Damaliscus Pygargus Phillipsi – Blesbok
Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi – Blesbok colour pattern (Fabricius et al. 1989). Hybridisation between these taxa threatens the genetic integrity of both subspecies (Skinner & Chimimba 2005). Assessment Rationale Listed as Least Concern, as Blesbok are abundant on both formally and privately protected land. We estimate a minimum mature population size of 54,426 individuals (using a 70% mature population structure) across 678 protected areas and wildlife ranches (counts between 2010 and 2016). There are at least an estimated 17,235 animals (counts between 2013 and 2016) on formally Emmanuel Do Linh San protected areas across the country, with the largest subpopulation occurring on Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The population has increased significantly Regional Red List status (2016) Least Concern over three generations (1990–2015) in formally protected National Red List status (2004) Least Concern areas across its range and is similarly suspected to have increased on private lands. Population Solver AiS Challenge Final Report April 3, 2002 Team Members: Matt Higgins Josh Neidigh Levi Valdez Executive Summary Populations of different species of animals are very important to many people in the United States. Some species of animals in the US are doing very well, while others are on the verge of extinction or have extremely small and unhealthy populations. Animals like the White Tail Deer and Snow Geese are doing very well, but others like the Californian Condor and Whooping Crane are not doing that great. Game populations are very important to game managers; they try to get all species at a reasonable population that is not too great nor to low. These people try to find different management plans that will work effectively and efficiently, both economically and environmentally. They also need to know what non-native species would harm native ones, and what non-invasive species would be a plus in our society. With some revision and adaptation this program could be of use to Game Managers and Biologists around the world to find good management plans and predict future populations. In the early 1960’s, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and the New Mexico State Game Commission began a program of exotic big game introduction to increase and diversify hunting opportunities. Habitats with low potential for native big game were targeted for exotic introduction. Over a nine-year period beginning in 1969, gemsbok (Oryx gazella) or oryx, a native of Africa, were released into creosote and mesquite brush land areas on the White Sands Missile Range. -

CONSERVATION FORCE A FORCE FOR WILDLIFE CONSERVATION BENEFITS OF REGULATED HUNTING FOR LEOPARD (PANTHERA PARDUS) Legal, regulated tourist hunting of African leopard (Panthera pardus) benefits the species through mitigation of the primary threats: habitat loss and fragmentation; increased human populations leading to higher incidence of human-wildlife conflict; poaching and illegal wildlife trade; and prey base declines.i • Habitat: The threat of habitat loss is mitigated in part by fully-protected national parks, which provide over 400,000 km2 of relatively secure habitat for leopard across the six Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries that rely on regulated hunting to sustain their leopard and leopard prey populations.ii The national parks are > 30,000 km2 larger than in 1982, when the leopard was downlisted to “threatened” under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and leopard are estimated to be present in most of the parks in Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.iii Regulated hunting revenues help cover the costs of policing these parks, which in most cases do not generate sufficient revenue to cover all enforcement expenses.iv • Habitat: The threat of habitat loss is further mitigated by areas dedicated to regulated hunting. In Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, hunting areas include government reserves, communal wildlife management areas, and private ranches. They are substantially larger than the national parks and represent over 700,000 km2.v Leopard are estimated to be present across almost all hunting areas.vi • Habitat: According to the 2016 IUCN Red List assessment of leopard, the species’ total extant range exceeds 8.5 million km2, with between 4.3 million and 6.3 million km2 of range available in Southern and East Africa. -

Combining the Latin words for “large” (mega) and “animals” (fauna) creates the word “megafauna.” Megafauna are the largest animals on Earth – the ones that dominate the landscape during the time in which they live. Dinosaurs were certainly the megafauna of their time. And after the dinosaurs all died off in the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, new megafauna arose. They looked a lot like their modern descendants but were much bigger. Imagine wombats the size of a compact car, birds that stood taller than a human being, or snakes that make modern pythons look puny. Scientists consider animals that weigh more than 44 kilograms as adults to be megafauna. The term applies not only to mammals, but also to birds, reptiles, and amphibians—in short, all vertebrates, or animals with a backbone. By that definition, there are plenty of megafauna walking the Earth and swimming in its oceans today. Gorillas, elephants, and whales are prime examples. KIDS CORNER CHARISMATIC MEGAFAUNA Charismatic Megafauna The word “charismatic” means “charming” or “fascinating.” Conservationists coined the term “charismatic megafauna” during the 1980s to acknowledge that people find large animals very interesting, especially large animals that exhibit endearing or intriguing behaviour. -

California State Standards K-LS1-1 Lesson Plan: Grade Level: Kindergarten Colors & Patterns in Nature Background All animals have specific colors and patterns that help them survive in their environment. Fish use the color of their scales to become invisible to flying predators by reflecting the sun. Walking sticks mimic the twigs of trees to hide. Even predators like the cheetah have special patterns to help them survive. Goal In this lesson students will observe the animals of Safari West and explore how their patterns and colors can provide clues to what type of habitat they live in and how it helps them survive. We will also examine the patterns that predators use to make themselves invisible to their prey. Before Your Visit Activity 1: For a fun class project before visiting Safari West, have students make binoculars. This requires two toilet paper rolls, glue, yarn, and pens/crayons. Explain what binoculars are used for and how they help scientists get a closer look at animals. Note to educators: The binoculars help young students focus on individual animals or specific morphological features (as described in the Background above). Activity 2: You may also want to have students make their own notebooks with four pages of b lank white paper so they can draw the various patterns, stripes or spots they see on some of the animals while on safari. Materials to Ask your students bring the ‘”binoculars” and notebooks they made in Bring the classroom. If they did not make their own notebook, you may want to provide them with pre-made versions. -

INFORMATION BRIEF BIG CATS IN AFRICA AFRICAN LION (PANTHERA LEO) Famously known as the king of the jungle, the African lion is the second largest living species of the big cats, after the tiger. African lions are found mostly in savannah grasslands across many parts of sub-Saharan Africa but the “Babary lion” used to exist in the North of Africa including Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, while the “Cape lion” existed in South Africa. Some lions have however been known to live in forests in Congo, Gabon or Ethiopia. Historically, lions used to live in the Mediterranean and the Middle East as well as in other parts of Asia such as India. While there are still some Asian Lions left in India, the African Lion is probably the largest remaining sub species of Lions in the world. They live in large groups called “prides”, usually made up of up to 15 lions. These prides consist of one or two males, and the rest females. The females are known for hunting for prey ranging from wildebeest, giraffe, impala, zebra, buffalo, rhinos, hippos, among others. The males are unique in appearance with the conspicuous mane around their necks. The mane is used for protection and intimidation during fights. Lions mate all year round, and the female gives birth to three or four cubs at a time, after a gestation period of close to 4 months (110 days). Lions are mainly threatened by hunting and persecution by humans. They are considered a threat to livestock, so ranchers usually shoot them or poison carcasses to keep them away from their livestock. -

The research was supported by NERC through the London NERC DTP. All data analysis data visualisation and modelling was done by Daniella Rabaiotti. Tim Coulson provided training in individual based modelling. Mike Croucher assisted in code optimisation for the individual based model. All chapters of this thesis were written by Daniella Rabaiotti, with guidance and comments from Rosie Woodroffe and Richard Pearson. Data from Laikipia, Kenya, on wild dog survival and movements were collected by Rosie Woodroffe and the Kenya Rangelands Wild Dog and Cheetah Project. Data on wild dog mortality in Savé Valley, Zimbabwe were collected by Rosemary Groom and the Savé Valley team at the African Wildlife Conservation Fund. Data on wild dog mortality in the Okavango, Botswana, were collected by J.W. McNutt and the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust. The long horned or giant buffa1o, Pelorovis antiquus, can be inc1uded in the polymorphous Syncerus caffer stock and could therefore be called Syncerus caffer antiquus. The ecology of Pleistocene and modern Connochaetes, Taurolragus and Syncerus is discussed. A relationship between herbivore body size and c1imate, as Bergmann's Rule predicts, could not be demonstrated.
