QuinewasborninAkron,OhioonJune25,1908andattendedOberlinCollegewhere hereceivedtheB.A.inmathematicsin1930.HecametoHarvardUniversityasagraduate studentin1930andremainedaffiliatedwithHarvardfortherestofhislife.Hecompleted hisPh.D.underAlfredNorthWhiteheadin1932andspent1932-1933inEuropeasa SheldonFellow.In1933hewaselectedtothefirstgroupofJuniorFellowsoftheHarvard SocietyofFellows,wasaninstructorinphilosophyfrom1936to1941,associateprofessor from1941-1948,andprofessorbeginningin1948.In1956hebecametheEdgarPierce ProfessorofPhilosophyatHarvard,apositionhehelduntilhisretirementin1978.He marriedhisfirstwifein1930,NaomiClaytonQuine,laterdivorced,andin1948married MarjorieBoyntonQuine,whodiedin1998.QuinediedonDecember25,2000andwas survivedbyfourchildren:ElizabethQuineRoberts,NormaQuine,DouglasQuine,and MargaretQuineMcGovern. Hismajorcontributiontothephilosophicalworldbeginswith"hiscriticismofthe distinctionbetweenanalyticandsynthetictruths"inhis1951Twodogmasofempiricism.
