A SPECIFICALLY THEATRICAL KIND OF HORROR: THE WOMAN IN BLACK ABSTRACT The article focuses on Stephen Mallatratt’s play The Woman in Black (1987) and con- fronts it with the homonymous novel by Susan Hill (1983), that is its source. The goal of the article is to emphasize the originality of the play in comparison with the literary work, and to demonstrate how it employs specifically theatrical devices to achieve its horror effects. In particular, the article underlines the continuity between theatrical performance and rite, that opens the stage door to the irruption of the supernatural. KEY WORDS: stage

Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer, travels to a remote village to put the affairs of a recently deceased client, Alice Drablow in order. As he works alone in her isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover disturbing secrets - and his unease grows when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed in black. The locals are strangely unwilling to talk about the unsettling occurrence, and Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent... The Woman in Black is one of those rare instances of watched film before reading book. It doesn’t happen often. And I feel confident in saying that in this case it had no affect on my experience. Admittedly, it has been several years since I have watched the film, but still I think that my previous statement would hold true regardless of time passed.

The British coastline, similarly, has served as both a secure defence and a space of freedom and abandonment. However, since the decline of both the empire and the maritime industries, these certainties have eroded, along with the physical coastline itself.

In other words, a ghost story written by Jane Austen?Alas, we cannot give you Austen, but Susan Hills remarkable Woman in Black comes as close as our era can provide. Set on the obligatory English moor, on an isolated causeway, the story has as its hero Arthur Kipps, an up-and-coming young solicitor who has come north from London to attend the funeral and settle the affairs of Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. The routine formalities he anticipates give way to a tumble of events and secrets more sinister and terrifying than any nightmare: the rocking chair in the deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a childs scream in the fog, and most dreadfully -- and for Kipps most tragically -- the Woman in Black.

Keckwick arrives in a pony and trap to take Kipps to Eel Marsh House. We see the magnificent landscape and wildlife as the cross the causeway. Eel Marsh House and it’s surroundings are described. Kipps sees the woman in black again. Seriously shaken, Kipps returns to the house. Kipps decides to set off on foot back to Crythin Gifford intending to intercept Keckwick. Susan Hill uses the weather to bring out the beauty of Kipp’s surroundings on the journey to Eel Marsh House. In order to get highest marks in an exam you will need to comment on the details of the setting and the effect it has on Kipp’s mind. ‘sky, sky and only a strip of land. I saw this part of the world as those great landscape painters had seen Holland, or the country around Norwich.’ ‘today there were no clouds at all’ ‘today all was bright and clear’ ‘there was thin sun overall’ ‘the sky having lost the bright blue of morning, to become almost silver’ ‘I would of travelled a thousand miles to see it’ Why and how is sound used in this Chapter? - Examples of Sound In The Chapter: Keckwick clucked at the pony The marshes lay silent The trotting of the pony’s hooves The rumble of wheels Harsh weird cries from birds Rough scraping of the cart Faint keening of the wind ‘rawk rawk’ of a hidden bird. Sound builds up a sense of atmosphere and creates fear and foreboding. Arthur begins to explore the grounds of Eel Marsh House and begins to stumble upon some ‘fragmentary ruins’ he wonders if these were the ruins Mr Jerome was talking about in the previous chapter.

A perfect example of horror and gothic writing, readers are transported to the eerie setting of Eel Marsh House in the small market town of Crythin Gifford in the north of England. The story is told through the first person narration of Arthur Kipps, who begins the novel too distressed to share a ghost story with his family, and then recounts how as a young solicitor he was sent to oversee the funeral of a Mrs Alice Drablow, a client of his law firm.

Is it really a ghost story? One thing I love is when an author writes multiple series but they all take place in the same universe. I should warn you that whilst James' spectres have some sense of fair-play, where innocence and good intentions count for something, Hill's blind malevolent forces manifestly don't. Reuse this content. Read more. This is a collection of five novels novellas? I know The Woman in Black is purported to be the best, and the 'classic' ghost story, but the lack of ghost story logic for the choosing of the victims just didn't feel right for me. This one is told in two different points of view and there was no helpful clue when you went from one character's 'voice' to the next so I got really confused. The story was unique and creepy, the characters were interesting to read about and I like the use of the creepy painting and the overwhelming power it had over whoever owned the painting or viewed the painting, the more the owner of painting looked at it the more they felt compelled to continue looking as it, as if in some way it was trying to steal your soul in a way.

Sample essays Question 1 How does Susan Hill present the theme of the super- natural in The Woman in Black? Grade-A* answer Susan Hill weaves an awareness of the supernatural throughout the story through the plot, the structure, the use of language and imagery. The Woman in Black is a ghost story and therefore the idea of the supernatural is intrinsic to the whole work.1 The whole 1 Clear beginning, which addresses point of a ghost story is to frighten, thrill and entertain. Before the task immediately. reader starts the story, he or she has to put aside any disbelief he or she may have in the supernatural in order to enjoy the experience.2 2 Understands the conventions. The classic ghost story has many elements, the main one being the ghost itself, in this case, the woman in black. A ghost is the spirit of a dead person who comes back to earth in order to settle old scores and complete any unfinished business.3 The woman in black is the spirit of Jennet Humfrye whose child was twice cruelly taken from 3 Defines terms. her. For this, she (unreasonably) blames her sister Alice Drablow and has returned to earth to haunt her and exact revenge on all who are involved in her affairs. The word ‘supernatural’ means beyond what is natural, and in the novel supernatural events are seen as products of evil.3 Arthur Kipps is haunted mercilessly by the woman in black until he is filled with terror and loses all that is dear to him.
