All of the things that we see on television and read about in books and newspapers are vividly planted in our minds for us to decipher and do with what we will, to our advantage or to our disadvantage. In all of this downloading of exposure to the modern world, we tend to pick out people that we admire, that we wish we could be like, and that we might call our heroes. But how many of them are really worthy of our admiration or of our imitation or exhibit a heroic character that one might call Christ-like? Wouldn’t you want your hero to be an extraordinary person? Heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, are of all ages and kind, and might be living or dead. It is good to have those people in our lives who’ll help us work toward striving to be that better person, to have that better life, and who’ll inspire us to reach the ultimate goals that we seek to accomplish. -

Stika. More than a thousand people will be in attendance for this historic celebration and Rite of Dedication, including leaders of the Catholic Church representing the Vatican, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and more than a dozen archdioceses, dioceses, and Catholic communities as well as faithful from the Diocese of Knoxville’s 51 parishes and Catholic missions. The Mass marks the official opening of the Diocese of Knoxville’s first dedicated cathedral, located at 711 S. Northshore Drive in Knoxville. It will replace the current Sacred Heart Cathedral, built in 1955 and opened in 1956. Sacred Heart served as a parish church from Jan. 1, 1956, until Pope St. John Paul II established the Diocese of Knoxville in 1988 and then elevated Sacred Heart to a cathedral. The old cathedral building will be converted into a parish fellowship hall. Joining Bishop Stika for the Dedication Mass will be Cardinal Justin Rigali, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Cardinal William Levada, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan. All is Gift.” With words like these, part prayer, part sharing from experience, part theology, Tom Zanzig, 61, spoke at the annual Youth Ministry/Religious Education retreat for parish staff and religious educators from across the diocese. Sponsored by the Office of Lay Ministry and Formation, the Office of Youth Ministry, and the Office of Faith Formation on August 13, 2007, the day was for reflecting on ministry at the site of the Diocesan Spiritual Life Office, Mount Saint Joseph. Zanzig spoke about “The Rhythms of the Spiritual Life: The Path of Christ in Dis- cipleship.” Founder of Zanzig and Associates in Madison, WI, he is a popular work- shop and convention presenter in the areas of Youth Ministry, Religious Education, and Spirituality. Smith Washington, D.C. 2016 A Church Apart: The Catholic Church in the Rural South, 1939-1990 Seth R. Smith, Ph.D. Director: Leslie Woodcock Tentler, Ph.D. This dissertation examines Catholicism in the rural South to answer three questions. The first is how did priests and lay Catholics engage in a pluralistic American society before and after Vatican II while drastically outnumbered? The second is what did it mean to be part of the universal Catholic Church while isolated geographically, socially, and institutionally? Finally, how do we balance the impact of major national and international events on the Catholicism in the rural South with the importance of local context? This dissertation seeks to answer these questions by examining the history of seven parishes – four pastored by Glenmary Home Missioners and three pastored by non-Glenmarians – in the rural South between 1939 and 1990. Throughout much of the twentieth century, Southern Catholics were regarded with suspicion by their neighbors without the protections offered by numbers or their own confessional institutions. Catholics in the rural South dealt with this in two ways. The first was by emphasizing their Southerness. Apart from their religious beliefs, they were virtually indistinguishable from their fellow Southerners, and their views on politics, economics, and race hewed much closer to their non-Catholic neighbors than their co-religionists in the North. -
