Peter Asher Music Producer and Performer
PETER ASHER MUSIC PRODUCER AND PERFORMER 1964, one half of Peter & Gordon, who amassed nine Top 20 records. 1968, head of A&R for the Beatles’ record company, Apple Records, where he found, signed and produced James Taylor. 1971, founded Peter Asher Management, representing James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Randy Newman and more for several decades. As a producer, Mr. Asher has worked with such diverse artists as James Taylor, 10,000 Maniacs, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Ringo Starr, Linda Ronstadt, Hans Zimmer, Ed Sheeran, Miguel and Cher, among many others. He has produced thirteen Grammy Award-winning recordings, and in 1977 and 1989 won the Grammy for "Producer of the Year". Recent projects include the production of “So Familiar” the follow-up album (released October 2015) to the highly successful (and Grammy-winning) “Love Has Come for You” (Steve Martin & Edie Brickell), which has also generated a PBS special and a stage musical, “Bright Star”, of which Peter is the music supervisor. “Bright Star”, directed by Walter Bobbie, opened on Broadway in March of 2016 and the Broadway Cast Album (produced by Peter) was released in May. Peter also directed the highly acclaimed Hans Zimmer live concerts (“Hans Zimmer Revealed”), which took place in London on October 10th and 11th .2014 and toured Europe extensively in the spring of 2016. In the New Year’s Honours list for 2015, Peter Asher was awarded a CBE (“Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The official investiture took place at Buckingham Palace on February the 24th.

Lagu pertama berjudul “Goodbye My Lover” dirilis pada bulan Desember 2005 dalam album pertama mereka Back to Bedlam. Yang kedua adalah “High” yang dirilis pada tahun 2006 dari album Back to Bedlam. Yang ketiga adalah "No Bravery" yang dirilis pada tahun 2007 dari album Back to Bedlam. Lagu ketiga berjudul “So Happy” dari album All the Lost Soul dan lagu terakhir adalah "Tears and Rain" dari album Back to Bedlam. Penelitian yang berkaitan dengan bahasa kiasan ini dalam lirik lagu karya James Blunt bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis bahasa kiasan yang digunakan dalam dan menganalisa makna bahasa kiasan yang terkandung dalam lirik lagu tersebut. Data secara langsung diperoleh dari lima lagu karya James Blunt sebagai sumber data dan dianggap sebagai data primer. Teori utama yang dipergunakan adalah dari buku yang ditulis oleh Knickerbocker dan Reninger (1963) yang berjudul Interpreting Literature. Kemudian teori lainnya diusulkan oleh Leech (1974), Larson (1984), serta Morner dan Rausch (1991). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada tujuh jenis bahasa kiasan yang ditemukan dalam empat lagu yaitu personifikasi, hiperbola, simile, ironi, metonimia, metafora mati dan metafora. Di antara jenis kiasan yang disajikan dalam penelitian ini, hiperbola dan personifikasi yang paling sering muncul dalam empat dari lirik lagu karya James Blunt. 1. Investigating Song-Based Language Teaching and Its Effect on Lexical Learning
INVESTIGATING SONG-BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING AND ITS EFFECT ON LEXICAL LEARNING by FRIEDERIKE ANNA GERDA TEGGE A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 1 i Abstract The present thesis addresses the following question: Can popular songs as they are currently used in second and foreign language classrooms benefit lexical learning? Lexical learning is defined as the acquisition of new vocabulary as well as the consolidation and further elaboration of familiar words and phrases. To answer this research question, three methodologically distinct studies are reported. In the first study an international questionnaire explored teacher cognitions as well as actual teaching practices involving songs. The responses of 568 informants in 41 countries indicate that a majority of respondents believe in the usefulness of songs for language learning and that many respondents utilize songs in class for clearly defined pedagogical purposes, including vocabulary learning. The questionnaire also elicited information from the respondents about the way they incorporate songs in lessons, including details about how often a song is played and what types of form- and meaning-focused activities are used to engage learners with the lyrics of a song. The second study investigated the lexical characteristics of teacher-selected songs and the vocabulary learning opportunities they afford. For this purpose, a corpus of 635 songs used for ESL/EFL purposes, comprising 177,384 tokens, was compiled and analysed. Results indicate that teacher-selected songs are short, repetitive and relatively undemanding as far as lexis is concerned compared to other authentic text genres.

Elina Hytönen-Ng, Terhi Skaniakos & Kwok Ng “I WAS A SOLDIER IN KOSOVO” Discourses of war in James Blunt’s early musical career Wars affect and have been affecting a vast number of people’s lives in the world. One of the recent European conficts was the war in the Serbian province of Koso- vo that started in February 1998 involving high levels of ethnic cleansing against the Kosovar Albanians. After unsuccessful peace talks and Milosevic’s refusal to stop the violence in March 1999 NATO intervened. NATO troops took control of Kosovo after the ceasefre in June 1999. (Arkin 2001; Clark 2002.) Stationed with KFOR NATO forces James Hillier Blount was amongst the frst troops to arrive in Kosovo and was deployed as a commander of a tank crew in the Serbian border region. Having served in the Household Calvary Mounted Regiment in London, and in Queen Elizabeth’s personal guards he resigned in 2002 after six years of service. (Barnes 2006; Hardy 2010: 4, 93; Sisario 2007.) Following this, Blount created a stage name as James Blunt and went on to pursue a music career as a singer-songwriter. With the support of his pop rock band set up, his military experiences were often refected in the music. His mu- sic can be seen as mainstream popular music and falls in-between folk or pop rock. The genre of his music is somewhat contradictory as Blunt’s visual image. His band seems to imply folk rock infuences, and has been described as “highly emotional male singer-songwriter” (Ramaswamy 2008), which is not normal for the genre, but rather common in mainstream popular music.

Before charming the world with insightful, moody ballads like “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover,” he served in the British Army for four years, including several months as a 22-year-old peacekeeper in Kosovo. In 2002, James left the army to face another kind of adversary: the music industry. Armed only with some “dodgy demos” showcasing his formidable songwriting talents and arresting voice, Blunt quickly found management and publishing deals, and soon crossed paths with songwriter/produc - er Linda Perry (Pink, Christina Aguilera), who signed him to her Custard label. With the help of producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elliot Smith, Badly Drawn Boy), Blunt recorded his wildly successful 2005 debut album, Back to Bedlam , and has since toured almost continuously. We caught up with him as he prepared for yet another North American tour. You’ve been touring incessantly since your album came out. Yes, and we’re about to do another two and a half months—it’s our third time in the States this year. I suppose that means I’m having too much fun there! I’ve been on the road for two years now. It’s been kind of a long camping holiday. I’m always in [ a bus, and my bandmates are quite smelly, but I’ve enjoyed it—we have a really good band and crew, so it’s been fun.
