Phil Bates Plays Sa, 30. November 2013, ab 19.30h – Zentrum Missione Naters ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA performed by Phil Bates and The Berlin String Orchestra Classic Rock der absoluten Extraklasse – Rock meets Symphony - „The Music of ELO performed by Phil Bates & Band“. Auszug Songliste : Evil Woman / All Over The World / Turn To Stone / Calling America / Confusion / Sweet Talkin' Woman / Hold On Tight / Telephone Line / Roll Over Beethoven / Showdown / Midnight Blue / Don't Bring Me Down / Rock & Roll Is King / Rockaria / Livin' Thing / Last Train To London / Mister Blue Sky Das Electric Light Orchestra lieferte Dutzende Top-20-Hits, von denen viele zu Klassikern der Popgeschichte wurden. .

Common Place: Rereading ‘Nation’ in the Quoting Age, 1776-1860 Anitta C. Santiago Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Anitta C. Santiago All rights reserved ABSTRACT Common Place: Rereading ‘Nation’ in the Quoting Age, 1776-1860 Anitta C. Santiago This dissertation examines quotation specifically, and intertextuality more generally, in the development of American/literary culture from the birth of the republic through the Civil War. This period, already known for its preoccupation with national unification and the development of a self-reliant national literature, was also a period of quotation, reprinting and copying. Within the analogy of literature and nation characterizing the rhetoric of the period, I translate the transtextual figure of quotation as a protean form that sheds a critical light on the nationalist project. This project follows both how texts move (transnational migration) and how they settle into place (national naturalization). Combining a theoretical mapping of how texts move and transform intertextually and a book historical mapping of how texts move and transform materially, I trace nineteenth century examples of the culture of quotation and how its literary mutability both disrupts and participates in the period’s national and literary movements. In the first chapter, I engage scholarship on republican print culture and on republican emulation to interrogate the literary roots of American nationalism in its transatlantic context. Looking at commonplace books, autobiographies, morality tales, and histories, I examine how quotation as a practice of memory impression functions in national re-membering.

  • The ELO Story
The ELO Story Jeff Lynne was born in industrial Birmingham, England, on December 30, 1947. He grew up in the then- new Shard End City Council housing estate, a high-density residential development built on the eastern edge of the city right after the Second World War, with his parents Philip and Nancy.1 He had a brother and two sisters.2 Lynne’s grandparents in his father’s side were vaudevillian performers.3 More than thirty years later, Lynne would pay tribute to his birthplace in the ELO song “All Over the World,” which mentions Shard End alongside other cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rio de Janiero, and Tokyo. Lynne was a Brummie, a nickname for those blessed with the notoriously thick local Birmingham accent.4 Brummie is shorthand for Brummagem, the popular West Midlands way of pronouncing Birmingham.5 Brummie also has an unfortunate alternative dictionary definition: “counterfeit, cheap, and showy.”6 The accent, which not everyone in the city shares, has even been described as representing the least intelligent dialect in the British Isles.7 Lynne grew up listening to Del Shannon, Roy Orbison,8 Chuck Berry, and The Shadows records.9 His parents did not always approve. About Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” playing on the radio, Jeff said “[t]hey were complaining that it was too sexy, or something, but that voice just made the hairs go up on my neck.”10 At age thirteen, Lynne attended a concert by Del Shannon at Birmingham Town Hall, and from that point on dedicated his life to music.11 He noticed immediately that live performances

Kennedy Professor Margaret R. Somers Associate Professor Andrew Shryock Assistant Professor Genevieve Zubrzycki © Mucahit Bilici 2008 “tuba lil guraba” ii Acknowledgements In the writing of this dissertation and the many years of study that led up to it, I have accumulated a lot of debt to a great many people. I have been extremely lucky to have Fatma Muge Gocek as my advisor. Ever since I came to Ann Arbor, she has provided me with the support and guidance without which my experience of graduate school would have been far different. She has been an inspiration for me in intellectual courage and academic self-confidence. She did what all excellent mentors should do: while providing the necessary direction, she always let me be myself. Working with her has been a deep pleasure and she will be my role model for academic mentorship in the years ahead. I am also thankful to Michael Kennedy. Even when I seemed unsure of myself, Michael remained supportive and confident about my ability to produce original work. Special thanks go to Margaret Somers, from whom I learned the intricacies of social theory and the sociological importance of the concept of citizenship. I am indebted to Andrew Shryock in many ways. I have been fortunate to be part of the Building Islam in Detroit project initiated by him and Sally Howell.

Liverecension: Jeff Lynne's ELO - Ericsson Globe, Stockholm 2018-09-12 Page 1 of 3 Liverecension: Jeff Lynne’s ELO – Ericsson Globe, Stockholm 2018-09-12 1986, ”Calling America”, Trackslistan.
