALITY AND THE LESBIAN AND GAY MOVEMENT IN POLAND In this paper I would like to analyze the processes whereby from 2001 on, marches, pride parades and demonstrations have become the most visible and contested activity of the Polish lesbian and gay movement. As Graff argues in her report on the situation of sexual minorities in Poland in the post-accession landscape, through public activist events, the figure of the homosexual (even though “real” gays and lesbians might continue to live deeply closeted) has moved from the margin of collective consciousness to the centre of an increasingly polarized public debate (Graff 2006). The crux of the debate seems to be the hotly contested definition of Polish citizenship - as I attempt to show in this text, most of the protests against lesbian and gay demonstrations consist in the efforts of the right-wing to reclaim the category of “true Pole”. On the other hand, I argue that the gay and lesbian movement is using marches and pride parades to broaden the category of Polish citizenship so that it can also include sexual minorities who are being actively excluded by the right wing. In my analysis, I will rely on theories, which are helpful in the analysis of activism in public space, starting from theories which deal with the division into public and private, with a focus on the context of post- socialist transformation, through theories of citizenship and national identity. -

ALINA PAYNE Renaissance sgraffito Facades and the Circulation of Objects in the Mediterranean In scholarship on Renaissance architecture ornament has become synonymous with columns and entablatures, friezes and capitals. In effect this is the default setting for any discussion of the topic: in the wake of Leon Battista Alberti the column was ac- knowledged to be »the principal ornament without any doubt«, such that even ap- plied carved panels and sculpture have remained on the periphery of theoretical at- tention at the time, and scholarly thereafter. Vitruvius was the reference point and what was not to be found in his text fell into oblivion no matter how much present in practice. Even fi gural sculpture, attached to so many early modern facades, fell outside of the discussions, as if extraneous to their architectural support.1 In this essay I would like to turn to a different and even more neglected archi- tectural device – the sgraffi to façade – a fl amboyant, extreme instance of pure orna- ment, that has experienced an almost total eclipse in scholarly work, entirely elim- inated from the Western scholar’s Aufgaben (fi g. 1). Indeed scholars’ attention has been almost exclusively turned to the carved stone façade, that is, a tectonic con- struct that combines the ubiquitous orders with sculptural elements into a modu- lated three-dimensional structure. This is the tradition of the Bramante/Raphael/ Peruzzi palace façade, subsequently modifi ed by Michelangelo, and it is the tradi- tion that derives from him that made this formulation into the predominant semi- otic expression of architecture as tectonic/sculptural build-up. -

47 Mastema 48 Matejko, Jan Jan Alojzy Matejko (1848–1893) was a Polish painter, draughtsman, portraitist, and representa- tive of historicism and academism in European painting. He created numerous religious and sacred paintings, and was the originator of the national Polish school of historical painting. Matejko initially wanted to become a religious painter and considered sacred painting his calling. However, after the defeat of the Polish January Up- rising (1863/4), he turned more towards historical painting – a move significantly influenced by Józef Szujski, co-founder of the so-called Kraków School of History. Matejko made numerous artistic journeys, visit- ing the following art centers in Europe: Paris (in 1867, 1870, 1878, 1880), Vienna (in 1866, 1867, 1870, 1872, 1873, 1882, 1888), Istanbul/I˙stanbul (1872), Prague and Budapest (1873), and Venice, Rome, and Florence (1878/1879 and 1883). He suc- cessfully exhibited his paintings many times at pub- lic exhibitions outside Poland, in major cities of Eu- rope, including Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London, Prague, Budapest, and St. Petersburg. Matejko’s “religious” paintings can be divided into three groups. They also often have some unique capabilities to do research and development (R&D). However, these possibilities are often known only to a small group of industry specialists and few parliamentary representatives. There is also a lack of information about research capabilities of R&D institutes in industry, especially among small and medium enterprises. The aim of the article is to present the concept of a multidisciplinary research project aimed at testing by a scientific research institution the possibility of using social media and modern techniques of visualization and computer simulation in aircraft reconstruction engineering. The authors propose to try the approach of marketing campaign capabilities of research and development institutions in a way similar to the action of raising funds for some purpose, but unlike this type of action, the campaign should be aimed at increasing technical awareness of the society. As part of the pilot program, the authors propose a virtual reconstruction of the construction of the Polish PZL P-50 Jastrząb fighter plane whose two prototypes were created before the outbreak of World War II. -

Education (preferred majors) and preferred hard skills (e.g. languages, computer skills, fund market knowledge) and soft skills (personal attributes) necessary for this job 4. Training needs 5. Best practices – on the example of the National Museum in Krakow 1. Introduction Nowadays the work of a cultural events manager starts long before the planned event actually takes place, and one of the elements of preparatory work is the analysis of the financing method of the planned event (a number of options), the preparation of financial engineering (a number of options) and raising funds for the planned cultural event. Thus a culture manager equally frequently acts as a fundraiser, or performs such a function. At the same time organizing an event from external funds requires from a culture manager knowledge in the scope of various possibilities of financing cultural events both from public and private sources, as well as the ability to manage the project in accordance with the application or feasibility study, to carry out projects in compliance not only with legal requirements and regulations applicable in a given country or regulations of institutions the manager works in, but also the requirements of the grant provider co‐financing the event. It is also necessary to account for the event in accordance with the imposed rules, which entails the collection of documents according to specific guidelines, their adequate description and expenditure of funds within required deadlines, subject to loss of their eligibility.
