One of the Summer Traditions of Shinshiro-City, this festival, held annually on the night of August 13th, has as stage the area around Sakurabuchi, on the Toyokawa River bed, and the gorgeous mountains that form the backdrop make the explosions echo in peculiar and entertaining ways

followed by dance, bonfire - and the Hiondory Torch Festival/fire dance started as a way to remember the souls that passed away during the the battle of Nagashino and the Warring States era, and is held dramatically at the war ruin Shingen Zuka. Local people perform with massive torches (2-3m long, 80cm in diameter). An event with Bon-Odori dances, performances of Japanese Taiko drums, and both tezutsu and regular fireworks. This year it’s on Friday 1 November, so for eight weeks the children of Newcastle will be fascinated by another magical display. Last year it was “The Snow- man” and the year before it was the animals from the books of Beatrix Potter. The complex and detailed creative process takes up to 3,500 hours and involves elaborate storyboards designed in collaboration with German company One World Studio, which specialises in creating displays all around the world. Newcastle’s Christmas lights will be switched on by local pop star and Brit award winner Sam Fender on 7 November.
