It was originally called Madinina, "the island of flowers", by its inhabitants, the Kalinas. On 15th of September 1635, the French Compagnie des Indes d'Amérique (West Indies Company) took possession of the island in the name of King Louis XIII of France. Martinique then became French. The primary objective of France was to cultivate sugar cane for consumers in mainland France at a lower cost. At that time, sugar was a luxury food, and was traditionally bought from Muslim countries at very high prices. This began the island’s development, which led to the arrival of slaves in the sugar cane plantations and gave rise to its famous by-product— rum. Location of Martinique At the heart of the French West Indies, the island of Martinique lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, between Dominica to the north and Saint Lucia to the south, approximately 450 km north-east of the coast of Venezuela and 700 km south-east of the Dominican Republic. Just 70 km in length and 30 km wide and surrounded by coconut trees and a turquoise sea, the island has many surprises in store for you. This paper aims to introduce Martinique and its public transport systems. Starting with an overview over Martinique, the present transport situation will be analysed with findings as follows: the most important suppliers of public transport services are buses in the capital area and taxi collectives on routes to/from the capital. Individual transport by (rental) car plays a major role, so road congestion is a major issue. Recent developments and innovations that may improve the present situation will be discussed as well. However, at the close of the nineteenth century, a series of disasters struck the French island of Martinique that threatened the republican fantasy of seamless assimilation: (1) the 1890 fire that destroyed the island’s capital of Fort-de-France; (2) the 1891 Atlantic hurricane that devastated the island’s economy and prompted a reevaluation of the place of the colony within the French nation; (3) the first general strike in 1900 wherein civil unrest in the colonies caused a political disaster in the metropole; and (4) the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée that killed over 30,000 people nearly instantaneously and cemented a postcolonial relationship characterized by dependence.

Owing to its history, cyclonic destructions and seismic damage, Martinique’s heritage, prior to the nineteenth century, is limited. PART OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY architecture is part of Europe. In this context and during that period survives in a confined way, a church here, a market (1927–1969), a good many of Martinique’s residents there, with an emblematic example: the Schœlcher chose to endorse architectural modernity. library (1889), built following architect Henri Picq’s plans. THE 1930s Apparently the first modern work in Martinique would have been for the Fort-de-France sailing club in 1927, an unbuilt project by architect Gérard Corbin1 of Guadeloupe (1905). The first modern building erected was l’Église du Prêcheur, probably built around 1930.

    (Le Lamentin ville fertile / Le lamentin, a fertile city) Le Lamentin, cœur de la Martinique, est un joyau. Cette commune doit son nom aux lamantins. Ces mammifères aquatiques, qui, jusqu’au 17ème siècle, peuplaient ses rivières. Par superstition, les Caraïbes ne mangeaient pas leur chair, mais proie facile pour les colons à la recherche de viande, ils disparurent vite de nos eaux. Située au centre de la Martinique, la ville du Lamentin, d’une superficie de 6232 hectares, avec ses 21 quartiers, est la plus vaste de la Martinique. Ville carrefour, ville d’accueil, abritant l’aéroport international Aimé CESAIRE, elle est la ville d’arrivée de 80% des touristes de séjour. Abritant plus de 42 000 habitants, elle est idéalement située au carrefour des routes menant vers le sud et le nord de l’île. Séparée de Fort-de-France par la rivière Jambette, Le Lamentin est limitrophe au nord, des communes de Saint-Joseph et du Gros-Morne, au Sud, de Ducos et du François, et à l’Est, du Robert. Son centre urbain est entouré de collines ou de mornes de faible altitude. Son sol est fertile et son climat plutôt humide. La commune est traversée par la Lé- zarde, le plus important cours d’eau de la Martinique, rejoint par le Longvilliers pour former le Canal du Lamentin à partir du pont du Calebassier. Le Lamentin possède une façade maritime, la Baie du Morne Cabri ou Cohé du Lamentin, où se trouvent un parcours santé, un centre nautique et la marina du Port Cohé.
