Yes, the Augusta Chorale turns 35 this year. And our concerts this season continue to embrace the dream of our founders “to use every opportunity to bring about awareness of hymns, anthems, spirituals, and the classics. “ Our singers enthusiastically welcome this tradition whether they are trained at the finest music schools or they just love to sing good music! Regardless of our member’s background, the Augusta Chorale trains singers to learn together, work together, and sing together! We believe that our music helps the world to be a better place — for us, our audience, and for those who are touched by our music whether in the public schools, nursing homes, hospitals, churches, concert halls or those who view our website at www.augustachorale.org or our Facebook page. We are committed to singing songs that lift the human heart and spirit. We are continuing our Salute to Unforgettable Singers & Songs for the 2017—2018 season! Our salute to Walter Hawkins during the Spring Concert (Sunday, May 6, 2018) will feature three generations of male singers from Augusta, Georgia. She has earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia; a Master of Arts degree in music theory from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and a Phyllis W. Anderson, artistic director, A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Doctor of Musical Arts in music education from The University of Dr. Phyllis Anderson first stepped on the red clay of Georgia in 1978. Georgia in Athens, Georgia. She is music consultant at Good Hope While completing her master's degree at Ohio State University, she was Baptist Church. She is a member of National Association for Music invited to apply for the position as choir director of Paine College in Education (NAfME), American Chapter of the Links, Inc., Delta Augusta, Georgia. During the interview with the then president, Dr. Kappa Gamma Society, and the Professional Association of Georgia Julius S. Scott, Jr., she felt an instant connection with the college. In her Educators (PAGE). words, "I came. I fell in love (with Paine College). I stayed." Under the Dr. Anderson and her husband, Walter Wesley Anderson, Jr. live in direction of Dr. Anderson, the Paine College Concert Choir produced Martinez. They have one son, Joseph. acclaimed performances including Vivaldi's Gloria; Mozart's Regina Coeli, and Handel's Messiah. During her tenure, the citizens of Augusta packed into the Gilbert–Lambuth Memorial Chapel and even stood in the vestibule to hear the glorious music that she and her students produced. A master teacher, she was gifted to teach students new to the classics. She led her students to perform Bach and Beethoven with poise and confidence which is evident in the choir's 1984 live recording of Handel's Messiah. After working as a tenured Associate Professor of Music at Paine College for 13 years, Dr. Anderson headed for her next great challenge – motherhood and teaching little children. The warm, caring staff at Grovetown Elementary School, Grovetown, Georgia, was just the place for the former professor and new mother. The staff embraced her, and she learned from them. It was at Grovetown Elementary that Dr. Anderson's 2-year old son began taking Suzuki violin from Mrs. Lois Akins, Grovetown parent and Founder of the Suzuki Strings of Augusta (SSA). Dr. Anderson’s relationship with SSA eventually moved beyond being a Suzuki parent. In 2009, Dr. Anderson invited the SSA Senior Ensemble to provide string accompaniment for the Augusta Chorale’s production of Handel’s Messiah. The Senior Ensemble accompanied the Chorale from 2009 until 2015. Dr. Anderson has earned three degrees: B. S. Norfolk State University; M. A., Ohio State University; and the D. M. A., University of Georgia. She was voted "Teacher of the Year" at Euchee Creek Elementary (Grovetown, Georgia) and at Paine College. In 2016, She was honored by the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) for her work as a music specialist in the Columbia County Schools for teaching young children for approximately three decades. She is a member of Friendly Church of God in Christ and serves as a music consultant and staff member at Good Hope Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia. She is a member of Music Educators National Conference, American Chapter of the Links, Inc., Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. She and her husband, Walter Anderson of Steubenville, Ohio, have one son, Joseph Wesley. In 2007, the Augusta Chorale invited Dr. Anderson to return to the podium as the artistic director. During her tenure, the Chorale has performed quality repertoire, presented excellent concerts and performances including the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival, public schools, veteran homes & hospitals, churches, and civic events. Under her leadership, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History presented a special exhibition of “The Augusta Chorale 1983 - 2015, 32 Years Celebrating the Beauty of Song,” during March 1 – 31, 2015. Angela Arrington, piano accompanist, The Augusta Chorale salutes Ms.

JEFFERSON (Under the Direction of Ming Fang He) ABSTRACT This study is an auto/biographical inquiry into my voice and vision as a Black woman administrator. I explore the lives of four generations of Black women in my family. Each of these women – Hattie C. Wilcher (my great grandmother), Connie W. Duggan (my mother), Danielle R. Lowe (my daughter), and I – have studied and/or taught in public schools in the U. S. south. I explore how my family narrative parallels community and historical narratives and contests the meta narrative in existing literature.
