IAI Nesher From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Argentine Air Force Dagger, Jujuy Airport, 1981 Role: Multi-role fighter aircraft Manufacturer: IAI First flight: 1972 Introduced: 1971 Retired: 1977 (Israel) Status : Active service Primary users Israeli Air Force Argentine Air Force Number built: 61 (51+10) Developed from: Dassault Mirage 5 The Israel Aircraft Industries Nesher (Hebrew: ()*, "Eagle") is the Israeli name of the Dassault Mirage 5 multi-role fighter aircraft. Most were later sold to the Argentine Air Force as Daggers, and later upgraded as Fingers. Design and development Dassault Aviation had developed the Mirage 5 at the request of the Israelis, who were the main foreign customers of the Mirage III. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) wanted the next version to have less all-weather capability in exchange for improved ordnance carrying capacity and range as the weather in the Middle East is mostly clear. The French government arms embargo on Israel (on the eve of the Six Day War and afterwards) prevented the first 30 Mirage 5 aircraft (which were already paid for by Israel) plus optional 20 from being delivered and cut off support for the existing Mirage IIICJ fleet. Officially, Israel built the aircraft after obtaining complete blueprints. However, some sources claim Israel received 50 Mirage 5s in crates from French Air Force (AdA), while the AdA took over the 50 aircraft originally intended for Israel.[1][2] The Nesher was identical to the Mirage 5, except for the use of some Israeli avionics, a Martin-Baker zero-zero ejector seat, and provisions for a wider range of AAMs (Air-to-Air Missiles), including the Israeli Shafrir heat-seeking missile.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Portsmouth University Research Portal (Pure) Steven Paget Published in War in History, 24:2, 2017, pp.217-235. This is the post-print version and must not be copied or cited without permission. Under Fire: The Falklands War and the Revival of Naval Gunfire Support I have always placed a high priority on exercising NGS. All my ships have had the capacity & I made sure we knew how to use it. NGS became a lower priority for the Naval Staff & new construction planned had no gun. Op [Operation] Corporate changed all that thinking. Captain Michael Barrow1 The reputation of naval gunfire support (NGS) has waxed and waned since the initial development of the capability. At times, NGS has been considered to have been of supreme importance. At others, it has been viewed as worthless. By the end of the 1970s, there was burgeoning opinion in some circles that NGS had become obsolete. Operation Corporate – the Falklands War – demonstrated that reports of the demise of NGS had been greatly exaggerated. NGS played a prominent role during Operation Corporate, but it was just one of a multitude of capabilities. As John Ballard put it: ‘The British...integrated nearly every tool in the kit bag to mount their operation rapidly and win at the knife’s edge of culmination.’2 There can be no doubt that the destructive mix of capabilities utilised by British forces was crucial to the success of Operation Corporate. However, due to the inevitable limits of operating so far from home, NGS was often required to redress deficiencies in other fire support capabilities.

  • Hms Plymouth, Falklands Veteran
I am very pleased that it has proved possible to save HMS PLYMOUTH from sinking as a missile target or the scrap heap. This - fine ship has been in commission for some twenty-seven years, which has seen her at work, and play, in every corner of the globe. I had the very good fortune to be in command of HMS Plymouth throughout the Falklands operation, where she was in the thick of the action from South Georgia right through the entire operation; and • :therefore my ships company and I have a particular soft spot for our , old ship, which I do hope we may be able to share with you through this enterprise by the Warship Preservation Trust. A brief history HMS PLYMOUTH was the last of the Type 12 anti-submarine frigates of the `Rothesay' class in service. They were named after coastal resorts. Laid down on 1 July 1958, HMS PLYMOUTH was launched on 20 July 1959 by the Right Honourable Nancy, Viscountess Astor, CH, and completed on 16 June 1961 right here in Plymouth. Designed with two boilers to provide steam propulsion to two s hafts, she had a top speed of around 28 knots. When built, HMS PLYMOUTH was armed with twin 4.5 inch guns mouted in a single turret, 40mm guns aft and two triple-barrelled anti-submarine mortars. Within a year of her commissioning PLYMOUTH was the leader of the Fourth Frigate Squadron in the Far East, taking part in many major multi-national exercises as part of SEATO. She then returned to the UK for a refit and to become leader of the newly-formed 22nd Escort Squadron.

  • Hercules Bombardero Conflicto De Malvinas
