Sadri ©2009 Chadia Louai ii ABSTRACT The Clash of Civilization thesis by Samuel Huntington and the claims of other scholars such as Bernard Lewis reinforced the impression in the West that the Arab world is a homogeneous and rigid entity ready to clash with other civilizations. In fact, some in the West argue that world civilizations have religious characteristics, for that reason the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will be primarily cultural and religious. However, other scholars argue that there is no single Islamic culture but rather multiple types of political Islam and different perception of it. -

Spring 2006 Industry Study Final Report News Media Industry The Industrial College of the Armed Forces National Defense University Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. 20319-5062 i NEWS MEDIA 2006 ABSTRACT: The American news media industry is characterized by two competing dynamics – traditional journalistic values and market demands for profit. Most within the industry consider themselves to be journalists first. In that capacity, they fulfill two key roles: providing information that helps the public act as informed citizens, and serving as a watchdog that provides an important check on the power of the American government. At the same time, the news media is an extremely costly, market-driven, and profit-oriented industry. These sometimes conflicting interests compel the industry to weigh the public interest against what will sell. Moreover, several fast-paced trends have emerged within the industry in recent years, driven largely by changes in technology, demographics, and industry economics. They include: consolidation of news organizations, government deregulation, the emergence of new types of media, blurring of the distinction between news and entertainment, decline in international coverage, declining circulation and viewership for some of the oldest media institutions, and increased skepticism of the credibility of “mainstream media.” Looking ahead, technology will enable consumers to tailor their news and access it at their convenience – perhaps at the cost of reading the dull but important stories that make an informed citizenry. Changes in viewer preferences – combined with financial pressures and fast paced technological changes– are forcing the mainstream media to re-look their long-held business strategies. These changes will continue to impact the media’s approach to the news and the profitability of the news industry. -

RLST 124I: Varieties of Ancient Judaism Spring 2009 Handout #7 (May 12, 2009) “Persian Jews” Sassanid Empire: Persian ruling dynasty established in 226 CE, which instituted rigid class hierarchies, autocratic military rule, and Zoroastrianism as the “official” Persian religion; in constant military conflict with the Roman Empire, until collapsing under the spread of Islam in the 650s dualism: a theological orientation that posits a struggle between good and evil that is conducted at the individual, communal, and cosmic levels; dualistic religions usually assume the eventual triumph of “good” over “evil,” but assign different levels of potency and authority to the powers of evil Zoroastrianism/Magianism/Mazdeanism: a dualistic ethical monotheism of the Near East, in which believers worship a single god of wisdom and truth (Ahura Mazda) and work to resist the forces of evil (in extreme formulations, posited as almost a second god); Mazda is not worshipped with sacrifices, but in fire temples managed by special priests (magi); the religion is named for Zarathustra (or Zoroaster), the prophet (of the 64th? 18th? 10th? 6th? cen. In doing so, it finds an alignment of interests between Baghdad, Ankara, and Washington, D.C., in a strong and stable Iraq fueled by increased hydrocarbon production. Where possible, the United States should therefore encourage The Coming Turkish- Turkish and Iraqi cooperation and economic integration as a key part of its post-2011 strategy for Iraq and the region. This analysis is based on the author’s experiences in Iraq and Iranian Competition reviews of Turkish and Iranian press and foreign policy writing. Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication 10 (2017) 255–271 MEJCC brill.com/mjcc Mythical State The Aesthetics and Counter-Aesthetics of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria Nathaniel Greenberg George Mason University, va, usa [email protected] Abstract In the summer of 2014, on the heels of the declaration of a ‘caliphate’ by the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (isis), a wave of satirical production depicting the group flooded the Arab media landscape. Seemingly spontaneous in some instances and tightly measured in others, the Arab comedy offensive paralleled strategic efforts by the United States and its allies to ‘take back the Internet’ from isis propagandists. In this essay, I examine the role of aesthetics, broadly, and satire in particular, in the creation and execution of ‘counter-narratives’ in the war against isis. Drawing on the pioneering theories of Fred Forest and others, I argue that in the age of digital reproduction, truth-based messaging campaigns underestimate the power of myth in swaying hearts and minds. As a modus of expression conceived as an act of fabrication, satire is poised to counter myth with myth. But artists must balance a very fine line. Introduction Overview of the educational system In Algeria, education is compulsory from the age of six. Education is one of the main priorities of the Algerian government. The Algerian educational system is divided into several levels: preparatory, basic (primary and secondary), secondary, vocational and higher education. Access to higher education is subject to obtaining an A level equivalent or an equivalent foreign qualification. In 1962, Algeria had only three higher education establishments (Algiers, Oran and Constantine) with fewer than 2,000 students, of which only 1% were women, and a total of 250 teaching staff. It was only after independence (1963) that the Algerian government began to rebuild its country and its educational system. After the creation of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the 1970's, universities gradually came into being. The university network represented 107 universities in 2015 and more than 1,500,000 students, 60% of whom were women, for a total of 54,000 teaching staff. Algerian universities are public institutions and scientific, cultural and professional bodies, endowed with corporate status and financial autonomy. They are composed of governing bodies (board of directors, scientific council), a dean, faculties, institutes and annexes; common administrative and technical departments. The Algerian educational system in terms of structure was influenced by the Napoleonic system for historical reasons, which go back to the French colonisation. -
