Obituary for Harriet Fuller February 4, 1922 - July 7, 2015 Shrewsbury, | Age 93

“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned toward the sky, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” (Leonardo da Vinci). Harriet Fuller, a licensed pilot who has flown around the world reached the sky she longed to return to and is now in heaven. On Tuesday, July 7, 2015 Harriet’s soul took flight as she died unexpectedly at home at the young age of 93. Harriet rejoices because she is with the man she loved for over 63 years, Howard J. Fuller who took flight and left this earth on January 10, 2004. Though her death saddens her family they celebrate the long and good life she lived.

Harriet J. Ricker was born February 4, 1922 in Shrewsbury a daughter of the late Dean and Jean (Harvey) Ricker. Harriet graduated from the former Maj. Howard W. Beal High School. Through an introduction by her brother, Fred, Harriet met Howard Fuller, a radio engineer in Worcester. She married him on September 26, 1940 and they raised their family in Shrewsbury.

She worked as a clerk at the Shrewsbury Public Library and later as a secretary for Howard’s business, Airway Communications.

A woman before her era Harriet was a licensed pilot and was a member of the Women’s Pilots Association and the 99’s where she served as director and chairman of its board of trustees. She served as director of the Amelia Earhart International Peace Forest and Museum in Topeka, Kansas. She flew throughout the world but was also known to take one of her grandkids on a plane to get an ice cream. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury and once played in its hand bell choir. In earlier years she was a Girl Scout leader.

In heaven Harriet has joined her husband, Howard; their daughter, Gail Andrews; her siblings, Fred, Donald and Howard Ricker, Mary Perry, Margaret Emery and Ann Wurster.

On earth she leaves her children, Donna J. DiPilato and her husband, Vincent of Boylston and Howard J. Fuller Jr. of Greenville, New Hampshire; her grandchildren who knew her always as ‘Greenie’, Lisa DiPilato and her husband, Christopher Nicholas, Vincent DiPilato and his wife, Kerry all of Shrewsbury, Keith Andrews and Sara Goessl and her husband, Christopher all of Beavercreek, Ohio; her great-grandchildren, Steffani, Kyle, Courtnie, Thomas, James, Brady and Logan DiPilato, Andrew, Michael and Michelle Goessl; her great grand-paws, Rowdy Roo and Mayhem Faith; many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Harriet’s life by gathering for a calling hour in Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center, on Saturday, July 11th from 9:00 – 10:45 am and then walking in procession to The First Congregational Church, 19 Church Road where her Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Lynne Dolan will officiate. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Memorials in Harriet’s name to First Congregational Church, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or Worcester County Food Bank, 474 Boston Tpke, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. 2015 AWARD OF MERIT Fly Now Award Time Again to Honor Our Finest! ENE member Billie Downing announces that she and John have been together for 1 year! Submitted by Leigh Meunier, ENE I traveled to my hometown of Somers Point, New Jersey in June to visit family and received some sad news. My seventh grade shop teacher, Barbara Harris Para, died last week in a plane crash. When I had her as a teacher, I was completely unaware of the fact that she was, not only a pilot, but an active member of the aviation community, especially women’s aviation. I should have known something, though, because, for one of our mechanical drawing projects, she had us create our own airport diagrams.

I also had absolutely no idea that she once served as governor for the NY/NJ 99s Section. I am very saddened by the fact that I never got a chance to reach out to her as an adult and 99s member. I did connect with the Garden State Chapter to be kept in the loop and see if there’s anything I can do.

Recently I was delighted be invited to join ENE member Jann Clark and her husband Warren and instructor Steve Gelinas for a flight from Sanford Seacoast Reg. Airport to tour the Hudson River Corridor and experience Manhattan from 2000 ft. The flight took place in Southern Maine Aviation’s C182 N7131S, which made the typical 6-hour drive to NYC into an hour and a half excursion. The flight down featured Steve as PIC and Jann as co-pilot. Warren was busy as photographer and me as spotter. Once we were flying along the Corridor, we were all very busy looking out for traffic with sight-seeing helicopters whizzing by below us and 747 ascending above us. The radios were constantly buzzing with ATC. The view of the big city below was incredible with Central Park, West End, Mid-town, West End and an awesome view the new World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty. We came down to 500 ft along the beaches of Long Island, staying on that track until reaching East Hampton Executive Airport, where we touched down for some lunch in the town of East Hampton. Warren took the yoke in the left seat with Steve as co-pilot on the way home. Jann and I took the back seats as spotters. I’m very grateful to Jann and Warren for al- lowing me to join them to experience an item on all our “bucket lists.” Submitted by Lori Plourd Photos by Lori Plourd by JUNE 22-25, 2015 Candie Oldham Air Race #9

From left to right: Sue Westervelt (my copilot, North Jersey); me, Juliet Lindrooth. (Eastern PA), Mary Wunder (Eastern PA and 7th place winners); and Alicia Sikes (Eastern PA) and Carol Bailey (Washington DC chapter).

It was a tough race with many difficult weather decisions. There were thunderstorms to deal with and avoid, IFR conditions to evade, low ceilings and some low visibility enroute. Racers must maintain VFR at all times.

Sue and I were thrilled to place 9th out of 50 teams, especially after having to deviate on one leg due to thunderstorms.

We did our handicap flight out of Meriden-Markham Airport. Mary Wunder flew up from PA to do it with me. Constance Castillo, airport manager, was great - she loaned us her car to go for breakfast. Sue flew up in her Mooney too.
