In addition to caring for their young children, she was left the responsibilities of their farm for the duration of the war. Using the correspondence this couple left behind at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, this thesis examines women’s roles on farms in the Prairie Provinces, exploring the ways in which work during the First World War was highlighted as patriotic and temporary. Women used their domestic work – knitting, sending letters and parcels, fundraising, and rationing food – to help support the war effort. Despite the fact that women often helped on farms in times of necessity – i.e. harvesting and threshing – the war brought greater numbers of women to the field. However, this work was constructed as temporary in order to maintain pre-war gender ideals. Men’s roles too were specifically defined as patriotic, particularly their work as soldiers and as farmers. Such patriotic work demonstrated their duty to the Empire and to their families. While perhaps not completely representative of all couples on prairie farms in Canada, Isabelle and Sidney Brook’s rich historical record provides insight into the lives of middle-class English-Canadian farm women as they lived on farms during this turbulent period. Building particularly on the work of historian Sarah Carter, this thesis seeks to add further understanding of prairie farm women during the First World War by closely analyzing the rich archival record of the Brook family. ii Acknowledgments This has been a long, winding road, and would not have been possible save for the many people in my life who supported me along the way. Somehow I’m not the same – have been trying to solve the mystery, or diagnose the case, but am no further ahead than two days ago. Never had any trouble about writing to you before, but now – well I don’t know how to write. Physically and mentally I am not feeling the same.1 Sidney Brook, letter to Isabelle Brook from Sarcee Camp, Calgary August 20, 1916 In May 1916, Sidney Brook signed his Attestation Paper, officially enlisting with the 113th “Lethbridge Highlander” Battalion in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In June, Sidney left his thirty-year-old pregnant wife of nine years to care for their four young boys, the oldest of whom – Gordon – was only eight years old, while he pursued his ‘patriotic duty’ overseas.2 Left alone, Isabelle Brook had to assume his role on their farm in Craigmyle, Alberta, adding Sidney’s responsibilities onto her own domestic duties. She did so gladly, explaining that although she missed him, she was “keeping up pretty well.”3 It is apparent through examining her wartime letters that she enjoyed caring for the farm. While it was not uncommon for women to take over their farms in their husbands’ absences, the First World War presented a unique situation on the prairies in western Canada. More men left for longer periods, leaving an agricultural labour crisis behind. While many men found patriotism through their work as farmers and soldiers, women across the prairies refashioned their work both within the home and on the fields to reflect the patriotic ideals of the time. Extended absences took many men away from their farms, leaving their work to wives who not only had their own work, but also that of their husbands. Many people in western Canada praised women’s work as patriotic, some even claiming that it was this work that gave women the vote across the prairies in 1916.4 Meanwhile, farmers competed with soldiers for recognition as the most vital part of the war effort, particularly when they faced conscription in 1917. This thesis focuses particularly on the life of one family, the Brooks, who farmed near and lived in the town of Craigmyle, Alberta in the early twentieth century.5 For the duration of the war, Isabelle and Sidney exchanged

He worked as research assistant to Eugene Forsey, and as a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina and the University of Alberta, prior to accepting a permanent position in the history department at Memorial University, Newfoundland. His research related primarily to prairie agricultural labour. He is author of numerous articles relating to labour issues, migrant workers on the prairies, and prairie history. Abstract The Great War was a formative event for men who came of age between 1914 and 1918. They believed the experience forged them into a distinct generation. This collective identification more than shaped a sense of self; it influenced understanding of the conflict’s meaning. Canadian historians, however, have overlooked the war’s generational impact, partly because they reject notions of a disillusioned Lost Generation. Unlike European or American youths, it is argued that Canadian veterans did not suffer postwar disillusionment. Rather, they embraced the war alongside a renewed Canadian nationalism.

Cherwinski THE TORONTO Daily Star reporter sent down to the city's Union Station in the wee hours of a mid-August day in 1908 witnessed what he considered an awesome sight: "Hundreds of telescope valises with coats strapped to them are stumbling blocks to traffic in the... station. Thousands of small parcels and lunches are falling from the hands of heavily laden excursionists, or are left behind to be remembered later with regrets."1 His sketch described a scene repeated annually over four decades in a number of railway stations, large and small, in a number of cities and towns across the eastern half of Canada. The event involved the largest mass movement of men organized to meet a specific peacetime need. The crusade for this civilian army was to protect the nation's most valuable commodity from the vagaries of prairie weather. Each August the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (and other companies in later years) organized low-cost harvest excursions to transport to the west able-bodied men, preferably farmers, from the Maritimes and central Canada to help farm­ ers to harvest their crops before winter permanently gripped the region. It was a crusade because the Wheat Economy was critical to the nation's development. To sustain it Canadians everywhere had been bombarded for years with propaganda about the fantastic opportunities available in the west for people with money or ambition or both. Land was cheap or free for the asking, jobs were plentiful, and wages were high. Granted, there were dangers, largely created by writers of cheap romantic publications, but this only enhanced the sense of adventure.1 These publicity agents created a myth or mystique about the west which was only partly true even in good times and a total fabrication in bad.

When injustice and inequality take place in our society, we should all remember the highly virtuous and most respectfully loved Nellie McClung. Nellie McClung was recognized for her fight to bring in laws that supported women. This Albertan leader was a true heroine for all women and supported them through times they wanted to also share their opinion on specific matters to the public. This was possible with the help of her inimitable group “The Famous Five”, a group which consisted of 5 women who stepped into the world to improve the future of all women, Nellie McClung was born on October 20, 1873 in Chatsworth, Ontario to John Mooney and Letitia McCurdy. She earned her teaching certificate at age 16 even though she started attending school at age 10. This shows not only how clever she was, but that at an early age she was determined to share her knowledge with others. She later joined the Women's Christian Temperance Union where her mother-in-law was the president. Her participation in this group foreshadowed her later involvement with the Famous Five. By 1908, Nellie Published her first book called “Sowing Seeds in Danny”. It turned out to be the best-seller and was honored and talked about in many shows and magazines.

    Think Twice Anika Islam Grade Seven, Fairview School Word Count- 1194 Every four years, women in Canada go to the poll stations to vote for their next prime minister, often without thinking twice about who they owe that thanks to for winning them that right. The harsh truth is, back over a century ago, not a single women could vote in any type of election- not federal, provincial, or even municipal; in fact, a woman was not even defined as a ‘person’. That right had to be fought for, and, without women like Nellie McClung, women today would not be able to do what many do without thinking, such as voting. On October 20th, 1873, Nellie Letitia McClung, born as Helen Letitia Mooney, came into the world. McClung did not start school until age 10; however, being extremely gifted, she received a teaching degree at only age 16. During those early years, the suffragette inside her started to grow. Even as a youngster, McClung broke boundaries, often going outside for recess to play football, a sport not meant for girls back then, and then fighting with parents who disapproved of her actions. Ultimately, McClung won the argument with her good sense and valid arguments; little did people know that this was only the beginning for Nellie McClung. McClung was a teacher until she married her husband Robert Wesley McClung in 1896. Her husband became a pharmacist in Manitou, Manitoba, while she became a part of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, a group devoted to fighting for the prohibition of alcohol.

The passage of this Act granted most Manitoba women the right to vote and to run for public office. Manitoba was the first province in Canada to win the right to vote for women. Nellie McClung was one of the Manitoba women involved in campaigning for the women’s right to vote in 1916. She was also one of Canada’s Famous Five who initiated and won the Persons Case, to have women become recognized as persons under Canadian law in 1929.     CHAPTER ONE THE MAKING OF A PAPER SLEUTH uch of my life has been driven by a fascination with Glengarry County and its history.That fascination extends Mback to the 1930s and 1940s, when my father, a Presbyterian preacher, made the pilgrimage back to his roots in Glengarry every summer. Starting in my teens, I took notes from the reminiscences of my grandmother, who died in 1942. Over time, this interest evolved into a unique career in historical research, which continues to this day. At 16 I left home, lied about my age and tried to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. My father must have intervened, as the Air Force sent me back to school. I did succeed in volunteering for the infantry, but my army career was equally undistinguished. I didn’t get overseas, and the pinnacle of my military career must have occurred sometime before I got myself busted from sergeant back to private. Having signed up in the hope of fighting the Japanese in 1945, the only action I saw was chasing Japanese fire balloons in a jeep with a Bren gun during weapons training in the mountains of British Columbia. When the war ended, I asked for a discharge and went back to school. I signed up for some college courses in English and account- ing.After a year’s study,I had a passing grade in English and a failure in accounting. I left school for a job in Montreal as office gopher with a Dutch export firm.When I discovered that the manager was shafting the owners, I led an office revolt by the three employees, and the offending manager fired me forthwith.
