This can cause many different impacts and actions on individuals who are viewing a variety of social media content or posts. One can become inspired by those they follow by engaging in similar practices to either better themselves or begin to compare themselves to others which can lead to more negative side effects such as developing low self-esteem, anxiety, and even depressive thoughts. Taking it to the mat: Simone Biles wins sixth US gymnastics title By Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff on 08.15.19 Word Count 778 Level 960L Image 1. Simone Biles celebrates after competing in the uneven bars to win the all around senior women's competition at the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships Sunday, August 11, 2019, in Kansas City, Missouri. Photo by: Charlie Riedel/AP Photo KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The choice was entirely hers. Yet gymnast Simone Biles knew what she had to do. Sure, she could have taken her triple-twisting double-flip (also called "the triple-double") out of her floor exercise routine the final night of the U.S. women's gymnastics championships on Sunday, August 11. She didn't need the triple-double to win another national title. Still, her coach, Laurent Landi, left the choice to Biles. After the Olympic champion's bid to become the first woman to complete the triple-double in competition came up a bit short on Friday night, he probably knew her choice. Landi has spent enough time in the gym around the 22-year-old to know Biles is reshaping what's possible in her sport. It quickly becomes evident that sidestepping a challenge isn't really Biles' thing. This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. The First Pass So she threw it in at the end of her first tumbling pass, fueled by ambition and unbelievable skill. When the dizzying combination ended with her feet firmly on the floor — if barely in bounds — a jolt shook through the packed arena.

Copyright and re-use policy See http://shura.shu.ac.uk/information.html Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive http://shura.shu.ac.uk What is the energy Simone needs for the move? To perform the ‘Biles’, Simone needs to travel and spin. Her take-off energy therefore needs to incorporate these two elements: [1] 퐸푘 푡푎푘푒-표푓푓 = 퐸푘 푙푛푒푎푟 + 퐸푘 푟표푡푎푡표푛푎푙 We can break this equation down a bit by considering that she moves up and forward: [2] 퐸푘 푡푎푘푒-표푓푓 = 퐸푘 푣푒푟푡푐푎푙 + 퐸푘 ℎ표푟푧표푛푡푎푙 + 퐸푘 푟표푡푎푡표푛푎푙 To simplify the problem, we assume that the gymnast is a point mass, i.e. the gymnast is just a point particle. If you wanted to do a more accurate job, you could model each segment of the gymnast separately and combine the values appropriately in a global reference frame (figure 1). Kinetic energy is dependent on the speed and the mass of a body: 1 [3] 퐸 = 푚푣2 푘 푙푛푒푎푟 2 Equation 3 is for linear energy and we will use that equation to calculate 퐸푘 푣푒푟푡푐푎푙 and 퐸푘 ℎ표푟푧표푛푡푎푙. In the ‘Biles’, there are two rotations about Simone’s somersaulting axis and a half rotation about her twisting axis.

Meenan: Sexual Assault of United States Olympic Athletes Sexual Assault of United States Olympic Athletes: Gymnastics, Taekwondo, and Swimming Chloe Meenan Abstract: The distribution of power in American Olympic sports has made room for the development of a culture of sexual assault. This culture has continued to grow and the organizations in authority have not done enough to put a stop to the abuse. First, I will address the troubles that victims have when sharing their stories, due to the distribution of power within the organizations, namely in gymnastics, taekwondo, and swimming. I focus on the Me Too Movement and the influence that social media has had in making strides towards raising awareness about sexual assault. I will explore the specifics of the abuse within each sport and the women who shared their stories to prevent similar things from happening to others.
