  • Into Mischief Colt on Top As Book 3 Concludes
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2018 REMEMBERING ROBERT P. LEVY INTO MISCHIEF COLT By Antony Beck ON TOP AS BOOK 3 My father-in-law, Robert P. Levy, was a larger-than-life character. Philanthropic, enthusiastic, a straight-shooter, and a CONCLUDES true sportsman. I met Bob before I began dating Angela, his daughter and my future wife. With me having not grown up in the U.S. and he being a co-owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, Bob took great pride in introducing me to his brand of Americana through the sport of baseball, showing me the strategy and science that had made it a national pastime. Of course, Bob also loved horse racing, and as a racetrack owner, was a pioneer in every respect. In the early years that he operated Atlantic City Race Course, Bob was eloquently, but accurately described by Daily Racing Form turf writer Joe Hirsch as "a veritable fountainhead of fresh and intriguing thoughts on racing." For the latest news, go online to http://breeding.bloodhorse.com BY DAVID SCHMITZ GLENCREST STALLION WAVERING MONARCH DEAD Raise a Native-line stallion known as successful broodmare sire avering Monarch, a multiple grade I winner Wwhose champion son Maria’s Mon sired 2001 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Monarchos, died June 17 because of the infirmities of old age at the Greathouse family’s Glencrest Farm near Midway, Ky. The 25-year-old son of Majestic Light started his stallion career at Spendthrift Farm near Lex- ington before returning to Glencrest. His death came after the June 5 death of farm stallion Clever Trick. “It is such a shame that we had to put down Wa- vering Monarch, because he was a home product through and through, and excelled as both a sire and a broodmare sire,” said David Greathouse. “He will be sorely missed.” Wavering Monarch served as a link to the past when Greathouse’s late father, John Greathouse Sr., owned and operated Glencrest. A big colt, Wa- vering Monarch was viewed as Kentucky Derby material while growing up, but didn’t start until the Keeneland spring meeting as a 3-year-old after a slight injury in New York that winter. BRANT GAMMA Wavering Monarch promptly won his first two Wavering Monarch 1 races by 17 ⁄2 lengths, then ran third in the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I). His inexperience caught up with him, and sire and sire of 2-year-olds.
