NEWS FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

The Full PC meets on the second Monday in the in the Cricket Pavilion (Village Hall in winter) at 7.30pm. The meeting is listed every month in the Village Post Office window, on the Notice Board at the Recreation Ground, and in Odsey near the station. A copy of the full minutes from the Council Meetings may be obtained by contacting the Parish Clerk, Sally Walmesley, Redwood Lodge, South Street, Litlington, Royston SG8 0QR. Telephone 01763 852137 or e-mail [email protected]. Minutes can also be viewed on the Steeple Morden Village Website www.steeplemorden.org and the Village Post Office. Discussion on agenda items from the March Council meeting on included the following:

Report from District Cllr Cicely Murfitt:  The latest edition of the South Cambs magazine has been published. There were concerns that it been put in a plastic bag. This was a temporary move to prevent political leaflets being inserted before the May elections  There is no further information on the planning application for the Station Road orchard site  It is requested that additional recycling rubbish be put into clear plastic bags so that operatives can see the contents thus preventing injury. Report from County Cllr Sebastian Kindersley:  A useful meeting had taken place concerning the proposed path between Steeple and Guilden with various options being discussed.  There is still concern over potholes which have worsened after the recent bad weather. Currently there are only funds for urgent work.  The road safety on the A505 is still a concern and Cllr Kindersley is due to meet with Herts County Cllr Jarvis and would hopefully receive an update on any future plans. Matters arising from and last meeting  Request for new litter/dog waste bins - Dr Belson was in contact with Heidi Duffet, South Cambs refuse supervisor.  The Guilden/Steeple footpath – permission was being sought from Highways to use the grass verge which would then need to be cut. Finances  The financial statement and bills were approved  The account with Anglian water re sewage charges was still frozen. Recreation Ground.  There had been an increase in litter over the half term break.  The soil on the mound in the play area was eroding but a RoSPA inspection is due in April where it is hoped advice will be given. It was considered low risk at present.  The clerk had passed on the PC’s suggestions to the football club re. grass cutting and were awaiting a response.  Quotes were to be obtained for cutting back the Leylandii trees by the village hall.  Enquiries were being made to the First Responder team about the maintenance of the defibrillator. Maintenance  There was to be another site meeting about footpath 28  Craft Way footway – the hedge needs to be cut back and this has been reported on the South Cambs website  Litter – The first litter pick at Odsey resulted in 18 bags of litter collected by 13 volunteers Dog Fouling There has been a marked increase in dog fouling especially along Station Rd to Ashwell Rd where children are often walked to school. The Clerk would obtain some signs to serve as a reminder. The Green Telephone Kiosk The hedge on the adjacent property would need to be cut back before the team of volunteers could begin painting the kiosk Correspondence An enquiry had been received about the Jubilee award which previously had been presented at the Harvest Fair. As there was to be no fair again this year it was suggested that it be presented at the Annual Parish Meeting and villagers were to be asked for nominations. Annual Parish Meeting 10th May 2018 The meeting would be held following the election. Mr Brocklehurst agreed to chair the meeting and the agenda would follow the usual format with the presentation of the Jubilee award to be made during the chairman’s report. Planning Applications  Ref S/0124/18/FL Northbrook End Farmhouse, North Brook End – demolition of existing barn and construction of 4 bedroom house Mr David Barrett. Deadline for responses had passed so no comment was made  Ref S/0715/18/TC 12 Cheyney St, Tree works to reduce3 crown on Beech tree by 50%. No objections, but it was to be pointed out that the residents also had responsibility for the overgrown hedge along the footpath.

Thank you! We would like to take the time to thank all of our family, friends and neighbours for all of the cards, help and support that has been offered, especially to Sue, after my accident back in January. I am getting on well and making a fast recovery, but I have a long way to go yet. And I would like to add from a personal point of view we have the best NHS in the world! Once again thank you all very much, it is deeply appreciated.

Smarties Pre-School & Out of School Club

Smarties News – September 2014

After 10 year’s involvement with the village Pre-School, Out of School & Holiday Clubs, I have decided to step down from my current position before the start of the new school year in September. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping to transform Smarties from being in a position of financial crisis with low attendee numbers (back in the days when we were based at the Village Hall) to the popular, financially viable and flexible community offering it is today.

Smarties now has an enviable reputation in this area, it employs 15 local people and currently supports the needs of well over 100 local families. Given the current size of this organisation, it now presents us with daily administrative demands in terms of HR, payroll, marketing, recruitment, liaising with parents, staff, Committee, the school, County Education Department and Ofsted. This is clearly too wide a remit for one person to juggle. Following my departure, therefore, the Management Committee has wisely decided to divide the various areas of responsibility into 3 roles: General Manager, Head of Pre-School & Head of Out of School/Holiday Club.

Head of Pre-School Emma Ward as a qualified & experienced teacher has the right skills to run the Pre-School on a day to day basis with Tracey Tustian deputising. The rest of the Pre-School team – Julie, Nikki, Zoe, Lisa, Rachel, Aleah and Claire, are all EYFS Level3 trained and will support in the care of the younger children. The contact for the preschool remains as: [email protected]

Joint Heads of Out of School Zoe Dickman and Georgina Dowley have equal training and experience in Play Work, and both bring positive ideas and practical skills to the Out of School and Holiday Club operations. Their team will be made up of Tracey, Julie, Kathy, Aleah and Lynda. The contact for the out of school remains as [email protected]

Administration All matters concerning billing, finances and funding have been managed brilliantly well in recent years by Nanette Hannon, and she is happy to maintain this position in the new organisation. The contact for anything pertaining to finances, bills and funding therefore remains as [email protected]

General Management The greatest part of my current role - and that which prevented me from doing what I love – i.e. looking after children - might be viewed as the management functions of a small business (which Smarties now is, albeit we are still a charity by name). It is therefore right that we take on someone new to do this role. Kate Reynolds, our former Chair, will therefore be taking up this position with immediate effect. The general point of contact for any queries to do with Smarties will be Kate, and she can be contacted at [email protected]. The telephone number for Smarties is still 01763 852888.

Finally, just a personal word to say that it has been a privilege to play a part in helping Smarties to achieve what it has to date. I have loved caring for your children, and getting to know and to help so many families. I trust that the whole community continues to be mindful of supporting the needs of our young ones. I would also like to wish the Smarties team every success for the future.

Thank you Debbie Littlefair
