    The State of Social Enterprise in Central Ohio Sixth Annual Report August 24, 2020 A New Way For Business A New Way for Business 103 Social Mission-focused Small Enterprises Business Is Resilient and Responsive Social enterprises are special, mission-driven businesses committed to eliminating the social and economic divide that the COVID pandemic and Black Lives Matter have brought into sharper focus in 2020. For them, social impact is a non-negotiable part of their business that does not ebb when society’s attention wanes. In early 2020 we launched a series of short videos of stories to make their specialness real: www.socialventurescbus.com/ easytounderstand. In 2018 we celebrated that social enterprises had become the dominant job creator in Central Ohio for individuals disadvantaged by past incarceration, human trafficking, drug addiction, chronic homelessness, or developmental disabilities. Gearing Up In 2019 we celebrated eleven local social enterprises that made social enterprise #EasyToUnderstand. Together they provide 1,099 jobs, generate $59.7 million in earned revenue, pay $33.5 million in payroll, and over the prior three years have expanded employment by 49 percent.     Message from Mayor Andrew J. Ginther As we begin 2016, I am excited about the future of our city and all the new programs and facilities the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department will be featuring. Currently, their 230+ parks, 29 recreation centers, 7 outdoor pools, athletic complexes, golf courses and a trail system that provide opportunities for all of our residents to lead a healthy life. In the coming months, the department will offer even more possibilities for Central Ohioans to improve their quality of life while making a positive economic impact on the city. This spring, the department is anticipating the reopening of Douglas, Glenwood and Driving Park Recreation Centers that were closed for renovations. In the summer, Driving Park will unveil a new 8,500 square foot swimming pool and will continue to add to the Central Ohio Greenways Columbus City Council trail for Columbus biking enthusiasts. Later in the year, the department Zachary M. Klein, President anticipates their new Greg S. Lashutka Event Center to open giving Elizabeth C. The 22-acre water park is open during the summer months and is located on Columbus Zoo property. Zoombezi Bay is owned and operated by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Proceeds generated by Zoombezi Bay supplement the tax dollars that make the Zoo – a non-profit organization – possible. No tax dollars go toward Zoombezi Bay operations. ATTENDANCE Zoombezi Bay has averaged 391,000 guests per year over its 11 years of operations. The highest attendance number that Zoombezi Bay ever achieved was in 2018 with 438,000 guests. The busiest month in Zoombezi Bay’s history was in 2016 when the waterpark welcomed 161,534 visitors in the month of June.     One of the things we were really excited to share with our guests last year was the much-anticipated opening of Polar Frontier. This innovative and cutting-edge new area allowed the Zoo to bring polar bears back to Central Ohio for the first time since 1994. We were able to create a more expanded and enriching habitat space for our brown bears, Brutus and Buckeye, while giving us the opportunity to connect our guests to the fragile and beautiful Arctic Circle. Not to mention, it’s just cool to be able to create a space in Ohio where our guests can have the completely unique and thrilling experience of watching polar bears swim overhead. Of course, I can’t mention Polar Frontier without extending a deep and heartfelt thank you for the generosity of Franklin County residents and voters who support the Zoo with a tax levy. In fact, it’s due to the dedication and support of our community— members, donors, businesses, partners—that we were able to create one of the best polar bear homes in any zoo in the country. When I look at Polar Frontier—and at the plans for the Zoo’s future—I’m always overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters who make it all possible. It’s the generosity of our community toward the Zoo that inspires us to give back to Central Ohio, too. We’re deeply committed to our community and strive to be a good community partner and leader. To pay forward the generosity we receive, we provide and participate in many partnerships and programs that help to strengthen the community.
