    Church at Home Sixth Sunday of Easter 1 Before the Service Love one another Welcome to Church at Home for the sixth Sunday of Easter. In our service we will be exploring the theme of providing love and hospitality, especially to those who are viewed by mainstream society as not deserving God’s love. We are delighted to have as our president today the Right Revd Olivia Graham, Bishop of Reading, and that our reflection is given by the Venerable Canon Stephen Pullin, the Archdeacon of Berkshire. Huge thanks to everyone from across the diocese who has contributed ideas, prayers and action to this week’s Church at Home. You have made this service possible. In ancient times, on or Just before this (Rogation) Sunday, days of prayer and fasting were observed in Western Christianity. Ironically, one of the ancient customs also marked at this time is ‘beating the bounds’, during which parishes would go on a procession to protect public right of way from agricultural or other expansion. However, as someone said, if the Christian faith is instead compared to a dance, then our mission is for a constant expansion of the dancefloor, to include those on the margins. Our gospel reading calls us to a fruitful love of the other like Jesus does us - a love that’s in it for the long haul. The Jesus of the gospels lived at the edges of polite society. He was out in the wild untamed places of the community, as if in perpetual search for the ‘other’, the one who didn’t ‘belong.’ The Jewish leaders of his day, who considered his self-sacrificial vocation absurd, could not get their heads around such love.

    Associate Archdeacon of Berkshire From the Bishop of Reading If you are exploring a vocation to archidiaconal ministry – welcome! I am looking for a colleague in the Reading Episcopal Area who will share with me and the Archdeacon of Berkshire in the spiritual and practical leadership of God’s people in this vibrant part of the Thames Valley. Over the past few years, we have been encouraging shifts in the way we as a Church approach the task that God has entrusted to us. We are trying to move from being Church-focused to Kingdom-focused; from a narrative of scarcity to a narrative of abundant generosity; from a clerically-dependent church to one which celebrates the discipleship and calling of the whole people of God; from one which makes plans and tells God what they are, to one which listens to God, notices where and with whom God is at work, and then joins in. We are seeking to be a Church which is more Christ-like – more contemplative, more compassionate and more courageous for the sake of God’s world. This is our common vision. And it is also our strategy. In Berkshire, as elsewhere in the Diocese, this is being worked out through engagement with environmental issues, social justice, the building of new ecclesial communities in areas of new housing, engaging more effectively with our children and young people, and making personal discipleship plans available to each lay person. This is alongside encouragement to all of us to be more Christ-like Christians in our everyday lives, wherever they are focussed.

It embodies every aspect of contemporary Anglican parish life. Worship is rooted in the Eucharistic tradition but open to new exploration and ideas. The parish church is a historic centre of pilgrimage while the worshipping community in Jennett’s Park is emerging and enjoys the freedom which comes from not owning a building. Mission in the parish is about making the most of a large number of occasional offices alongside building new relationships with those who’ve recently moved to the area. Part of the job is building links across the whole parish, and part of it is being a key face of the Church on a new housing development, putting down roots, becoming known, being a pioneer. It’s a job which would perfectly suit anyone who wants the adventure of mission and ministry on a new housing development while also being rooted in a church which is flourishing through a traditional model of parish ministry. You will also be joining a varied and active Deanery in a healthy and lively Episcopal Area (which has appointed a new Bishop and a new Archdeacon in the last 8 months) in a Diocese which is well-resourced and excited to be exploring what it is to be called to be “a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world.” If all of this sounds exciting, then read on!
