Axis Blitzkrieg: Warsaw and Battle of Britain By Skyla Gabriel and Hannah Seidl Background on Axis Blitzkrieg ● A military strategy specifically designed to create disorganization in enemy forces by logical firepower and mobility of forces ● Limits civilian casualty and waste of fire power ● Developed in Germany 1918-1939 as a result of WW1 ● Used in Warsaw, Poland in 1939, then with eventually used in Belgium, the Netherlands, North Africa, and even against the Soviet Union Hitler’s Plan and “The Night Before” ● Due to the non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, once the Polish state was divided up, Hitler would colonize the territory and only allow the “superior race” to live there and would enslave the natives. ● On August 31, 1939 Hitler ordered Nazi S.S. troops,wearing Polish officer uniforms, to sneak into Poland. ● The troops did minor damage to buildings and equipment. ● Left dead concentration camp prisoners in Polish uniforms ● This was meant to mar the start of the Polish Invasion when the bodies were found in the morning by Polish officers Initial stages ● Initially, one of Hitler’s first acts after coming to power was to sign a nonaggression pact (January 1934) with Poland in order to avoid a French- Polish alliance before Germany could rearm. ● Through 1935- March 1939 Germany slowly gained more power through rearmament (agreed to by both France and Britain), Germany then gained back the Rhineland through militarization, annexation of Austria, and finally at the Munich Conference they were given the Sudetenland. ● Once Czechoslovakia was dismembered Britain and France responded by essentially backing Poland and Hitler responded by signing a non-aggression with the Soviet Union in the summer of 1939 ● The German-Soviet pact agreed Poland be split between the two powers, the new pact allowed Germany to attack Poland without fear of Soviet intervention The Attack ● On September 1st, 1939 Germany invaded Warsaw, Poland ● Schleswig-Holstein, a German Battleship at 4:45am began to fire on the Polish garrison in Westerplatte Fort, Danzig. -

Ze praten te snel, te slordig en vooral te monotoon, zo luidt de klacht. Zou dat wijzen op een verandering? Wordt de Nederlandse zinsmelodie inderdaad steeds vlakker? Twee onderzoeken bieden meer duidelijkheid. Ik heb twee zoons in de adolescente leeftijdsgroep, zo tussen de 16 en de 20. Toen ik ze nog dagelijks om me heen had (ze zijn inmiddels technisch gesproken volwassen en het huis uit), mocht ik graag luistervinken als ze in gesprek waren met hun vrienden. Dan viel op dat alle jongens, niet alleen de mijne, snel spraken, met weinig stemverheffing, en vooral met weinig melodie. Het leek wel of ze het erom deden. Een Amerikaanse collega, die elk jaar een paar weken bij mij logeert om zijn Nederlands bij te houden, gaf ongevraagd toe dat hij in het algemeen weinig moeite heeft om Nederlanders te verstaan, behalve dan mijn zoons en hun vrienden. Een paar jaar eerder was ik in een onderzoek beoordelaar van de uitspraak van 120 Nederlanders, in leeftijd variërend van puber tot bejaarde. Mij viel op dat de bejaarden zo veel prettiger waren om naar te luisteren. Niet alleen spraken ze langzamer dan de jongeren, maar vooral maakten ze veel beter gebruik van de mogelijkheden die onze taal biedt om de boodschap met behulp van het stemgebruik te structureren. -

DOUGlAS L. BENDELL AWARD THE STARVATION MYTH: THE U.S. BLOCKADE OF JAPAN IN WORLD WAR II CHRISTOPHER CLARY At 8:16 a.m., on August 6, 1945, the world changed. Fifty-seconds earlier, the Enola Gay had dropped an atomic bomb, "Little Boy", from 31,600 feet above Hiroshima, Japan. The world was ushered into the nuclear age. After seeing the "initial burst and 'ball of fire,'" co-pilot Robert Lewis questioned aloud, "My God, what have we done?" 1 Lewis, nearly six miles above the devastation, was responding to the pyrotechnic display. He could only imagine the very real damage the bomb had caused. While disagreements exist concerning the exact figures, it is undeniable that the bomb and its radioactive effects killed at least 70,000 people 2 Though he was one of the first to see its effects, Lewis was not the first to question the decision to use the atomic bomb nor would he be the last. The decision still sits at the center of one of the most debated historical (as well as historiographic) questions. The focus on this episode is justified. This singular event divides the Twentieth Century in numerous ways, but perhaps most relevantly it ends a hot and bloody war, and marks the beginning of a colder conflict. And since we examine the event in the year 2000, we must try to avoid the biases of the post-Cold War era. This paper tries to focus on two different realities: the first is what actually, really happened, the true state of affairs, then secondly the perceptions of that actuality. -

BACKGROUND: SETTING THE SCENE Today we begin a series of lectures on the law of armed conflict, which is also known as the law of war, international humanitarian law, or simply IHL. To begin, I’d like to take a guess at what you’re thinking right now. Some of you are probably thinking that this is an ideal opportunity to catch up on some well-earned rest. “Thank goodness I’m not on the assault course or on manoeuvres. This is absolutely marvellous. I can switch off and let this instructor ramble on for 45 minutes. I know all about the Geneva Conventions anyway – the law is part of my culture and our military traditions. Michael Moore: A Man on a Mission or How Far a Reinvigorated Populism Can Take Us Garry Watson (Cineaction 70) My focus in this essay will be on Michael Mooreʼs four documentaries – Roger and Me (1989), The Big One (1997), Bowling for Columbine (2002) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) – with most of my attention being given to the first and third of these, and least to the second. These four films are significant and worth studying for a number of reasons: (i) The size of the audiences they have succeeded in reaching; (ii) the political impact they have had (on which, among other things, see Robert Brent Toplinʼs useful book on Michael Mooreʼs “Fahreneit 9/11”: How One Film Divided A Nation [2006]); (iii) and the extent to which they helped prepare the reception for such recent political documentaries as, for example, Errol Morrisʼs The Fog of War (2004), Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbottʼs The Corporation (2005), Alex Gibneyʼs Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005), Eugene Jareckiʼs Why We Fight (2005), David Guggenheimʼs An Inconvenient Truth (2006), and Chris Paineʼs Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006). It may not be redundant to rehearse some of the facts. If Roger and Me was more successful at the box office than any documentary that preceded it, Moore went on to break the same record on two subsequent occasions – first with Bowling for Columbine, then with Fahrenheit 9/11. And as far as the latter is concerned, we get some sense of the excitement that was generated when it first screened in the US by the Foreword that John Berger wrote in 2004 for The Official “Fahrenheit 9/11” Reader (while the film was “still playing in hundreds of theaters across America”1). -

Conflict, Security and the Reshaping of Society This book is an examination of the effect of contemporary wars (such as the ‘War on Terror’) on civil life at a global level. Contemporary literature on war is mainly devoted to recent changes in the theory and practice of warfare, particularly those in which terrorists or insurgents are involved (for example, the ‘revolution in military affairs’, ‘small wars’, and so on). On the other hand, today’s research on security is focused, among other themes, on the effects of the war on terrorism, and on civil liberties and social control. This volume connects these two fields of research, showing how ‘war’ and ‘security’ tend to exchange targets and forms of action as well as personnel (for instance, the spreading use of private contractors in wars and of military experts in the ‘struggle for security’) in modern society. This shows how, contrary to Clausewitz’s belief that war should be conceived of as a ‘continuation of politics by other means’, the opposite statement is also true: that politics, insofar as it concerns security, can be defined as the ‘continuation of war by other means’. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, war and conflict studies, terrorism studies, sociology and international relations in general. Tracey, for his tireless commitment to my success. 1 ABSTRACT The purpose of this analysis was to discover the extent to which dictates of war theory ideals can be considered universal, by comparing the Western (European), Classical Chinese, and Islamic models. It also examined the contextual elements that drove war theory development within each civilization, and the impact of such elements on the differences arising in war theory comparison. These theories were chosen for their differences in major contextual elements, in order to limit the impact of contextual similarities on the war theories. The results revealed a great degree of similarities in the conception of warfare as a social tool of the state, utilized as a sometimes necessary, albeit tragic, means of establishing peace justice and harmony. What differences did arise, were relatively minor, and came primarily from the differing conceptions of morality and justice within each civilization – thus indicating a great degree of universality to the conception of warfare. -

QUALIFIED, BUT UNPREPARED Qualified, but unprepared: Training for War at the Staff College in the 1930s EDWARD SMALLEY University of Kent Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article aims to show the Staff College at Camberley was an elite establishment for officer training in name only; it failed to select the best candidates for entry and it failed to teach students how to undertake either routine duties or operations relevant to continental conflict. The syllabus lacked clarity of purpose whilst the learning environment was largely devoid of pressure. This compounded the institution’s small output which prevented the army developing a pool of elite officers which could monopolise command within future expeditionary forces. Consequently, in 1939, both Camberley and its individual graduates were unprepared for war. The passed Staff College qualification (PSC) was considered the pinnacle of an Army officer’s education. Recipients were expected to gain sufficient skills to perform all future command and staff duties to an unparalleled level of excellence. This article explores how these same elite officers were individually ill-equipped for future first- class conflict and, collectively, were even unable to dominate command positions within the small British Expeditionary Force sent to France in 1939-40. The Camberley Staff College was established in 1858 to address the obvious deficiencies in British Army staff work witnessed in the recent Crimean War. The institution was deliberately called the Staff College to emphasise its primary function of providing a formal staff education. The potential benefits of having qualified staff officers providing capable administration for the needs of a modern army were notably revealed by the success of the Prussian General Staff in the 1870s.
