The study area covers about 850 km2 between the townships of Bulls and Sanson in the east, Tangimoana in the south and Santoft in the north. A piezometric map, developed from measured depths to groundwater in about 100 wells in October 2014, suggests that groundwater flow, in particular the shallow groundwater (<30 m), is heavily influenced by the regional topography. Shallow groundwater flows mostly from elevated areas, such as Marton, in a south-westerly direction towards the Rangitikei River, whereas deeper groundwater (>30 m) showed relatively less topographic influence. Groundwater discharges to the river upstream and downstream of Bulls, while groundwater recharge or no interaction with the river is more likely to occur near the coast.

  • Rare Plant Conservation at the Tangimoana Dunelands
Rare plant conservation at the Tangimoana dunelands Nicholas Singers 84 Chelwood Street Palmerston North Published by Department of Conservation Head Office, PO Box 10-420 Wellington, New Zealand This report was commissioned by Wanganui Conservancy ISSN 1171-9834 © 1998 Department of Conservation, P.O. Box 10-420, Wellington, New Zealand Reference to material in this report should be cited thus: Singers, N., 1998. Rare plant conservation at the Tangimoana dunelands. Conservation Advisory Science Notes No. 199, Department of Conservation, Wellington. Keywords: Rare plant management, dune slacks, Eleocharis neozelandica, Pimelea sp., habitat reconstruction, Foxton Ecological District Abstract The Tangimoana dune system of foredunes, parabolic dunes, dune slacks, and gravel plains were identified as a recommended area for protection in the Foxton Ecological District Protected Natural Areas survey. The main focus of the present study was of the vegetation/water relation- ships in the dune slacks, with special reference to the rare spiked sand sedge, Eleocharis neozelandica. In addition, cuttings of the endangered native daphne, Pimelea "Turakina", from Himatangi were planted at the Tangimoana dunelands. Excavating wetlands in deflation hollows for the creation of habitat for E. neozelandica appears after one year's observation to be a successful way to manage this species. The plant is very robust in that it can withstand ex- tremes, and has survived well being transplanted from a glasshouse to the field situation. However, rabbit browsing appears to be a threat in late sum- mer and may reduce reproductive output of E. neozelandica. The Pimelea "Turakina" planted at Tangimoana dunelands have established well and seedlings are present.
