Les observations portant sur l’Enquête reviennent pour l’essentiel à Viviane Comerro de Prémare, celles relatives au Dictionnaire étant d’Alain Rauwel. 1 Mener l’enquête sur Dieu : on conçoit qu’il n’ait pas fallu moins de mille pages pour une telle entreprise, qui décrit et compare les pratiques et les représentations religieuses des juifs, des chrétiens et des musulmans. Elle a été confiée à des historiens et à des anthropologues des religions, sous la direction d’une historienne du judaïsme antique et d’un ethnologue des religions monothéistes. Dans le même temps, un groupe de savants a eu l’idée d’offrir au grand public cultivé, sous un format commode, non un énième catalogue de notules factuelles sur les grandes figures et les hauts faits de l’histoire dite religieuse, mais un dictionnaire au sens noble, composé d’articles point trop contraints et consacrés à des concepts fondamentaux. Cela ne signifie d’ailleurs pas que les noms propres soient absents de la liste des entrées, mais le petit nombre de ceux qui ont été retenus, à l’exception d’un lieu (Jérusalem), correspond à ce que les auteurs désignent heureusement comme des « personnages conceptuels » : Abraham, Moïse, Jésus, Paul, Muhammad ne sont pas des acteurs éphémères apparus un moment sur le théâtre sacré, ils sont des fantômes qui hantent sans trêve les sanctuaires. Revue de l’histoire des religions, 3 | 2016 4 Comme tels, ils sont aussi essentiels que les mots dieu, révélation, foi, dogme ou église à la compréhension de l’institutionnalisation des faits de croyance. Le comparatisme : nécessité et apories 2 Les deux volumes ont été confrontés d’emblée à la question capitale du comparatisme. Dieu : une enquête en adopte résolument la perspective, la revendique même, pour dépasser méthodologiquement l’étroitesse d’une démarche historiciste jugée trop contextualisante, mais aussi, sans le dire explicitement, l’exclusivisme théologique de chacun des monothéismes. Le principe retenu est donc le pari audacieux de confier à chaque auteur le traitement commun des trois religions, revenant à chacun de trouver le point d’équilibre entre continuité et rupture, ressemblances et spécificités. Dans le Dictionnaire des monothéismes, au contraire, les rédacteurs ont démissionné face au défi du comparatisme. « Judaïsme, christianisme, islam », lit-on en sous-titre. Et chaque article de présenter, quand le thème s’y prête, son paragraphe « judaïsme », son paragraphe « christianisme » et son paragraphe « islam »… Alors que les différences structurelles comme les points de convergence sautent aux yeux du lecteur, même non spécialiste, aucune présentation véritablement comparée n’a été tentée, nulle part. Il en allait pourtant de la qualification de l’ouvrage. Dumézil l’a dit, « le comparatisme est la méthode expérimentale des sciences humaines ». Une somme qui envisage des mondes et des milieux divers mais se contente d’en juxtaposer les analyses honore- t‑elle pleinement le contrat de scientificité ? Que penser de trois articles « Bible » successifs ? Que penser, plus encore, d’un Dictionnaire des monothéismes qui écarte l’indispensable article « Monothéisme » et, à l’entrée « Unicité de Dieu », n’examine la question que pour l’islam ? 3 Sur ce point, c’est le choix inverse qui a prévalu dans le chapitre de Dieu : une enquête écrit par Christian Boudignon

Individual studies were made in the past to each of these aspects separately but this paper brings concepts together to form a network of similarity of ideas that stands ultimately in contrast to another reality of understanding, that is, two sets of networks.

It pursues this inquiry out of a wider interest in German philosophy of the same period, especially as concerns debates over scientif c method. T is twofold focus, that is, on the history of German Indology and on the idea of scientif c method, is deter- mined by the subject itself: because German Indology largely def ned itself in terms of a specif c method (the historical-critical method or the text-historical method), 1 1 . T e “historical-critical method” is a broad term for a method applied in biblical criti- cism. T e method sets aside the theological meaning of the Bible in favor of its historical context. T e method can be summed up as “understanding the Bible out of [the conditions of] its time.” (T e phrase is a common one, and used, for instance in both Tschackert’s article and as the title of Reventlow’s article; for both sources, see the third section of this chapter.) Panini was a Hindu linguist and the Colonial upsurge in Sanskrit studies brought Westerners in contact with this grammarian. What became clear from this paper is that past history and ideas have a pop-up role to play when scientists are at loss what to do or say in their description of science. The scientist is not working purely empirical but his/her epistemology is subconsciously or unconsciously molded by “proof text” statements of great minds in the past that aligned with the lifestyle choice of the scientist. Chomsky pulled together in his linguistic description statements from scientists that support his own idea. Understanding Hindu religion better, enabled one to see lines of correspondence with the theory and axioms of Leonard Bloomfield and further, also with that of Noam Chomsky in his design of the Transformational Grammar.

Introduction on Rudolf von Roth Even during his lifetime Rudolf von Roth was viewed as the "grand old man" of Indology, as Stein mentioned in a letter to him dated 11th of November 1884, relating a meeting at Dr and Mrs West´s house : "Ich wurde von ihm und Mrs West sehr liebenswürdig aufgenommen und freute mich von Herzen zu sehen, wie lebhaft bei ihnen die Erinnerung an Ihren Besuch fortlebt; ein Epitheton das Mrs West Ihnen gab, traf zu sehr mein innerstes Gefühl, als dass ich diesen glücklichen Ausdruck Ihnen verheimlichen könnte; Sie haben den Titel Grand old man wohl nur mit Gladstone zu theilen, aber..." Born 1821 to a Protestant middle-class family in Stuttgart his beginning career was typical in this region and time. Educated in Urach and at the Tübinger Stift he was supposed to become a Protestant clergyman. But as he was learning the languages of the Bible he plunged deeper and deeper into philological studies. He was quite lucky having Heinrich Ewald as his teacher, who encouraged him to learn Sanskrit and Persian, besides Hebrew and Arabic. In 1843 Roth obtained his PhD from Tübingen University with a dissertation on Semitic linguistics. Then he spent two years in Paris, London and Oxford to read and copy Sanskrit manuscripts, and to meet people having the same interests. At Oxford H.H. Wilson was his tutor, to whom he dedicated his first publication: "Zur Litteratur und Geschichte des Weda” (= On the Literature and History of the Veda, outlines the aim of his entire life as a scholar) He came back to Tübingen in 1845 and three years later, in 1848, he received an extraordinary professorship and from 1856 on he occupied the first chair for Sanskrit in Tübingen.

There I argued that this myth told of two brothers, *Manu- "Man" (Sanskrit Manu, Avestan *Manus, Germanic Mannus being linguistic correspondences; Old Norse Odinn and Latin Romulus being structurally related) and *Yemo- "Twin" (Sanskrit Yama, Avestan Yima, Old Norse Ymir, and Latin Remus being linguistic matches; Germanic Tuisco being a semantic match; Sanskrit Mandvi and Purusa, Pahlavi Gayomart being structurally related).

    A Still Undeciphered Text, continued: the reply to my critics Karen Thomson The lack of response from indologists working on the Rigveda to the arguments in the first part of ‘A Still Undeciphered Text’ is understandable. Proponents of competing paradigms operate in such different worlds that debate may seem impossible. In view of this silence I am grateful to Professors Mumm and Zimmer, linguists who have grown up with the Vedic approach to the earliest Sanskrit poetry but whose main research areas are in other fields, for stepping into the breach. Professor Zimmer acknowledges that he cannot comment on “the breadth and completeness of my critical survey”, and this must be true of almost all of my readers. The attempt to convince this overwhelming majority, which includes Sanskrit scholars, remains a significant challenge. Mumm and Zimmer are representative of most Indo-European linguists in believing that the Rigveda has received, and continues to receive, the kind of scientific attention accorded to other early Indo-European texts. The comments of Asko Parpola, an expert on the later ritual texts, provide evidence of the ways in which this is not the case, and of the different kind of attention accorded to the Rigveda by Vedic scholarship. In 2004, at the end of my Commentary piece in the Times Literary Supplement, ‘Sacred Mysteries: why the Rigveda has resisted decipherment’, I expressed the view that “one day the Rigveda will be able to provide important information to scholars in other disciplines” (2004b: 15). But it needs to be studied before this can happen, and indologists do not believe that any further progress can be made with it.
