Začela se je tako, da so svetovne športne agencije poročale o tem, da na atletskih tablicah meseca maja svetovni vrh krojita dve naši vrhunski atletinji: • Tina Šutej, ki je v skoku s palico v ZDA dosegla 4,61m in zasedala vodilno mesto na svetovnih tablicah, • ne dolgo zatem se ji je z metom 65,89 m pridružila še Martina Ratej. Vrhunec je bila bronasta kolajna Primoža Kozmusa na svetovnem prvenstvu. A naslov evropske mladinske prvakinje Barbare Špiler, njegove klubske kolegice, in naslov svetovnega prvaka Roberta Rennerja med mlajšimi mladinci, predstavljajo vrhunce slovenske atletike. Skupaj z vrhunskimi nastopi Žana Rudolfa in njegovo srebrno kolajno, ob izvrstnih uspehih gorskih tekačev (Mitja Kosovelj, Lucija Krkoč, Lea Einfalt, Tina Kozjek, ...), imamo pred seboj izjemen potencial slovenske atletike. Za nami je verjetno najuspešnejša sezona v zgodovini slovenske atletike. Zato je bil prehod v leto 2012 po tej plati kar se da optimističen in obetaven, in tega mišljenja ne gre spremeniti, kljub neizkoriščeni priložnosti naših atletov na SP v dvorani v Istanbulu. V letu 2012 bomo skozi »Program AZS» zasledovali, podobno kot v letu 2011, naslednji dve temeljni izhodišči: • izvajanje programa v takem obsegu, kot so zagotovljena sredstva (fundacija, ministrstvo, sponzorji, drugo), • da bodo, skladno s strokovnimi izhodišči, programi atletov predvsem ciljno podprti.
