...a French island in the middle of the Caribbean

Discovery of Martinique Martinique owes its name to Christopher Columbus, the first European man to discover it in June 1502. It was originally called Madinina, "the island of flowers", by its inhabitants, the Kalinas. On 15th of September 1635, the French Compagnie des Indes d'Amérique (West Indies Company) took possession of the island in the name of King Louis XIII of France. Martinique then became French. The primary objective of France was to cultivate sugar cane for consumers in mainland France at a lower cost. At that time, sugar was a luxury food, and was traditionally bought from Muslim countries at very high prices. This began the island’s development, which led to the arrival of slaves in the sugar cane plantations and gave rise to its famous by-product— rum.

Location of Martinique At the heart of the French West Indies, the island of Martinique lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, between Dominica to the north and Saint Lucia to the south, approximately 450 km north-east of the coast of Venezuela and 700 km south-east of the Dominican Republic. Just 70 km in length and 30 km wide and surrounded by coconut trees and a turquoise sea, the island has many surprises in store for you. Whether you enjoy relaxing, trying out challenging hikes or water activities such as kitesurfing or diving, or are simply passionate about flora and fauna, you will love Martinique which has an annual average temperature of 26°C.

In Martinique, you will find the same services as in mainland France: banks, postal services, telecommunications, car rental, medical practices, local shops, major food retailers, restaurants, etc. The local currency is the euro and the official language is French.

Here are a few valuable tips for a successful stay!

Visa: The same rule applies as for mainland France. Shorts stays (less than 90 days): Martinique is an island in the French Antilles, both a region and an overseas department of France, so no special visa is required for stays lasting less than 90 days. Long stays (over three months): Only nationals from the following countries are exempt from the entry and long-stay visa: Member States of the European Union and European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, Monaco and Andorra. Others must apply for a student visa.

Adapting to Martinique time: The sun rises at 5 a.m. and sets at around 6 p.m. It is therefore best to adapt your rhythm to that by going to bed early and getting up at dawn. This will allow you to get the most out of your stay.

Weather: Martinique has a tropical maritime climate, which means a lot of sun and consistently high temperatures. There are two seasons: the dry season (from December to May) and the wet season (from June to November). However, the average temperature is 26° C on the island throughout the year. It is important to protect yourself from the sun all year round to avoid heatstroke: sun screen and hats are a must.

Price of meals: The average price of a local dish varies between €10 (for meat) and €14 (for fish or seafood), between €12 and €14 for a European dish. There are a number of fast-food outlets and sandwich bars on the island, where you can purchase a meal averaging between €6 and €10.

Cost of living: A liter of soda costs €3 at the supermarket and €5 in the street. The price of a coffee in a bar varies between €2.50 and €3. For phones, prepaid cards cost €10 for 30 minutes of communication on the island. A taxi will cost about 35€ from the airport to Fort-de-France (+/- 12km). Renting a car cost (according to the season) between 30 and 50€/ day.

Useful information (continued)

Medical and health services: There is no vaccination requirement for travelling to Martinique or the neighboring islands. However, due to the conditions and duration of your stay, we recommend having the following up- to-date vaccinations: - Diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccine - Hepatitis A (for an extended or adventurous stay, or if you are staying in an isolated area) - Typhoid fever (if staying for over a month) - Hepatitis B NB: Remember to take the necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. In an emergency: Centre Hospitalier Universitaire – 97261 Fort-de-France- +596 596 55 20 00 Emergency phone number : 112

Electricity: The current is 220 Volts. Depending on which country you come from, you may need to bring an adaptor and converter. Water: Drinkable

Insurance: Valid insurance is required for non-EU nationals. For the French & Kitesurfing and French & Diving programs, special insurance must be purchased.

Safety: Fort-de-France is a town that gets busy very early; it is common to see a lot of people in the streets starting at 6 a.m. However, this bustle ceases at 6 p.m. and the town empties. Consequently, if you have to go into Fort-de-France in the evening, we recommend you are accompanied by a local. Les Trois-Ilets is the tourist heart of the island. It is therefore lively all day and all night, with a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. This is why France Langue advises its students to stay there (at the tourism residence). In order to avoid any unwanted attention, we recommend avoiding showing off your belongings such as jewelries, phones and cameras.
