How to Insert Images into Schoolwires Webpages You can insert images into your Web pages from a variety of sources, including the Internet, digital photos you’ve taken, or pictures that have been scanned in and saved to your computer. Click on the Insert Image button in the toolbar of the Site Manager. At this window make sure Select New Image ... is selected (for now) and click Next . Click on Browse to find the clip art image you want to use or upload 1. Browse to your saved image as you would if you were opening a file. NOTE: Images must be saved locally before they can be used with Schoolwires. Locally means the image must be on the hard drive, Server (ex. S drive), USB Flash drive, floppy disk, or CD. Images cannot be copied and pasted onto your Web page in Schoolwires. Navigate to the location of your image. Click on the file name and click Open . You will now see the path (location) of the image you’re going to upload. Click Next. Give your image ALT TEXT (Alternate text tells visitors what the picture is supposed to be if it doesn’t appear on their screen, which happens from time to time on individual computers). You should see your image in the right side of the next window. Choose Save Picture As… Navigate to a folder you’ve created in your staff folder or desktop and click SAVE . Go to the Schoolwires Site Manager, and open the page you want to insert the image. Some Websites offer copyright-free images and others do not. If an image is not copyright-free, you must obtain written permission from the copyright owner to re- post the image on your Web page. Just because an image shows up in the Google search DOES NOT mean it is copyright-free. IMPORTANT: You must have parental permission before posting pictures of your students on the Internet. Your lab assistant will have the computer use forms with this important information. Use tables with a border set to 0 to help with page layout. This will help to ensure that the text and image(s) will show up in the correct place when viewed using different browsers (i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, FireFox, Opera, etc.) Remember that your table’s total width should not exceed 550 pixels, and the total width of the individual cells within your table must equal that same 550 to maintain a normal appearance of the content layout on your Web page. .

Understanding Image Formats And When to Use Them Are you familiar with the extensions after your images? There are so many image formats that it’s so easy to get confused! File extensions like .jpeg, .bmp, .gif, and more can be seen after an image’s file name. Most of us disregard it, thinking there is no significance regarding these image formats. These are all different and not cross‐ compatible. These image formats have their own pros and cons. They were created for specific, yet different purposes. What’s the difference, and when is each format appropriate to use? Every graphic you see online is an image file. Most everything you see printed on paper, plastic or a t‐shirt came from an image file. These files come in a variety of formats, and each is optimized for a specific use. Using the right type for the right job means your design will come out picture perfect and just how you intended. The wrong format could mean a bad print or a poor web image, a giant download or a missing graphic in an email Most image files fit into one of two general categories—raster files and vector files—and each category has its own specific uses. This breakdown isn’t perfect. For example, certain formats can actually contain elements of both types. But this is a good place to start when thinking about which format to use for your projects. While using the Microsoft Office applications to create educational materials, we can easily find a vast assortment of clipart components ready to be integrated into any presentational format. Unfortunately, just as digital cable can offer its subscribers over 400 channels and still fail to air anything “worthy” of watching, Microsoft clipart can often miss the mark, if only by just a little bit. This leaves us with two options: 1. create our own clipart 2. customize what has already been created for us. This week we will choose option 2 and leave the custom creation of graphics for the next module. While the customization of clipart can be accomplished in Microsoft Word, Publisher or even Excel, we will be using PowerPoint to accomplish this task as it provides a little more freedom to move things around the way we will want them. Once you have started the PowerPoint application, you will need clear the default text boxes that appear on the initial slide. Open the Edit menu and choose Select All. This will select the current slide’s title and subtitle text boxes. Next press the Delete key on your keyboard. Now we will need some clipart on which to practice the customization process. From within the Insert menu select Picture and then select Clip Art from the secondary menu.
