Durdle Cove is a special gem exposing the Lewes and Seaford Chalk stratigraphy where these and new marker beds are identified and where sediments and tectonic structures provide clues to timing of movements that produced a Late Cretaceous pericline which grew into a Miocene monocline along the line of the underlying Purbeck Reverse Fault.

  • The Purbeck Way the Purbeck Way
The Purbeck Way The Purbeck Way The Purbeck Way passes through some of the most varied and spectacular scenery in Britain. After leaving the River Frome and its water meadows, the route continues Wareham to Chapman’s Pool or Ballard Down through heathland, woodland and grassland before arriving at the dramatic scenery of England’s first natural World Heritage Site, the ‘Jurassic Coast’. The route then continues along the South West Coast Path from Ballard Down to Chapman’s Pool. North of Wareham there are links with the Wareham Forest Way and beyond to Blandford and Christchurch via the Stour Valley Way. Geology and Wildlife The geology of the area is outstanding. The route from Wareham to Chapmans' Pool includes eight major rock types, each shaping the landscape in a different way, with a variety of habitats and wildlife. As the seasons change, so does the wildlife: from spring flowers and summer Wareham butterflies to autumn migrating birds and wildfowl staying for the winter. Old Harry Rocks Species Purbeck is home to many nationally rare species. Some, like the ladybird spider, are only found in Dorset. Fortunately much of the area is managed by sympathetic landowners or conservation bodies like the National Trust, so their future is in safe hands. Chapman’s Pool Following The Purbeck Way Although much of the route is fairly easy walking, some sections are remote and quite rugged, especially in winter. Plan your route carefully and wear suitable clothing and Adonis blue butterfly footwear. The route is signposted with various signs and markers, some showing the distinctive logo above.

  • This Walk to Old Harry Rocks Is an Easy Circular Ramble
This walk description is from happyhiker.co.uk Starting point and OS Grid reference Rough lay-by on the B3351 (SZ 017819) Ordnance Survey map OL 15 Purbeck and South Dorset Distance 5.7 miles Date of Walk 2 July 2019 Traffic light rating Introduction: This walk to Old Harry Rocks is an easy circular ramble. It takes you along the flat, grassy ridge of Ballard Down, which, as the name suggests, is a chalk downland and part of the Purbeck Hills, to Old Harry Rocks. The views along this ridge are truly spectacular stretching over Poole Harbour on the north side and over Swanage on the south. There are a number of barrows, funerary monuments dating from the Late Neolithic/Late Bronze Age periods, on Ballard Down. They are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The far point of the walk is Old Harry Rocks, or perhaps it should now be singular! At one time there was Old Harry and Old Harry's wife. However a storm in 1896 put paid to the wife so only Old Harry, a chalk sea stack remains. However there are various other interesting rock formations, which make this a spectacular section of coast. There are steep drops so beware the edges. The village of Studland occurs at about the half way point where there is a good pub, The Bankes Arms to take on sustenance. Alternatively, there are ample grassy spots above the cliffs for a picnic. Shortly after the start of the walk, you climb up the flanks of Ballard Down. This is quite a long steady pull worthy of the Amber marking but it is straightforward.
