Five StarsBy jimgreat book a must for milwaukee baseball fans This book rekindles memories of Milwaukeersquo;s County Stadium through detailed summaries of 72 games played there, and insightful feature essays about the history of the ballpark. The process to select games was agonizing, yet deliberate. The book could have easily been filled with memorable games by just Hank Aaron or Warren Spahn.About half of the games are dedicated to the Braves; the other half to the Brewers. Some of the summaries chronicle games that were memorable and historic when they occurred, such as Jim Wilson tossing the first no-hitter in County Stadium in 1954, the 1955 All-Star Game, the World Series contests of 1957, 1958, and 1982, and Robin Yount collecting his 3,000th hit in 1992. Other summaries recall great performances long forgotten, such as Bob Buhlrsquo;s 14-inning complete-game victory in 1953 and the Brewersrsquo; two grand slams in one inning in an 18-1 rout of the Boston Red Sox in 1980. The games highlight the accomplishments and heroics of not just readily recognizable stars, like Aaron, Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Cecil Cooper, Paul Molitor, and Yount, but also revive memories of players like Gene Conley, Del Crandall, and Wade Blasingame of the Braves and Bob Coluccio, Dale Sveum, and Steve Woodard of the Brewers. Also included are great performances by the Bravesrsquo; and Brewersrsquo; opponents, like Willie Maysrsquo; four homers in 1961 and Nolan Ryanrsquo;s 300th victory in 1990. Twelve feature essays round out the volume and provide context for the stadiumrsquo;s history. Topics include the stadiumrsquo;s construction, the Bravesrsquo; move to and departure from Milwaukee, the Chicago White Soxrsquo; home games at County Stadium, the Seattle Pilotsrsquo; relocation to Milwaukee, and the stadiumrsquo;s demolition. Members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) researched and wrote all of the essays in this volume. These uncompensated volunteers are united by their shared interest in baseball history and resolute commitment to preserving its history. Without their unwavering dedication this volume would not have been possible. With contributions by Alan Cohen, Bill Nowlin, Bob Buege, Brian P. Wood, Chip Greene, Dan Fields, Dennis D. • A's News Clips, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 Coco Crisp Decides On
A’s News Clips, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 Coco Crisp decides on next team, but won't say Susan Slusser, Chronicle Staff Writer Departures are the norm for the A's this winter, with pitchers Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Craig Breslow all traded and free-agent outfielders Josh Willingham and David DeJesus officially leaving. One of the A's free-agent outfielders, however, remains on the team's radar. Oakland wants to bring back Coco Crisp, according to A's sources. With so many young pitchers on the staff, Crisp's defensive ability is especially valuable. Crisp's agent, Steve Comte, confirmed that he has continued to talk to the A's, and he said Monday that Crisp has decided where he will play this season. "Covelli has made up his mind," said Comte, using Crisp's given name. "Basically, we just have to let that team know." The Cubs and Dodgers are other teams recently linked to the Crisp. The Orioles also are interested, according to cbssports.com. Comte estimated that he has spoken to 13-14 teams about Crisp this winter. Crisp has said that he wants to play for a contender, and though the A's are clearly in rebuilding mode, Comte said, "They're intriguing. It will be interesting how it plays out. They've moved a tremendous amount of personnel, but there is a plan there." The A's have spoken to many free-agent outfielders, including onetime Oakland prospect Ryan Ludwick, according to a major-league source. Other possibilities include ex-Giant Cody Ross and Conor Jackson, whom the A's traded to Boston in late August.

  • July 2, 2013 Tribune Cubs Near Deal with Dodgers to Unload Marmol
July 2, 2013 Tribune Cubs near deal with Dodgers to unload Marmol Trade would provide a little salary relief By Paul Sullivan OAKLAND — When Carlos Marmol was asked to waive a no-trade clause to go to the Angels last November, his original response was "no thanks." Marmol eventually relented, but the Cubs pulled out on the deal at the last minute and let Marmol return as the team's closer. That didn't work so well. Eight months later, the Cubs appear to be ready to send Marmol to Los Angeles once again, but this time to the Dodgers. Cubs President Theo Epstein was unavailable for comment on an ESPN report the two sides were close to a deal. A source said the deal is likely to happen, providing the Cubs with minimal salary relief from the remaining $4.9 million on Marmol's $20 million deal. Thus will end a chapter of Cubs history that began with much promise but imploded like a ninth-inning walk, wild pitch, hit batter and walk-off hit. Marmol, who was designated for assignment last Tuesday, would give the Dodgers some late-inning options. He wouldn't replace 25-year-old closer Kenley Jansen, but he would provide the Dodgers with a veteran arm for a setup role. Jansen took over after Brandon League lost closer job on June 10 with his fourth blown save. Jansen has seven saves and a 2.41 ERA in 41 games. The Cubs' priority is to not have to pay the rest of Marmol's salary.
