  • What Is Biblical Prophecy?
What is Biblical Prophecy? What Biblical Prophecy is NOT, and What It Really IS: Contrary to what many fundamentalist preachers or late-night radio hosts would have you believe, biblical prophecy is not primarily about “predicting the future” or finding clues in the Bible that correspond to people or events in our own day and age! The prophets of Ancient Israel did not look into some kind of crystal ball and see events happening thousands of years after their own lifetimes. The books they wrote do not contain hidden coded messages for people living in the 20th or 21st centuries! Rather, biblical prophets were mainly speaking to and writing for the people of their own time. They were challenging people of their own world, especially their political rulers, to remain faithful to God’s commandments and/or to repent and turn back to God if they had strayed. They were conveying messages from God, who had called or commissioned them, rather than speaking on their own initiative or authority. However, because the biblical prophets were transmitting messages on behalf of God (as Jews and Christians believe), much of what they wrote for their own time is clearly also relevant for people living in the modern world. The overall message of faith and repentance is timeless and applicable in all ages and cultures. To understand what biblical prophecy really is, let’s look more closely at the origins, definitions, and uses of some key biblical words. In the Hebrew Bible, the word for “prophet” is usually nabi’ (lit. “spokesperson”; used over 300 times!), while the related feminine noun nebi’ah (“prophetess”) occurs only rarely.

  • Resurrection Or Miraculous Cures? the Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against Its Ancient Near Eastern Background
Bar, “Resurrection or Miraculous Cures?” OTE 24/1 (2011): 9-18 9 Resurrection or Miraculous Cures? The Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against its Ancient Near Eastern Background SHAUL BAR (UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS) ABSTRACT The Elijah and Elisha cycles have similar stories where the prophet brings a dead child back to life. In addition, in the Elisha story, a corpse is thrown into the prophet’s grave; when it comes into con- tact with one of his bones, the man returns to life. Thus the question is do these stories allude to resurrection, or “only” miraculous cures? What was the purpose of the inclusion of these stories and what message did they convey? In this paper we will show that these are legends that were intended to lend greater credence to prophetic activity and to indicate the Lord’s power over death. A INTRODUCTION There is consensus among scholars that Dan 12:2-3, which they assign to the 1 second century B.C.E., refers to the resurrection of the dead. The question be- comes whether biblical texts earlier than this era allude to this doctrine. The phrase “resurrection of the dead” never appears in the Bible. Scholars searching for biblical allusions to resurrection have cited various idioms.2 They list verbs including “arise,”3 “wake up,”4 and “live,”5 all of which can denote a return to life. We also find “take,”6 which refers to being taken to Heaven, the noun “life,”7 and “see.”8 In the present paper however, we shall examine the stories of the Elijah and Elisha cycles which include similar tales in which the prophet brings a dead child back to life: in Elijah’s case, the son of the widow of Zare- phath (1 Kgs 17:17-24); in Elisha’s, the son of the Shunammite matron (2 Kgs 4:31-37).

  • III the ROLE of WOMEN in the OLD TESTAMENT OUTSIDE the PENTATEUCH Jerry A
III THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT OUTSIDE THE PENTATEUCH Jerry A. Gladson General Observations The task of this study will be to survey the role of women in the OT outside the Pentateuch. Since the Pentateuch reflects the legal more explicitly than the social aspects of this subject, a study of the historical, prophetic, hymnic, and wisdom literature will allow for a wider view of the social context of the role of Hebrew women. It was felt that since no essential shift in woman’s basic societal position occurs within the literature studied, the results would be best arranged topically. This, in turn, allows a more practical perspective from which to evaluate the findings. The sheer historical and literary immensity of the literature surveyed means that depth had to be relegated a secondary place to breadth (our primary purpose of this study). To compensate, this writer has sought to study contextually and sociologically virtually every occurrence of Œiššāh1 (“woman”) in the books from Joshua to Chronicles (Hebrew canon). Such a procedure gives a fair indication as to the OT place of woman in the community of God. In addition, study has been made of relevant texts which speak of women but do not employ Œiššāh, and consequently some overlap with Pentateuchal sources has been necessary for clarification. Patriarchal Structure The patriarchal form of family existence in the OT assumes that a woman “lived in the shadows rather than in the light of life.” She was first under the authority of her father, then her husband after marriage; and, in the eventuality of his death, her husband’s brother.

  • Revelatory Experiences Attributed to Biblical Women in Early Jewish Literature Randall D. Chesnutt
Revelatory Experiences Attributed to Biblical Women in Early Jewish Literature Randall D. Chesnutt For all their obvious differences, the midrashic works Jubilees, Joseph and Aseneth, and the Testament of Job 1 share a striking common feature: each greatly expands the role of a woman or wom en known from the Bible. Rebekah, already a bold and resourceful character in Genesis, is elevated even further in Jubilees, where she overshadows her rather docile husband and achieves a significant role in salvation history. Aseneth2 is mentioned only in passing in Gen 41 :45, 50, and 46:20 as the wife of the patriarch Joseph, but in the apocryphal romance it is she - not the patriarch - who is the leading character. Women play almost no role in the biblical book of Job: Job's wife appears only long enough to suggest that he curse God and die (2:9); and nothing is mentioned concerning his daugh ters other than their names, their exceptional beauty, and their roles as coheirs with their brothers (42:13-15). In the Testament of Job, however, the women in Job's family appear regularly, and Job's daughters receive especially complimentary treatment. Moreover, each work attributes to the women some sort of revelatory experi- . ence which enhances their role in promoting the central ideals of the book. To the extent that these portrayals represent post-biblical expansions, they provide important data for studying the varying perceptions of and roles assigned to Jewish women in the Hellenistic era. The purpose of this study is to examine how the revelatory ex periences attributed to these women function within the respective writings, how they relate to other Jewish traditions of roughly 1The overworked and imprecise word "midrashic" is used loosely with refer ence to these three works because they all adapt and retell biblical narratives in such a way as to address contemporary concerns.

  • The Minor Prophets
Survey Of The Minor Prophets “We also have the prophetic word made more sure, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:19–21) David A. Padfield © 1997 All Rights Reserved The Minor Prophets Introduction I. “When, in an apprehensive or deploring mood, we seniors are tempted to dispense to our successors cautionary admonishment and dire prediction, we should first reflect on the moral history of mankind, which can be summarized: They hang prophets. Or ignore them, which hurts worse.” (Karl Menninger, M.D., Whatever Became of Sin?, pg. 1). II. Prophetic books cover over one-quarter of the Bible, yet no section of the Bible is more neglected. There are several possible reasons: A. Since we are no longer under the Law of Moses, some assume we no longer need to study the Old Testament (Rom. 15:4). B. Some claim that since we do not have to know about the prophets to get to heaven, we can neglect them (minimal Christians). C. It takes too long to get through the Prophets. D. Lack of respect for the inspiration of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:19–21). III. The prophets were guided by the Holy Spirit to teach the word of God.

THE DEATH OF JOSIAH IN SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION: WRESTLING WITH THE PROBLEM OF EVIL? by STEVE DELAMARTER Portland, USA Introduction Not long ago, Z. Talshir discussed in this journal three accounts of the Death of Josiah found respectively in 2Kgs, 2Chr and in lEsdr.1 From these three texts alone one can establish the fact that Josiah's death and the circumstances surrounding it generated intense interest on the part of storytellers long after the event itself took place. Tradents were drawn, apparendy, to what we would call the theological prob lem of evil that stands at the core of the story: how could such a noble king experience such an ignoble death? As Talshir shows, these texts give three different answers to the question: how could Josiah, the most righteous of Judah's kings, die an ignominious death at the hands of a pagan king? As it turns out, several other tradents and storytellers had some thing to say about the circumstances and causes of Josiah's death.
