10 Saturday, August 8, 2009 John’s Call – Continued from page 9 Clifton wasn’t impressed with Soli- taire early in his career but came around after the close call in the Plate Trial. But as 2008 ended he wasn’t sure if the cup he was holding was half full or half empty. “As a young horse we didn’t initially expect big things from him. He trained OK, but he wasn’t shiny or anything like that,” Clifton said. “But then as a 3-year-old we had some high expecta- tions for him. He ran credibly in Canada in the stakes but I really thought he had a chance to win them and then he didn’t get it done, so that was disappointing.” If on-the-board finishes in pricey stakes were disappointing, then Soli- taire’s ninth and sixth finishes in allow- ance races at Gulfstream to start 2009 were devastating. Bond and Clifton were perplexed and decided to regroup back in Canada. They sent Solitaire to Woodbine, where he was a last-to-first winner in an 10-furlong allowance on July 5. “The race at Woodbine was a con- fidence builder. Sometimes horses need to do well to get going again,” Clifton said. “We didn’t know it at the time, but he just didn’t like the heat down in Flor- ida. 40 Saturday, August 8, 2009 5. Who was your first interview? Your worst interview? Your best? Steve Asmussen became my favorite trainer to speak with. He was gener- ous with his time during or after the races and I think once I showed him that my eyes were astute he was willing to share some of his exper- tise. P.G. Johnson, Vinnie Blengs, James Bond, Richard Migliore, Edgar Prado, Rick Violette and farriers Joe and Bernie were always willing to chat. In Front My worst interview was with Bill Mott. It was my fault entirely. I basically barged into his of- fice, interupted him, and began throwing ques- tions his way. The lesson was clear. Knock on the door, ask if he has a moment, and if he doesn’t, try to find out what time would be more conve- nient for him. Hard working folks don’t have time for your to waste. The best thing about covering the races for The Special was that I got to hang out with the winners. Each day a new story, each day sur- rounding myself with smiles. Sean and I had a saying, “Root for obscurity,” we very much preferred when obscure connections would find EQUINE there way into the winner’s circle. No offense to Todd Pletcher, Bailey or Bill Mott, but when a gypsy trainer pulls off an upset, it makes for more colorful copy. I stumbled into some inter- esting stories about people and horses, rooting for longshots and underdog humans. INSURANCE

6. If you had to pick one boss, Joe or Sean? I never really looked at either as my boss. But I understood their demands as a small business owners, they needed me to be empowered. They didn’t have time to babysit me. The Special has SOLUTIONS been a success because Joe and Sean’s skills and strengths complement one another.

7. Would you do it again? Yes and no. Life has gotten more complicated – I just had a baby daughter in June and my ESPN responsibilites get more and more demanding each year. But as a retirement summer job, why not? My only regret is that I didn’t take more photos. I would consider returning and writing a piece daily about a photo, whether from the morning work- outs and barns or races or even events in town.

8. What was your, “Welcome to Saratoga” mo- ment? A bunch of The Special staff and a few of the jockeys got together for dinner on a Sun- day night in town. I remember distinctly how the one jockey just drank a plain vodka, sipping it slowly over the course of three hours and didn’t eat any dinner. He left us at about 11 p.m. That If you own, breed, board, train or race horses night at 1 a.m. while I was stumbling home through the park, a jogger in a metallic silver rubber suit zoomed past me. It was that same we share your passion. jockey, sweating off his evening. I had wrestled in high school, cutting weight for seven winters, and understood what a growling stomach can do for your short term morale. Here was this To locate an agent near you contact: industry legend, grinding it overnight. The next day was hot and muggy. When he got a leg up in the fourth race on a very live contender his eyes looked hollow and his cheeks were dormant. No- body else knew what he had to do to make 114 pounds. After a head-to-head stretch long battle and what seemed like and endless photo finish he had lost by a nose. He took a sip of water in the winner’s circle, swishing it around in his mouth until the water became warm, and spit it on the rubberized brinks. He faked a smile to me and disapeared into the maze of sun dresses.

9. Describe your living accommodations. My first year I lived 5 miles outside of town with some non-racetrackers, friends of friends. The commute killed my social life. I would wake at 1-800-THE-FARM 1-877-840-4400 5.30 a.m. and leave and get home around 10 p.m. at night. I don’t think I saw the homeown- www.farmfamily.com www.anpac.com ers more than three times all summer. Year two, I lived in the wedding cake on Union Avenue. The nickname works because at night when you drive past the house it’s all lit up like a wed- ding cake. The front porch was ideal for Sunday happy hours and each floor had its own outside We Take A Personal Interest — Protecting What You Value Most deck. It was walking distance to the track and to downtown, which was a dangerous combina- tion. I had a room with tall ceilings and shared a bathroom with three others in our house. “Hurricana: Thoroughbred Dy- nasty, Amsterdam Landmark,” a new book compiled by Louis F. Hil- debrant Jr., details the rise and fall of the Hurricana Stock Farm – a world- class breeding and racing operation in upstate New York. Also known as the Sanford Stud Farm for the family who owned it, Hurricana is no longer under operation. This book is a poi- gnant account of a local breeding farm that once thrived but no longer exists. John DeMarco of Lyrical Ballad finds Hildebrant’s book an appropri- ate read for racing fans because of the small track that was once a part of the Sanford’s land. Also, the setting of this book is in close proximity to the Sara- toga Racecourse – so close that DeMar- co mentions many of the horses walked from Hurricana to be raced at Saratoga.

Edward Hotaling’s book, “They’re Off! Horse Racing at Saratoga,” is an examination of the social and racing history of Saratoga Racetrack. Hotaling, originally from Saratoga, offers a detailed profile of America’s oldest sports venue. Readers will be immersed in the beauty, ex- citement and pageantry of historical Saratoga. DeMarco suggests this quotation, found on the back flap of They’re off!, summarizes Hotaling’s text most appropriately: Both sold by Darby Dan “They’re off! is a story about sports, the people, and the majestic thoroughbreds, and a story about America itself.” Hip 119 Filly In “Saratoga Stories: Gangsters, Gamblers, and Racing Legends,” author John Bartels showcases many historical by Forestry out of Entrusted personalities who once graced Saratoga.
