1 2 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

For those of you who were able to read the Manawatu Standard article regarding the club published in June of this year, it provided a great summary of where the club has come from and how we currently operate. The article noted that with 2,620 members, we have the honour of been the country’s largest sports club, being split between nine codes, and including over 400 coaches, managers and administrators. It is them, and our sponsors I would really like to thank. Without your support in all sorts of ways the club, and all its codes could simply not function as we do. Special thanks goes to The New Zealand Community Trust, The Eastern & Central Community Trust, The Lion Foundation, The Higgins Group of Companies and to The Shamrock Club for your valuable support, it is much appreciated. From a governance perspective, the Council of Codes, made up of representa- tives from each of our codes, meet regularly throughout the year. The feedback from those meetings then inputs to the Marist Board, which meets approximately six times a year and provides oversight and support for the codes, but importantly challenges itself with the future of our club. In this respect, work has been undertaken at the moment to consider the clubrooms, the future development of those clubrooms, and the integration of Pascal Street site with sport in the Manawatu. The codes have and will continue to be asked to input into this process, and for those of you who are regular attendees, particular over the winter period, you will see that at times the clubrooms are full to capacity (A great challenge to have). Paul O’Brien assures me that there are not many times during the year when the clubrooms are not being used in some way, shape or form. Look out for the Chairmans cocktails, and the AGM, both of which will be held in November. The Chairmans cocktails function is a thanksgiving evening for those who administer and sponsor our codes. As usual, we will also be celebrating St Patrick’s Day, so if you have not been to one of these functions for a while, come along and enjoy the hospitality. My congratulations to all of the players in our sporting codes, many have enjoyed tremendous success during the last year, and in the junior codes as I have commented on previously our numbers are just outstanding! The future looks bright! Keith Wedlock Chairman

Please accept my sincere thanks for the kind words delivered on St Patrick’s Day. The way the presentation was organised and delivered, I believe, showed the professionalism our Club has attained. 5 THE SHAMROCK CLUB

The Shamrock Club membership helps create a funding pool to support Marist Sports and assist well performed Manawatu sportspeople to compete and/or gain experience at a higher level either in NZ or overseas or to obtain specialist coaching. This year we are very pleased to welcome new Shamrock Club members Mainfreight, NZ Coating Specialists, Fitwear, Gravitate 24 and Eyevet Services. Over the past year Marist codes received assistance in addition to Caleb Hansen (PNBHS Hockey), Laela Sae (Basketball), Kaitlin Watts (Squash) Zach Jaslarz, Matt Draper and Jamie Vos (Football), PNBHS 1st X1, Tuki Tukiterangi (Rugby) and Nitin Ahuja (Hockey). Contributions were also made towards the Annual Golf Tournament and Marist Club Cocktail functions attended by Shamrock Club members specifically the St Patrick’s Night and the Chairman’s Cocktail Annual Awards events. The St Patrick’s Night celebration this year was again well attended. It is always good to see our so many sponsors there with club officials. The Marist Club’s annual celebration will take place this year at the Chairman’s Cocktail function on Friday 6 November.

The 2015 Marist Golf Tournament in association with the Shamrock Club will be held on Sunday 15 November at the Manawatu Golf Club. Further details are available from Ezra or John Sullivan.

22015015 ClubClub Captain’sCaptain’s reportreport

The 2015 season has been a challenging yet very rewarding one. The club had planned to present 5 teams at the start to the season, but we consolidated our numbers to 4 teams, this ensured we didn’t put pressure on our sides to provide players each week. With The Senior side more than likely playing away from The Development side the extended numbers in each squad made it easier to manage numbers on game day. Both The Senior A’s and Development side made the top four play-offs; both sides were unlucky not making the respective finals. The Senior A’s were leading there semi until a 95 mtr intercept put them on the back foot and made them chase the game, which unfortunately led to their defeat. The Development side were leading in the 80th minute until the bounce of the ball lead to a try and extra time. Again in extra time leading till the final play of the game a controversial try gave their opponents victory. The Colts had a young side and showed glimpses of a side that could compete with the top sides. With over a dozen players of colts age playing in the top 2 sides the club would be able to field a very strong colt’s aged side. With Dave Wilson returning to coach next season I’m sure this young side will be better prepared in 2016. The presidents were again at their dynamic best especially off the field!!! This team is what all good clubs are about. Really well managed and approachable, the guys are like big brothers to all playing members in the club. I would personally like to thank both Lee Waller and Murray Joyce for their time and effort they have contributed to the rugby club. Lee has done a fantastic job as head coach of the senior side. He has helped develop the players and systems that will hold the club in good stead for years to come. Murray has been an outstanding manager, his organisation and professionalism has been second to none. Thank you to you both, true club men!! I would like to thank all the club players, coaches, managers, committee members, Sponsor’s and supporters for making Old Boys Marist Rugby Club as strong as it is. I would like to congratulate all our players who made rep teams. Higher Honours achieved in 2015: Manawatu 19’s: Matt Maoate, Shayden Osgood, Benedict Grant, Josh Greer. Manawatu Development: Ben Edwards, Dan Law, Isaac Gulliver. Coached by Reebo. Turbo’s: Antonio Kirikiri, Mark Atkins. Spilane tourney team: Chris Long. NZ Marist Colts: Sam Bergessen. Manawatu Under 16 Coach: Dave Wilson (Danger). Manager Gary Milligan. North Island Marist under 13 coach: Dave Wilson (Danger). Manager Mark Anderson.

Bring on 2016. Brett Davis

2015 began with much promise for the colts team. We had a infux of new players while older guys stepped up into the senior and development teams. We had the majority of players around the 18-19 year mark making us one of the younger teams around. We began with five wins in a row taking us to the top of the table and remaining there for some weeks. We had a spate of injuries, work commitments and then the usual bad weather for training nights meant that commitment levels fell away over the vital period of the season. The core group of committed players continued and finished the season with heads held high. The majority of the team are age eligible again next year and we have seen a influx of school leavers playing in our colts 7's team, which means again a strong colts team will be fielded in 2016. My thanks to Paul SHEEHAN and Warren CHAPMAN for their assistance during the season and the support of Brett DAVIS making the job for this first time coach that little bit easier. Dave Wilson OBM Colts

15 OOBMBM SSeniorenior BB’s/Development’s/Development XXVV 22015015

The 2015 Development XV underlines what is great about our club. An SOS went out after what was the senior B side disintegrated midway through the preseason and when the new coaching staff off Brett Davis and his technical advisers Kane Barry and Dave Waru took the reigns there were only 8 players left at training. A rag tag bunch of Senior Reserve’s, colts and school leavers soon came together to form what is now known as the Dee-Lo. Players of all sorts of ages and abilities were thrown together into a side that showed real COMPOSURE at key times!! Led by some experienced heads, like inspirational captain and forward of the year Pita Tua-Davidson, the younger and less experienced players soon found their feet and began to rip teams apart with power, skill and pace from young outside backs like Jordan Clark, our top try scorer and back of the year. Our Player of the Year, lock Matt Crosswell, was dynamic around the park, dominant in the line out and led the try scoring race for most of the season. After finishing second on the table, the season came to a heartbreaking end when going down in injury time of extra time in a thrilling semifinal to finish in 3rd place. Social cohesion was a buzz phrase in the squad and with some real characters like Dale ( Josh Greer) and Dobbo (Jeremy Dobson) on the job, it was evident early on this was a special group that was a pleasure to be around off the field and an honour to manage on the field. Dee-Lo team manager, Gareth Pringle

Overall we had a good year.. struggled at times for player numbers as did all the clubs. We fielded x5 teams each week P1 finished 4th in both the 1 day and 2 day formats. We had up to 6 players away when Manawatu Reps played, so the P2 players stepped up to fill in. P2 struggled as they were filling in for the P1 TEAM – We have a large number of younger players who are coming through the club. The future is looking good for the club. P3 team lead by Mike had an enjoyable year. These guys are a bunch of friends and really enjoy their cricket. P4 we had x2 teams in this 20/20 competition both fared well with one team winning the grade. Cheers Grant

2015 was an productive year for us with four of the six teams we have making the semis. They remained unbeaten for 15 games giving them the Challenge Cup to hold on to for the season, Collinson Cup for finishing with the most points, Most Improved team in Hockey Manawatu comp and AJ Scott got the Coaches Rose Bowl. This was also our first year of having a Division One Women's team, we now have teams in all Divisions in the Manawatu comp. We had twelve Players with personal achievements, Josh Scott and Craig Hillborne played for Wanganui, Chris Herbert, Guido Cousins, Nitin Ahuna and Steffan Fastier for Manawatu in the Central Hockey League. Nitin also made the Central team along with Nick Chong who made the New Zealand Defence Force team and they both played in the National Hockey League. Jake Beeman made the Central Under 18s, Sarah Angland Under 18s Bs and Hannah Williams Under 15s Bs. Matt Hunter and Kyle Craven made the under 21s for Central. Congratulations to all. 33 TENNIS

The Marist Tennis Club revelled in another successful season in the 2014/15 summer. From operating a very popular Hot Shots programme for the new players through to impressive interclub results, and capping it off by winning the supreme award at the Tennis Manawatu prize giving. The Saturday morning Hot Shots programme caters for children aged 5-12 and develops their skills to ready them for future interclub play. The parents get involved each Saturday, helping set up, picking up the balls, and supporting the Coaches. It produces such an energetic environment and we are able to boast some of the highest numbers in the region with our programme. The Hot Shot Coaches did an awesome job again this year. The Junior and Senior interclub teams continued off where they left the previous season, producing consistent results each week with many of our teams featuring in the semi and final play-offs. All of the teams were extremely well managed and the parental support was an important ingredient to the team’s results. Congratulations must go to Hannah Sutherland-Smith, Ella Marshall, Kate Waterland and Garfeild Mwarehwa, who made the representative teams throughout the season, with a special mention to Hannah who gained Central Districts selection and attended the National Teams Event. We are very proud of your efforts. We have been advised by Tennis Manawatu that there is going to be a slight increase in the affiliation fees, so it will be important for the incoming committee to examine our fee structure, and adjust accordingly. The survival of our Club is still reliant on grant money and a “Big Thanks” must go to the Shamrock Club for their donation. This was gratefully received and will be used to engrave our trophies, and to Paul O’Brien and the Marist Sports Club for their support and assistance in applying to the New Zealand Community Trust for court hire, tennis balls, and senior coaching. We were successful in receiving the grant from the NZCT and sincerely thank them for their valuable and necessary assistance. It must be mentioned that the results only come from a superb team effort. I must specially “thank” Karen Hennessey, Leanne Judd, Angela McEwen, Phil McNamara and he rest of the team, for it is these people that deserve all the praise as they have put in so much work and contributed much of their time. Sadly, Karen, Leanne and Angela are moving on, and from the bottom of our hearts we “Thank you” for the contribution to our Club. You will be sorely missed. Special praise must go to Leanne who won the Supreme “Administrator of the Year” Award, totally deserved and due recognition for a job that was so expertly one for a long period of time. Finally, we are proud to be a fun, family based club. I wish all the best for the club next season, knowing that we, the Marist Tennis Club is “shining bright” in the Tennis world and the sporting community of Manawatu. 36 NETBALL

Netball has had yet another successful season. We had 10 teams this year, and plenty of interest from other players and teams wanting to join the club. A great sign that we are the club people want to join. We held our annual pre-season netball tournament, our biggest fundraiser for the year. Which pulled in over 30 teams from far and wide, and is looking like it will be even bigger next year! It's a great tournament for teams to try combinations and game plays before the actual netball competitions start. All 10 teams did extremely well this year. With 3 teams in finals, one winning their final, and a few teams winning round one and moving up a grade and then going on to finish in the top four. The club also held some social events for the teams, which were the amazing race and also a quiz night. Most teams got in behind these events and had some really interesting dress themes. Prizegiving was a great night, with the theme of 'Back to School' which saw everyone digging deep in the back of the wardrobe to find their old school uniforms. Players, partners, coaches, umpires and supporters celebrated the night with dinner, a few drinks, dancing and a bit of karaoke. We had team awards for Most Valuable, Most Improved and Fair Play then the Club Award winners for 2015, these are listed below. I would also like to make a special mention about our club patron, Beth Quigan, she is still strongly apart of Marist Netball for 40 years now, and this saw her receive Life Membership with Marist and Beth also received Life Membership from Netball Manawatu. We must also say a massive thank you to our sponsors, Martin Beveridge Ltd, Scullys, Fitwear and Gravitate Gym and also to pub charity. Without them we wouldn't be able to provide for this many teams and keep the club growing. Also thank you to the committee who have helped organize and run events and helped keep the club running smoothly. And also to those who coached teams this year, thank you for giving your time to do so. We look forward to an exciting 2016 season. Cheers Sam Roberts Club Captain

37 38 39 40 41 JUNIOR RUGBY

2015 was another great year for Marist Junior Rugby. With 326 players over 21 teams we were once again the largest club in town. Running a club this size is a huge task. Every year we endeavor to keep our subs the same as they have been for the last 10 years. This would not have been possible this year without the support of our major sponsors. McDonalds have sponsored our Player of the Day certificates, Mainfreight supported Club Day, Prize giving and also sponsor our annual Marist 7’s tournament. This year NZ Specialised Coatings have come on board and their contribution has been greatly appreciated. If you have the opportunity to support these local businesses please do so as they play an important part in the success of our club. Once again, we are only as strong as our fabulous volunteers. Our coaches and managers who tirelessly give of their time to their teams are the backbone of our club. This year we farewell Stu Fleming who has been a coach with Marist since 2007. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and wish you all the best in your rugby coaching endeavours. We also must thank all the parents, grandparents, guardians and extended family who get players to trainings and games and provide encouragement on the sidelines. Your commitment to your players is vital to our success. Thank you also for supporting our Marist Hoodies this year. Over 270 players and several adults are now sporting our distinctive hoodie. Personally I enjoy turning up to Ongley Park on a Saturday morning and seeing a sea of black hoodies with the large Marist ‘M’ on the front. For those of you who missed out they will be available again at registrations next year. Congratulations to all teams on a successful season. Unfortunately the weather has not really been too kind to us, a large number of cancellations this season. For some teams this year has been very character building, not many wins but lots of opportunities to grow and learn. It is important to remember that one of the goals of junior rugby is about learning the skills you need to progress your rugby once you get to High School. Opportunities to developing your skills and your sportsmanship happen at every level regardless of the score at the end of the game. But most of all we want you to have fun and enjoy your rugby. A big thank you to the fabulous committee. It is no small task to run such a big club and the efforts of this hardworking group is to be applauded. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into making us the best club in town. To our players who are leaving to go to High School next year, we wish you all the best as you embark on your new school adventure and am sure the skills and sportsmanship you have learnt at Marist will hold you in good stead for your high school rugby career. We look forward to seeing you back once you finish high school at Old Boys Marist. To all our returning players for 2016, have a great summer enjoying your summer sports and holidays. We look forward to seeing you in March next year for registrations. Cheers Mark Andersen Marist Junior Rugby Chairperson

44 Marist U6 Green It’s been a very challenging and rewarding season for coaches Mike and Luke this year. The mix of players, ages, talents and concentration has been vast however the team has evolved into a good unit with lots of improvement from all the children. We had a similar team this year with a few of the players remaining in the under six grade. It was great to see them back. The new players, including a couple of four years olds, joined the team to make up a squad of 12. We ran half the season with only a lineup of nine players actually taking the field on game day. The others turned up each week, however they took a while to feel confident enough to get out and play. Coaching persistence and encouragement got those unsure players onto the field eventually. Thanks to the caregivers for continuing to bring them along so that the coaches had the opportunity to get them involved. Mike and Luke picked up some very helpful tips and activities during the Coaches training at the start of the season. It helped the coaches engage the children and keep their interest in playing along with a great deal of development. At this stage all our players look to return next year along with Mike and Luke’s commitment to coach. Many thanks to Marist for their support this season, our sponsor and the parent’s commitment to turning up to coaching and games each week. The team has had a great season, lots of laughs, tears and enjoyment. Both players and coaches are an improved team since the start of the season. Mike Singleton – Head Coach Luke Jurgens – Assistant Coach

Marist U6 White This year’s team was a group of new comers aged from 4 – 6 years. Our first goal as coaches was to help our players understand the rules of the game and how the game is played. This didn’t take too long and very quickly the older players took the lead and the younger ones followed. From this point we were able to change our coaching focus to the other skills of ripper rugby. It was great to see the confidence grow in our players – this was more obvious once they got their first try or rip. All of our games were really close in score. As the season progressed, we were more competitive and confident and came out with many more wins. We both enjoyed coaching these young players this season and see them progress over the season. We would firstly like to thank New Zealand Specialised Coatings (Todd Collins) for your sponsorship and great team jackets. Thanks to Alana for running the subs each week and to all the parents for their help throughout the season and our supporters for being there each week. Anthony Stephenson & Stu Balfour

45 Marist U6 Black This year’s team consisted of 4 returning players from 2014 and 9 newcomers. The returning players were very helpful in teaching the new boy’s the basic skills of Ripper. We were very lucky to have not only a fantastic group of boys but also a fantastic group of parents. The parents did a great job getting the boys to practices and games and were always very willing to help out. It certainly made coaching the team a lot easier. Thank you. All involved have shown a great respect to the opposition players and supporters. The boys have played hard but they have always played fair. Tommy – A big improver. Smiles galore!! A pleasure to coach. Alex – Energy to burn and deceptive pace. Jarrod – Great ball carrier. In space hard to catch. Ryder – Straight hard runner with a fast pass. Nate – Sidestep that made the refs fall over! Real pace (like his dad). Koen – Great team player with a positive attitude. An awesome ripper. Monty – A leader of the team and our best support player. James – Another player that improved and gave us plenty of laughs. Wiremu – A silky runner with huge potential. Taylor – Our most committed ripper with a fearless streak. Nathen – Well liked member who kept his coach honest. A very good ripper. Lachlan – Dynamic runner with an eye for a gap. A great positive attitude. Tahu – a great runner of the ball. Once he’s away you won’t catch him. Thanks to all the sponsors and the work the committee does behind the scenes. Brett Davis

Marist U6 Gold Well after 35 years I'm back coaching and the season has been awesome. I wasn't sure how it would go but the Marist U6 Gold team have amazed me. It was extremely hard to select just 1 or 2 special players from our line up as each week they all shone like real gems in their own way. What has blown me away was how eager the players are to please the coach, they are all very responsive to requests even if they haven't always got their ears on. I have liaised with the parents as I have had to be quite firm in keeping them focused 100% of the time but I have to remember they are only 5-6 years olds. The parents have been very supportive of the way I have coached and I don’t have any knowledge of any being upset. I don’t have any real special mentions as such but I do have the following comments: Ace Taufoou – Ace has some real skills developed. He has started the and weave in the last few weeks and is very fast for a big unit. It will be a hard choice to choose where

46 he should play as he would make an excellent forward, a great No7 or even a back. He has his head in the game and knows whats required. You can tell he has played before and has an involvement in sports outside of the game. Atutahi Sikanen – Atu started the season getting knocked around and wanting to go off all the time because of this. He has worked thru this and even though he is small he wants to be right in the thick of the action going for the rip. He just has to keep his ears on all the time and stay inside the cones. I am impressed with his ability to shake of the knocks and get right back in there over the past 3 games. Avai-Jack Faimatai Pritchard – AJ is part of a trio. He is also very fast and does his best to listen and responds well to instructions most of the time. You can tell he plays quite a lot of ball and it shows. Bailey Baker – Bailey is slight of build but give him the ball and he knows what to do. His fathers involvement outside of game shows thru which is a great asset to him. Cody Clarke – The Codestar. Once Cody is in the game and he gets the ball he has scored. Next year we can try and find ways of keeping him focused on the game. Connor Fraser – For a 5yr old Connor is not scared to run the ball and always has the try line in his sites. He is tall for his age but knows how to run, pass and work the ball. Cornelius Pritchard – Cornelius the second part of the Trio. He does his best to listen and all he wants to do is get the ball and run. He is starting to develop some skill, is fast and you can see he has a lot of ball outside of the game. Jackson Te Amo – Jackson I think with his older brother and family involvement outside of the game really shows thru. He will make a great No8, he is quick agile and can run. His ball skills are great Javon Faleni-alosio – JV is a great boy, the third part of the Trio. JV needs work to keep him focused on the game and his ears on all the time. He has the ability, the skills for his age, ball time outside of the game with the rest of the Trio now we need to work on him being a team player. Mitchell Allen – Mitchell is a great all rounder and his older brothers obviously spend lots of ball time with him which shows. He knows what to do and gets on with the job. Montgomery Jarrett – Monty has amazed me because he doesn’t get much ball time outside of the game which I will need to work on. Given he started the season with no real skills he has caught on really quick, he is a team player, knows how to score trys. He will be quite a stocky unit as he grows so I’m thinking he be great up front. Rebecca MacDonald – Becs has ball time outside of the game, she has some natural talents. She knows how to run and score, she is not scared to mix it with the boys. Lucas Andrew-Bilton – Lucas is fast, has outside the game ball time which shows with his older brothers. Once he’s got the ball he has only the try line in site. He can duck and weave it will be good to watch him develop. All in all the season has been an eye opener to me, I faced it with trepidation but each player has given me joy. If we do another season it will be good to work on their team skills and getting them working together. It has been frustrating trying to remember they are only U6’s but all in all I’m really impressed with the way they have grown together, they are a great team and should have a bright future together. My support coach and managers have being awesome, they have taken the pressure off me, organized behind the scenes and kept us running as a well oiled team. Regards Owen

47 Marist U6 Red This has been the first year of Rippa Rugby for the whole team including the coach. So we have all had to learn new things, have fun and come together as a new team. We have 13 awesome players in our squad, Blake, Dante, Iziah, Josh, Kase, Milan, Oliver, Poppy, Riley, Tobey, Zac P, Lennox and Zachary. We have a good mix of ages which included 5 four year olds at the start of year (2 of them are now 5). It also took the coach a couple of weeks to learn all of the players names. A few of the kids adapted straight into rippa rugby and the rest took a little bit of time to find their feet. However, as each practice and game went by, our players have grown in confidence with themselves, their skills of ripping and running, their team members and their coach. I am very proud of our team and they should all be proud of themselves and what they have achieved during the rugby season. A big congratulations to all of the players in the team, thanks to all of our supporters (mums, dads, grandmas, granddads, uncles, aunties, brothers and sisters), a special thanks to our manager Kate, our team sponsor ProGear, and Mark and the committee at Marist Junior Rugby. Nathan

48 Marist U7 Green 2015 has been a rewarding year with a great team of twelve players. Six of the team were new to ripper with the remaining having played in the under 6 grade in 2014. At the time of writing the team is unbeaten for the 2015 season. The team also had great support from the parents, in particular Anna Stephenson (manager) and Todd Collins (backs and forwards coach) and its key sponsor, NZ Specialised Coatings Limited. The boys bring a mix of abilities and talents to the field, which make us a good all round team week in week out. All the boys have had a great attitude and have been a pleasure to coach with every player improving their skills considerably. The teams’ attitude, it’s successes and the dedication shown by the parents, coaching and management personnel have all combined to create an enjoyable team culture. This year the best player goes to Quinton Vunipola. Quinton scored the highest points in a system designed to reward players by the weekly allocation of points for key skills displayed on the field. The most improved player Olly West, highest try scorer was Jonty Williamson. One of the key objectives for the season was to have fun and have everyone involved. Other than the weather the coaching team have thoroughly enjoyed the 2015 season and look forward to being involved with the boys in the future. Astie

Marist U7 White

2015 has been a good season for U7 White. We started the season with a few first time rugby players they have progressed throughout the season. All of the team have put in loads of effort, by getting to training, to the games been hungry to get hands on the ball and score some fantastic tries as well as some very strong defense. A group of the boys Jericho, Keiran, Dylan, Jayden, Nos and Te Ariki scoring the majority of the tries during the season using their speed evasive running and stepping. The rest of the team Keira, Mason, Edward, Cooper, Christian and Tai also contributing to the team scoring tries in various games and making huge try saving rips/ tackles. It has been a pleasure to coach these young players and see the improvement throughout the season and look forward to coaching again next season. Thanks to Marist Junior Rugby Committee for all their hard work and support throughout the season. Also a big thanks to all the parents for getting kids to training and games and positive sideline support of the whole team. Well done team look forward to seeing you all on the field next season. Stu 49 Marist U7 Black The Marist U7 Black team comprised a group of very enthusiastic first time Rippa players (and Rippa Coach) so we had to learn fast. We started with the very basics of how to catch & pass! Our team is a little unique in the Rippa competition, given that nearly half our team are girls (6 boys and 5 girls). The girls have been the top try scorers for us this season. Everyone in the team managed to score tries - it was great to see some beaming faces when the kids scored their first try, and that included the proud parents. We won as many games as we lost, with the kids loving every Saturday morning game. As the season progressed, the kids learned some great skills - ball handling, evasive running and great ripping techniques. Towards the end of the season, it was great to see techniques we worked on at practice finally come through in the game on a Saturday. This was evident with our team often gaining possession after 6 rips & managing to score within our own 6 rips. Thank you to all the parents/grandparents/aunties and caregivers involved, for getting the kids along to trainings, cleaning the kids gear and bringing the vocal support on a Saturday. A special thanks to Blake for stepping forward and helping coach the kids, and to Tash for being our weekly score keeper! And finally, thank you to Brett at Kernow Construction for sponsoring our team! Alastair Cadzow

Marist U8 Green The boys, parents and their families had a fun (first year of tackle) rugby year. At the time of writing: Played: 8 Won 5 : Lost 3 Tries for: 87 Tries against: 48 We ended up with a team of 14 boys of which 5 came through from our Under 7 team last year. Alazay - a gutzy player that improved as the season went on. Good runner of the ball. Amarni - a wonderful runner with ball in hand, became a real star in the team from the start. Fast! Ashton - improved massively, scoring some great tries. A great pick and go player from the ruck.

50 Benjamin – “Most Improved Player” last year – who stepped up. Stunning runner/ sidestep. Gutsy! Charlie – our top try scorer again this year. A dynamic player in all respects. Set our backs up well. Durie – took on the hooker role and played exceptionally well in forward play. Great tackler! Jonti - improved so much, becoming our halfback with a great pass. Aggressive in contact. Great step Kieran - an exceptional runner. Fast! Scored some sensational tries out wide this year! #2 for tries. Kyle – improved a lot this year, bagging a couple of tries and tackling well later in the season. Mason – a great tackler and all round rugby player who you could always rely on to play well. Manu – just got better and will be a real star next year. Hard to bring down when he is away. Mikaele – improved so much. Started to use his size to his advantage. A real team player. Sam – Joined his brother ½ way through the season. A great footy player – a joy to have. William – Joined his brother ½ way through the season. Improved so much, one to watch next year. Thanks to all our supporters this year. Thanks to our Team Sponsor – Burger King via Karl Gill (KSG Corp), who provided Player of the Day/ Tackler of the day & Special Mention vouchers, trophies. Property Noise (www.propertynoise.co.nz) purchased Camlebak drink bottles for all the boys and our practice hit shields. We always had a positive group of supporters on the sideline: engaging and passionate about the team, the fun they were having and the results they produced. Karl also sponsored our Team Trophy which we started last year which features yearly results etc... as we go through the grades. Win/losses, results are an important part of the game – we always played to win and we always took a loss with dignity. Practices were attended so well (we practiced right through the school holidays) which enabled to us to create some real structure to our game. We spent a lot of time on drills which really paid off, allowing the boys to play with a lot more confidence and just have plenty of fun game days. Never underestimate what 6 – 8 year olds can do, their ability to learn and then action is incredible. Thanks boys/parents/family for a fun season… the most fun I have had in three years of coaching. It was a privilege to be your coach. Mark Ferguson, Coach

51 Marist U8 White First year of tackle rugby and the Marist White U8 got straight into it. It was a big step up from Ripper but everyone was up to the challenge. The season has been a mixture of results, played 9 won 5 and lost 4. Highlights of the year - the willingness of the boys to learn and the support of the wonderful parents. Special thanks to Gareth, Damien, Anne-Marie and Chris for the help they've given on and off the field. Jack Ellison - MVP an absolute amazing season, highest try scorer and an outstanding tackler, look for Jack at RWC 2031. Alex Gordon - Tackler of the year, fantastic tackling be it in the front line of defence or covering deep behind the line, great tackling Alex. Harry Skelsey - Most Improved, both running and tackling the development has been huge, well done Harry. Whilst we had to award the team prizes the rest of the boys were amazing as well. Our new players Case and Jerome have just grown and grown, Jerome's straight running and hard hitting will rain fear into teams in the future. The twinkling feet of Kase will leave (has left) many a defender grabbing at thin air. Henry, Ethan and Kyle along with Jack, Harry and Jerome formed a formidable forward pack. Their ability to supply good clean ball for their backs was fantastic. As the season went on the boys got better and better at cleaning out over the ball and when we did this our rugby looked beautiful. Charlie, Alex P, Shea, Ryder along with Kase and Alex G made up our slick back line. Clean crisp passing from Charlie and Case along with the straight running of Ryder created many opportunities for the nippy Shea and Alex out wide. Thanks for all the support parents, thanks for another great year boys and I look forward to 2016. Blair

Marist U8 Black It has been an interesting ride for Marist U8 Black this season, a big step up from Ripper but everyone was up to the challenge. The tackle box seasons and support from the club was highly appreciated as a new coach and the boys relished in the interaction with the senior players. As the team formed and parents began to engage with the team additional coaching support was provided by Mark Kitchen and Tony Johnston who took the lead as the season developed. Our team focus was on developing and building the passion for the game and essential team work to build on in the years

52 to come. The basics such as tackling and ball movement across the line all progressed along with on field decision making and team work in defence and developing tries. The season has steady improvement in tackling and field positions end with fluid movement of the ball from the forwards and across the backs. MVP - Conrad Millan - highest try scorer and an outstanding tackler Best Tacker - Ryan Block - fantastic tackling in the front line of defence and covering deep Most improved - Dazaray Reedy – leadership, running and tackling the development has been huge As a first time coach and team manager I found the season tremendously rewarding, watch the boys develop and side line support of parents. The task seamed daunting to start with and facing tackling after 30 yrs of not been tackled even more challenging – however I have really enjoyed the opportunity and encourage all and any parent to get involved. Thanks for all the support parents, thanks for another great year boys and I look forward to 2016. Gary

Marist U9 Green My thanks go out to lots of people regarding this great team of ours, The Mighty Marist Under 9 Green! First and foremost, we’d like to say a big thanks to the Marist Rugby Club for their great organisation of the season. Thanks also to the members of the coaching team: Carl Taopua - Head-Coach, Mike Trail - Assistant Coach & Karen Willis - Team Manager. Thanks to all the fabulous parents of our team. Coaches’ jobs are made so much easier with the help & support of parents during the practices, and warm-ups, as this makes the managing of 16 players more effective & streamlined. Parents are the back bone of all great sports teams – Preparing our kids for practice & games in the weekend, organising their rugby gear, mouthguards & drink bottles, not to mention the oranges each week. The valued positive support on the side-line during the game, and encouragement before & after each game Now the greatest of all thanks go out to our Team.....”Mighty Marist U9 Green”....thanks to: Position/Name Season Reveiw Hooker - Jordon Brown The human battering ram-great breakthrough player Hooker - Joshua Taopua Powerhouse tackler & Enormous work rate Prop - Lara Carson Physical in defence and strong in forward play

Our team has played so well over this season - being the 2nd year in tackle, the boys got straight into the season head on. We’ve seen great teamwork throughout the season, and positive play in the spirit of gamesmanship. The progression to fending has worked well, and the players are beginning to gain confidence in this area. Support play, ball & tackling skills have been improving week by week, with a great team spirit to help each other both on & off the field. All team members have taken their turn at being our Impact players, coming on at the end of each quarter to boost the side and combine as a complete team should. The fitness of the players throughout the year, increasing confidence and the “never give up” attitude in every practice & Saturday game have made Marist Green a successful team this season, and I can see this team of players progressing on in the years to come to be Manawatu’s greats. Marist U9 Green parents / kids & coaching team - awesome effort & great season!

54 Marist U9 White 2015 has been a great season for the boys in Marist U9 White - it is their 2nd year of tackle & they have all really stepped up a level from last year. The boys always trained & played with our mantra in mind - "be your best, never give up & have fun" - as a result strong performances followed. With a couple of games still to go in the season the team has had just one loss & one draw. We gained 5 new boys this season, who have blended into our team well. Right from the first game the boys demonstrated tenacity on defence (especially on their goal line) & elusive running on attack. They have learned about the value of good tackle technique, straight running, ball security, accurate passing & body position in contact - skills learnt last year, that they have improved on this year. Their passing is one skill that has really come on, distributing the ball, & working well as a team. Our season couldn't have been successful without the positive support &encouragement of all the parents, grandparents, family & friends on the side-lines, also getting the boys to games & practices on time. Thanks again to our Marist Junior Rugby Committee, who give up their time so that our jobs as coaches are made easier. Our thanks to Mark, Paula, Vanessa, Brenda, Nadine, Trace and Lisa as well as all the other people behind the scenes who do such a great job for the club. We'd also like to thank Justin and Keli Leck at McDonalds for their sponsorship of 'Player of the Day'. The boys love the recognition of being chosen as Player of the Day, with the certificate being a great keepsake, & the treat being a great reward for a good game. We look forward to seeing the boys back again in 2016 ready to develop their skill levels and do the Green and White of Marist proud yet again. Willie Furnell & Paul Humphries.

55 Marist U9 Black Coach: Dean Assistant Coach: Carlo Team Manager: Alicia Marist U9 Black has had a year most coaches would soon rather forget on paper, we have won 2 games all year but this doesn’t represent the heart and commitment put in by everyone involved this year from coaches to parents to supporters to especially the kids involved. Due to a number of factors we were a largely new team, with only a few players from last years team. One huge advantage to a team of newbies is the rate at which they improve, like ripper and the first year of tackle you see some stand out improvements from kids every game played and every training had. We also had several of our kids not start at the start of the season and we were already 4 or 5 games in when we received 3 of our current players. Size played a factor in training and game strategy to we were a very small team players wise and really had to look at how to spread the ball fast and use the speed and fending abilities of our guys to our advantage. Massive effort and time was put into passing and receiving and getting the boys to really focus on knowing their limits and the importance of clean timed offloads. Hugely proud of the boys, really worked on the positives of every game and score became something not brought up after matches it was always about what they did well and what they needed to improve on. Had 2 of our last games with parents giving standing ovations and cheering team off the park as it was clear they played well above their supposed level on paper, passing, tackling, straight line running, low drives for the line, body positioning, offloads, footwork all worked on and just improvement every game. We have again 2 or 3 kids that have really sparked up in the last few games like I had last year where the light goes on and they are away. It is a testament to the boys on how they have stepped up and improved to higher levels individually. Dean

Proud sponsors of Marist Junior Rugby Marist U10 Green With the season coming to an end it feels like it struggled to even get going with cancellations, an early bye and school holidays all adding to the frustration of the season. All players from the previous year came back again hoping to carry on with the same enthusiasm and that they did. All of these boys are great kids to work with and seem eager to listen and learn as they are getting older, although like all ten year olds listening can be a bit of a task sometimes. There are some really talented boys starting to play some really good rugby at the moment which has been very good to watch and with next year being a move up to 15 aside rugby it will be pretty good to see these boys playing in certain positions. Another good season has come to an end and we all look forward next year. Thanks to Marist junior rugby for your help and support. Cheers Jason, Marcus & Dave

Marist U10 White We started (and finished) the season with 16 players, of which one third were new to our club/team and some new to rugby altogether. Lots of new names for the coaches to try and remember. The season got off to a great start this year with a good win over one of the new Feilding teams. This gave the team a great deal of confidence. It was rewarding to see the progress of the team throughout the year as their understanding of the game grew. This was especially the case in a couple of games where tactics that were coached at training were then carried out successfully in the following game. If only it could happen every week! We had some players who were extremely committed and turned up to every training and game, a great commitment by them and their parents. We had a large squad so lots of ½ and ¾ games were the norm, but everybody accepted that it was fair for everyone. When it came to team awards there were probably 3 players who were vying closely for each of these. But we can only pick 1 winner for each award. We look forward to another great season with the boys next year. Brendon O’Connor, Mike Moleta & Nigel Paul, Coaches

57 Marist U10 Black Marist Under 10 Black Venture Thoroughbreds started out with 15 eager players, and finished the season with 14. We carried over 8 of last year’s players, and inherited 6 new players, some who, this being their first year playing rugby. The new players didn’t take long to get to grips with the game. The fear of getting hurt was quickly forgotten. I think this was because of being part of the team and having to do the job for their mates, plus the old members of the team made them feel welcome and showed the way it was done. This was pleasing to see, and made good spectating when they performed as a complete team. A couple of the new players to the team this year were girls, Kyann Williams and Traest Mafile’o. I did not know how this was going to be perceived by the rest of the boys, however they fitted in well, and more importantly the boys accepted them without any hassles. I think this was mainly due to both girls scoring tries in the first game, so they had to match or better their efforts on the field. To date this season hasn’t been a successful one on the field having drawn one game and losing the rest. This hasn’t bothered me, as the performance has far out weighed the loss. The most important thing was that they didn’t drop their heads, but battled on until the final whistle producing some nail biting moments for the Mums and Dads. Every game that has been played to date has been with courage and commitment. All be it, the team has gone in spits and spurts, and when the pressure has been piled on by them, it has given the parents and coaches great pleasure watching them execute great passages of play that has more than often resulted in scoring a try or two. It still remains an uphill battle trying to get the Thoroughbreds to perform as a team as this is when they play their best rugby. Reluctance to pass the ball sooner has been our down fall. Getting the ball to our fast winger Kyann doesn’t happen enough. I have found by telling the individuals responsible, that they will end up on the wing to experience no ball worked wonders, however, it didn’t take them long to forget that. I would like to thank my Manager and Assistant Coach. Also have to mention the parents for getting the kids to practice and the games, and hope they have enjoyed the season. Simeon Cole - Coach

58 Marist U11 Green The Marist Under 11 Green team started the 2015 season strongly with a sound win over Feilding Sharks. With plenty of open spaces the team ran in several long range tries. Angus Lyver continued his 2014 form scoring several well taken tries. In the next few weeks against strong opposition the team struggled to assert themselves in the forwards at the breakdown and in the tackles. Against these teams, who dominated the competition and filled the top 4 spots on the table, our team battled gallantly, but ultimately the superior break down skills and tackling proved the difference. The Quarter Final playoff game was a mirror of the season. The eighth qualifier – Marist U11 Green verses the top qualifier – COB U11 was a real battle with COB gaining the lead well into the second half. Had Marist Green played consistently, tackled as aggressively and showed the passion in the forward play that they showed in this game they would have beaten the teams ahead of them on the competition table during the round robin. Marist Green lost their games by close margins, usually losing the lead in the second half when the opposition showed real desire to win. It’s a lesson if taken that will stand the players in this team in good stead in the coming years. At times the team played structured and disciplined rugby that blew their more organised opposition off the park. In the forward pack Zayden Gieson, Carlo Finalyson and Xavier Grayson displayed good skill in the tight exchanges regularly, stealing opposition ball and driving hard with the ball in hand. Lachlan Hincks, Ashton Lucas and Oliver Olsen ran strongly with ball in hand when the opportunity arose. Zavier & ignacious Puki-Smith were aggressive in the tackle and carried the ball into contact well displaying grit and determination. Jayden Elers and Wiremu Ruawai played strongly in general play. The backs that played in the forwards should be commended - Rian Lyver, Cade Daziel and Jack Sproull all filled in when required. In the back line there is some real talent. Angus Lyver scored several ‘length of the field’ tries using speed and guile. Hael Pritchard improved rapidly as the season went on running from full-back and scored some memorable tries, most of them from deep in his own half. Jaxon Hannan provided good ball to his wingers when the limited opportunities arose, however, as the season proved these were few and far between. Jack Gordon tackled strongly which proved decisive against some of the stronger opposition who threatened to run over our team. Cade Dalziel and Rian Lyver ran hard and alternated between the forwards and the backs regularly. Taine Guy, Jack Sproull and Toby Molyneux shared half-back duties throughout the season. Riley Eaton-Palmer ran hard on the wing and tackled well. Cairo Hapeta-Te Kura ran hard in her limited appearances. Thank you for your attendance at trainings, the turn outs were always good. The coaches Phil, John, Dan and Roy appreciated the numbers that turned up each week. Thank you for fun season, we wish you all the best with your future season’s here at Marist.

59 Marist U11 White

This year was the first year of full field footy for the U11 White lads and with plenty of numbers at registration day the U11 grade was split into two teams. We had around 17 boys in our squad with a lot of the boys new to rugby so the basics of tackling, running and passing were taught at the few trainings. Having lost a core group of the players to other clubs it was a new look for the 2015 season. The results this year for the Marist U11 White team have been disappointing, with a lot of the scores in excess of 50 points against us. Being on the receiving end of a lot of those scores doesn’t help the boys confidence and it showed late in games when we started slipping off tackles we shouldn’t have and passes weren’t sticking when they were supposed to be. In saying that every game we start well and match most teams physically but as the games wore on we lost our structure and confidence and the results speak for themselves. When you have 6 or 7 boys in their first or second season on the field at one time against some clubs that have been together for a few seasons it is hard on the boys mentally. What we have learned as a group is that at this grade we need full commitment from everyone involved because having 12 and 13 boys at games and even less at trainings won’t cut it at this level. We have some very talented individuals in this club and if put on the right track with the right support around them will definitely go a long way in there rugby careers. The culture amongst the boys is a lot of fun and hopefully in the near future they can stick together and have a successful season next year. Last but not least a quick thank you to all the boys and supporters who turned week in and week out, to our Manager Mark thank you for time and effort this year it has made our job as coaches a hell of a lot easier. 60 Marist U12/13 White

One word that sums up this year’s season is OMINOUS. A fantastic team culture led to a great year. With Glen, Andrew and Kals the 3 wise men at the helm we conquered. With a formidable captain (Kaylis) this team showed great fortitude. A fully fueled juggernaut forward pack not only delivered our classy backs great quality ball but set the platform for future games. Our backs would carve opposition defence lines at will. With current Turbo’s saying ” Our boys would learn alot from this back line” was encouraging. Forwards; with front rowers smashing thru other teams (Trent, Lotu, Issac, Matty, Kees, George and Raymond…the BUS, coupled with depth chargers (Scott, Mal, Takawaenga, Ihaia, Riley, and awesome Ormus) truly showed their value. Backs; that showed stealth & agility beyond their years (Mosese, Hunter, Korey, Keanu and Leo ) would majestically manipulate other teams. Combined with the best finishers in the game (Sonte, Jared, Bobby, Tremaine and Tavita) would execute with great accuracy & confidence our game plans. This team has been fantastic and a privilege to coach. I hope from this year they take away skills that would not only help them with rugby but with life, to be great sons and leaders of the future. Cheers Kalwyn

62 JUNIOR SOCCER

This year we had an amazing season with a lot more children making their representative age groups for Central Football Manawatu. We were also very lucky to provide Beanies drink bottles with the Marist logo on them at a much discounted price to the children. The club is slowly growing in numbers again and the quality of our coaches is improving with the club encouraging and paying for them to do the coaches courses that are put on in our region and taken on the new structure being put in place by New Zealand Football. We had children this year ranging from the ages 31/2-13 and over 20 teams watching them run around in the Marist Uniform was a pleasant sight to see. We also picked up running a second tournament 13th grade last season that went really well and look forward to handing over the 6th grade tournament and picking up the 11th grade tournament next season. We had a great disco for the children at the end of the season. This was a great success which we hope to continue as an annual event. With over 40 kids attending I’m confident it will also grow as an event for all kids to look forward to at the end of every season. We are one of the biggest Junior Football clubs in the Manawatu and could not be a success if it wasn’t for all the volunteers, parents, sponsors and most importantly the children who are at the fields every Saturday to play this wonderful sport. On Behalf of the Club we would like to give a big thanks to all of them. It is with great sadness that we will be losing one of our long time committee members Kieran Hurley he has been a rock as the treasurer of the club and has been integral in helping the club out of the red and back into the black. We will also be losing two more members Shellee Wood and Kazia Jensen as their wonderful kids will be moving on to senior levels. Good luck guys and all the best. During the summer season the junior club is looking into running a Marist tiny tots football skills on a Friday evening for ages walking toddlers to 4 year olds, so keep all eyes out for that in the coming months.
